Unhappy Online Ratings Issues

By now, we've probably all noticed that the online rating system for ToCA3 is a complete and total mess.

First and most importantly, if any racer retires during an online race, no one remaining in the race will have a ratings adjustment when the race is over. This appears to be a consistent problem.

I've also noticed some other squirrelly, intermittent ratings related issues. During a 1980's Williams F1 series, I won three races on the trot and lost 30 points. Pardon?

Also, sometime last week, I spectated on a race that was ongoing when I entered a room and saw my rating increase by 7 points when the race ended. Say what?

So ultimately, my question is this: Is this a Codemasters/PS2 game code issue (which means the problem is permanent and unfixable) or is the problem related to Gamespy (which could then, theoretically be fixed)?

RFT? Codemasters? Anyone?

Thanks for the heads up on the rating issues.

Another problem to add to this list: I was observing a race that placed one driver ahead of a car that had just passed him. In other words, the game had A-B instead of B-A. Everyone shook their heads over that one, too.

I hear what you're saying there smegal but I just can't help valuing them. I wouldn't say that I "worry" about them exactly but they were always a nice indicator in TRD2 of someone's relative experience/ability. This would then give you an idea of what you are up against in the next race, who to look out for, who's going to be quick, etc. I'm not points/ratings hungry and would rather finish last in a tightly contested race than be first by a mile in a room below my ability (though there is a certain sense of satisfaction in spanking a room full of people! hehe.). Nonetheless, the rating system in TRD2 worked and provided an interesting dynamic to the game. Granted, some people who were ratings hungry could and would do some stupid sh*t if they were being beaten (especially by people with lower ratings) but on the whole, I like the rating system concept, provided it works.

Default TRD3 Ratings

I'm with ya on that one Clash. Although I don't spend my time worrying about how my rating looks etc. It is always nice to feel you are improving and a working ratings system can do the trick!

Lets just hope the ratings in TRD3 settle down along with the gamespy servers!

If anything, I think the rating system is worse than ever. In the last few days my overall score has gone from 1521 to 1519 when I've won more than the majority of races. Today I got it back up to 1520 but then created my own game to win all 4 races yet lose points on each one!

I know it's not the most important part of the game but it's enough to put me off playing to be honest. What's the point in playing if you're just getting ripped off? I swear today one of the guys realised he was getting points for losing so he didn't bother to compete.

I think the only aspect that keeps people playing online games is progression.

I'm losing faith in Codemasters.

I find the rating on each championship seems to be a bit weird at first, when you are on 1500. But once you have played that champ a few times it seems to settle down and work correctly. It's definatly not quite right though.

It would be a shame if it doesn't settle down as to have an individual champ rating aswell as an overall rating makes a lot of sense!

I think you will find two camps... the league racers and non-league racers. League racers could care less what their ratings are - they measure their skills versus their peers (and generally league racers are very very good). Non-league racers need that ranking system to compare themselves versus others.

It's a shame it doesn't work well - but to be honest, I couldn't tell you what my ranking is and could care less. All I care is how I stand in our current series, etc.

Don't lose faith in Codemasters - they've put out a very good product that has a couple flaws in it. Find another online racing game for the PS2 that's even close. They've done a remarkable job considering the level of hardware they have to use.

I know GT4 is coming on-line soon - and it has many more problems. Guess what they use as their benchmark? Toca3...

Default Could be...

Maybe Codemasters are performing psychology tests on us. We are just the mice in their experiment; sometimes you get the cheese, sometimes you don’t. Just enjoy the twists and turns, join a league and get a wheel.
