  • PVP Expanded in Mod 9

    PVP is getting a makeover for Mod 9, this week details were released of the changes to PVP and how this will effect players.

    The announcement has had a very mixed reaction from the players both here and in the US – with players expressing support and dismay at this additional feature to Mod 9.

    Here is Tolero’s official statement released earlier this week;

    Quote:
    Originally Posted by Tolero

    Rather than convincing your foe to run all the way to a PvP tavern to duke it out, you can now just select the player directly, and on your inspect orb, click the "challenge" symbol. This will allow you and your enemy to be transported to a PvP arena of your choice from anywhere in the game!

    To begin your duel, you must specify the terms of your battle. Select from:
    • Game type (death match, capture the flag)
    • The Arena (select an arena or chose random)
    • Time limit (a range of minutes up to a full hour, or random)

    Similar to a trade window, both parties must agree for the match to begin, and you can see the status of whether or not the other person has accepted yet or not. Your opponent is presented your terms, and given the chance to negotiate any changes they'd want to make to the duel. A text field is also available for you to privately chat/negotiate in the Challenge window with your opponent prior to the start of the match. Once you and your opponent agree to the terms, you will be transported automatically into the arena after a 5 second count down.

    Remember that in Mod 9, general chat spans across any instance, so if you were standing in the Marketplace when you entered the arena, your general chat will still be seen in the Market. If you have something to say to your PvP opponents that you don't want everyone to hear, you're best to use /say or /tell.

    You don’t have to just duel though, you can challenge in groups as well! You can fight in combinations of 1 vs 6, 3 vs 3, or any other group configuration you want. Gather your forces together into a group, and your opponents must do likewise. So if your group of 3 would like to fight those two guys in a group by the mailbox, set up your challenge and it will present it to them! You can see the status of who all of the two teams has accepted the challenge, and who's acceptance is still pending. Remember that you need to be in separate parties to use the challenge system. If you need to communicate between the two rival teams prior to the match, you can use the text field in the challenge window before everyone is transported into the match.

    If you'd like to have a match up with other random players, Jackson Laws is still available in the PvP taverns, and the open-brawl Tavern pits are still available at the Phoenix, Hammersmith, Wayward Lobster, and Open Palm.

    In addition to the normal death-match arena, a new Shavarath themed death-match arena has been added! Filled with traps and things to avoid bumping into, it can really add a whole new level of difficulty for your duel as you try not to be done in by your enemy AND your environment!

    If you're not in the mood to accept Challenges, you can turn on/off challenge acceptances in your options panel at any time! Otherwise, you can leave it on and see who picks a fight as you're making your way around the various public spaces!

    So the next time you're milling around the Harbor or Meridia, and you have a hankering for some PvP, challenge a friend or a stranger to PvP on the spot using the Challenge system!

    What are your thoughts on this subject?

  • More Mod UI Improvements – Side by side Comparing

    In addition this week Turbine has announced additional information regarding upcoming improvements to the UI with Side by side Comparing for items.

    Here is what Turbine Community Team member Tarrant had to say;

    In Mod 9, whenever you mouse over a wearable item to inspect it, any item you're currently wearing that uses the same inventory slot will be shown along side it so you can more easily compare and contrast the items.

    Example: You loot a new helm. You can mouse over the helm in your inventory, and not only will the item details window appear, but the detail window for the helm you're currently wearing will also appear beside it!

    This was then expanded upon by Turbine Quality Assurance member Thoon in this statement;

  • Turbine tackle US Lag Problems

    For some time now our friends across the sea have struggled with adverse ‘Lag’ conditions. In an attempt to overcome this Turbine are moving to a completely new Database!

    Here is what Sig Turbine US Director of Online Operations had to say;

    Quote:

Our commitment to quality requires us to relentlessly evaluate our strategies for their effectiveness. Unfortunately, the move did not result in the level of service that we expected. That means we have to make a change in order to achieve our goal of maintaining the best game environment in the world.

    On Monday we are relocating to a new datacenter that will provide the level of service and redundancy that we and you expect. This physical relocation is a huge undertaking that will unavoidably result in a significant downtime for DDO and AC players, as well as for the users of some of our websites. We apologize for the downtime, and are confident that this relocation will provide the performance and reliability that has been a standard of Turbine during our nearly 10 year history of operating quality games.

    We appreciate your patience and understanding during this move, and are looking forward to delivering a much improved experience for all players.

  • Mod 9 Release Shedule Update

    This information was released by US Community team member Tarrant. The US XP bonus ended on March 16th. ‘Not immediately after’ we believe will run until the end of April for the following reason;

    In the run up to the release of Mod 9 the ‘Artwork of Shavarath’ is being released on a week by week basis.

    Week one showed us an overview of the Plane of Battle, last week the released artwork showed us a more in depth view of the central City of ‘Amrath’ and this week the ‘Tower of Despair’ has been revealed for the Devil faction.

    If Turbine follow the time scale they are currently using for release of artwork that will leave 2 more factions to be revealed at the rate of one per week – that of the Demons and Archeron’s. The closing statement at the end of this week’s released artwork confirms this;

    Quote:

    Therefore this will take us up to around the 14th April, if you add a few more weeks of general hype this would put us on course for a US release date of around May 1st 2009.

    However for Mod 9 to reach the EU after US release (based on previous Mod’s) I would currently estimate Mod 9’s release for the EU to be approx Mid – end May 2009 depending on translation issues.

    And there is still time if you want to have a guess at the actual release date. Enter your estimate here and get the chance to win a Bone!

Your weekly Stromreach Beauty!

This weeks Page 3 Model is the one and only Melanastere

This powerful mage has a passion for spells, modeling and Pink Beholders!

Remember if you fancy having your picture taken by a smelly dwarf then send me a PM!

Your weekly interview with a member of the Community!

While I was taking the lovely Melanasteres picture she kindly agreed to an interview, here is what Mel had to say;

How did you first hear about DDO on line?

I stopped playing Advanced Dungeons & Dragons when I endorsed new heavy responsibilities... family and job! So I turned myself towards computer game which I could do anytime I want, even when I had only 10 minutes free before cooking! When I saw in the news that my beloved D&D was developed as a computer game I signed right away!

What got you interested in MMO’s?

I had never ever done any MMO before DDO and FPS games were my sole online experience. Actually I got scared about MMO. It appeared huge to me, I thought I would be lost. Also It's been said that MMOs are time sink and I could not afford it. But it was Dungeons & Dragons and I *had* to see it!

What is your most memorable encounter / experience from DDO?

I'm afraid I will not be very original but VON6 wins the palm. It was the best atmosphere I could experiment in this game. Hands shaking, heart accelerating, breathtaking! Velah was the strongest, the biggest. Dazed and confused down there, recovering from my first wing buffet I was really wondering why the hell we had chosen Dragon Slayers as a name for our guild!

What is your favourite class to play and why?

In case you would not know it's wizard! I wanted a pure white mage, it's something you can't tell why, it just runs in your blood. In DDO I like this class because I like something under control. Who is where, who is doing what,who needs what in real time. I like when I succeed to be a light breeze in a quest, the oil in the machine that makes things go smooth and easy but nobody realise it.

What is your most favorite dungeon?

Meh... now that is a question I can't answer. There are so many and it so much depend on the period. OK let's try to put something ahead: for a long time VON3 was my best team experience, original Abbot my best combat experience and Dream of Insanity my best solo experience.

What is your least favorite dungeon?

The Titan encounter. Finding a good strategy to complete this quest was an achievement for sure but even with a good imagination it's hard for me to go for a quest where the best thing you can find to challenge a Titan is making a column falling upon it... where you have to kill the boss with a laser beam... where the big guy follows a group running above on the ceiling like a cat would do with a spider he can't reach! Fortunately this is the only quest like that in the entire game.

What is your favorite DDO Monster?

Look at my avatar and you have a hint! Beholders have always been a special encounter. It's a very nice design and graphics, awesome sound and has been used here and there at strategic places in many quests at many different levels. It's the kind of monster you can't just attack and that's it. Something nasty can always happen. And it's so much fun to charm or feeblemind and play with them.

What would you most like to see added/improved to DDO?

An AI improved even further. It makes my day everytime a monster does something that looks smart

What is your least favorite thing about DDO?

Everything is burned a week after the release of a module and the grind is leaving. I'd love to see content that last several months, like it used to be in the past.

And last but not least: the robes! I need a decent white robe for my white mage!!

Lastly what advice would you give to a newcomer to Stormreach?

I'd say take your time, don't burn the content. Always be critical towards guides and especially mines. Experiment by yourself and find new ways. We need your new blood and your fresh ideas to keep the world rich and attractive

Now it seems this deviant is a member of the oft maligned "Rusty Nail Adventurers". Now I know many of you will recoil at such a revelation but stay with me here kind readers.

Now it came to my attention that this Belo character would be at an event that was taking place in Stormreach, unfortunately the only way to get to it was to score an invitation to it. Luckily I know a chap called "Perez Hiltonus" who managed to get me an invite to this "A" list event. What I did not know was I would have to face a mob of paparazzi demons to find my prey.

Now as you all know Ent does not shirk away from a fight, so I was thrown in among a bunch of strangers to face certain doom. However even after noticing a sly looking fellow talking to the organizers and vanishing quickly into the shadows I knew I was on the right track.

Transported into an Arena I was faced with evil incarnate and no I don’t mean "Brintanus Spearus" it was worse. Valiantly my team fought off the Demons and emerged victorious to the screaming hordes of fans who had heard I would be there.

Then it happened as I moved among the adulating throng I heard the whisper “Blame Belo. Blame Belo. "

I tried to speak to the organizers of this event but of course they had vanished into the night. Finally I spied a member of the "Knights of Shadow" whose anonymity I have promised who was willing to speak to me.

"You have opened up a gate of hell" he said
"Beware the Belo"

So here I am readers on the trail of this imp in human form..I will find this belo and I will unmask his evil ways.

Now onto other things, I am angry I really am. I was wandering along the market place the other day minding my own business when this irritating little hafling decided to annoy me.
Where is House P it blabbed...Where is three barrel cove, where can I train..

Now I appreciate that due to the opening of doors for all and sundery might bring a population boom to our fair city please don’t treat the elders like your own personal tour guide.

Anyway that’s it for me this week; I am once again on the trail of this Belo sinner

THIS RANGER IS OUTTA HERE

Harbourmaster Zin asks you to investigate the waterworks.
do you?

A) Gather your party of weary, battleworn yet loyal Drow sisters Faeanna the Graceful, Zilvdra Huntress delve into the sewers to
unravel the mysteries that lie beneath?

B) Create an LFM to get some help. Take 10 minutes to show someone how to get from Korthos to harbour. Have one person leave whilst you wait for the group to gather outside. Have an impatient guy running off and complete over half of the quest before all are in.
Thank your deity you don't have to do that again...

C) Eat a +2 INT tome and solo all 4 parts in 15 mins
with your Maelstrom wielding "toon".

2.
Your Bio contains?

A) A detailed and exotic backstory for your character and how you got to stormreach from a far away land such as the jungles of Xen'drik or island of Aerenal. Your character perhaps has a strong sense of purpose that may involve vengeance (or being an outcast).

B) A few funny quotes from friends and perhaps a small description of your character.

C) A definitive list of stuff that happend to die by you getting last hit. Perhaps the phat lewtz you are looking for.

C) A tab page of vorpals that you keep to charge Shroud high energy cells.

but heres some tips."

B) I think you could try this in your build it might work better.

C) 3 bits of advice for you "TWF TWF TWF"

6.
In the shroud you are mostly?

A) Lost and/or a soulstone - assuming you have managed to get into a shroud group in the first place.

B) Forgetting to bring your shards to craft. Alt-tabbing for crafting calculaters to see what you can make with 2 small horns and 5 large bones.

C) Killing stuff so fast that Arraetrikos doesn't even go for a bio break in part 4.

ANSWERS....

If you answered

Mostly A's

Powergaming is not your forte. Instead you may want to consider
other less demanding hobbies such as knitting, needlework and ironing.
However you probably could make a good roleplayer.
You may want to try "roleplaying" a powergamer. Learn some txt speak. The real powergamers won't notice.

Mostly B's Casual player.

You have the potential to be a powergamer so don't give up!
Real Life probably gets in the way so try to get your priorites right.
To be a powergamer you may want to cancel some of those less
important things such as taking your kids to hospital etc.

Mostly C's POWERGAMER!

You can rush with the best on your server. No-one can teach you
anything that you don't already know. In many cases you are a know-it all and extremely annoying to everyone else. However all that powergaming and grind can leave you stale and disillusioned with your souless "toon". Try roleplaying.

    With the release of mod8, we have a new puzzle type. I'm speaking about the puzzle in Enter the Kobold where we have to light the tiles placed on each square of a given board. In this puzzle, we can only make moves which simultaneously shift one square along one axis and two along the other. It’s a chess knight like movement. Of course it's fun to let everybody messing in it all at the same time and the puzzle is easy enough to not even care about an effective way to do it. That being said, I was always wondering if I could find a sequence of moves, such that each square of the board is visited exactly once. This is the well known problem of the Knight Tour except that there are no solution for a 4 x 4 board.

    Now it's not exactly a 4 x 4 board since there are 4 more squares added to this particular board. The two squares at entrance and the two squares at exit. This makes the Knight Tour study a bit special in this case since it's not a regular matrix like board.

    All that to say that I think that I've come across to find a solution to this problem. The path is given below. The entrance of the puzzle is at the bottom and the exit at the top. The S letter represents where I start. I can reach this starting square by stepping on to the glowing gem represented by the tiny black bold arrow at entrance. Then I follow the path showed by the light long arrows till E at exit.

    I’ve not tested this particular path yet but it should work!

    Have fun,
    ^mel

You've made me late for work Bran; reading all that

Great stuff as always. Nice to hear from Mel, tucked away on Dev.

The answers to the powergame survey were too funny
