Default Hunter Advice Wanted

I initially rolled a champion but the melee combat was so boring I rolled a hunter instead. The problem now is that when I shoot an enemy they often rush over and kill me, even if they were already fighting someone else.

I've died several times recently fighting the dour dwarves in the lowlands.

If I can attack a single target from range using my bow, trap and then melee to finish them off I'm fine.

If I get rushed by one or multiple enemies I'm dead, I can't outrun them (they just run behind me slashing away), they seem to slide over the terrain so I can't avoid them jumping over walls etc, there's no tumble or blocking abilities I can use, I simple stand there fighting away - a glance at the health bar reveals my fate halfway through a fight, if I'm going to lose I know it and THERES NOTHING I CAN DO ABOUT IT.

Am I missing something here? Are there any skills or abilities to get out of melee or avoid attacks?

All advice gratefully received!

Here's a fact: Hunters -due to the lack of proper multi-arrow or aoe attacks- cannot deal with multiple groups, even if they are lower level than the hunter. I know cause I played a hunter too. But there are a few tricks that may help you fight two (or max. three) enemies, but there is nothing I can do about running away, you have to figure it out yourself I'm afraid.

First, lay down a trap. Second, pull an enemy (I'm sure the tactics were shocking till this point.) but be careful about who is trapped. Try to hit the further one, so that while the closer one gets trapped, you can kill the further one with ease. After the first one is dead and probably the second starts hitting you, you should have got three quarters of morale left. Use it well (young padawan), and try hitting your enemy with multiple quick shots (and occasional barbed.s), then when your focus is filled, hit him with a spec. attack. It should've die. If not, try hitting him some more with quick shots.

Welcome to the world of the nuker.

You pull the aggro from other players because you deal far more damage than they deal to it, and the only real class that can keep aggro firmly set on themselves is the Guardian (the tank class).

Use the above advice, and just be careful in future. This stuff happens, can't avoid it every time.

There is a way to get a away!

If I'm right there is a cripple slash in the hunterskills that can cripple up to 2 enemy's. You can even use it moving..

If there are to much enemy's you use that skill and run away.. the enemy's or some of them are crippled and can't run that fast. That is the way I get Away..

And if you are in a crowded camp.. try to get away and then use the Fleeing skill.. the one u need rations for.. (Can't remember the name.. )

Thanks for all the advice guys, I think I'm starting to get the hang of it. That cripple strike sounds really good so I'll try and get that soon.

As the quickshot can slow enemies down to 60 % speed, you should easily be able to run away, so just get in a quickshot and get away.

Also the hunter isn't that bad at melee so you even can beat out the **** of monsters the same level as you.

Maybe it's changing in higher levels but as far to level 20 im really enjoying my hunter.

With a little practice you should be able to take 3 mobs at your level -2 at a time. 2 at your level and 1 even 4 levels higher (hard but doable).

You have to play smart with a hunter, no berserker rages nor charges will keep you alive.

Every time you want to engage something look around carefully, more mobs might spawn while you are fighting, so sometimes you have to wait a couple of secs to evaluate the situation.

The trick with more than one opponents is to lay your trap for one, slow the other and kill him before the 3rd one comes, switch to the one that has arrived and after you finish him off take care of the ensnared one. Of course this means that you are alone and haven't tried to help someone else, because then we have to take aggro into consideration, and usually you won't have enough time to focus and lay a trap.

Low cut is priceless when you try to run away. It slows all the opponents currently fighting you. Try to practice with low level mobs and you will do fine.

The Lotro Hunter is different than the WoW hunter. He plays more like the WoW mage in fact. The lack of a tanking pet means that you must use stalling tactics, just like the WoW mage uses frost bolt and frost nova. I don't know if you are familiar with what I'm writing, so I'll keep it simple.

At level 20 you even get dual wield which means you are not helpless in melee either. I have bigger melee eff. at level 23 than ranged eff. which might seem odd, but it is because of that.

Hope all this helps you.

Just to let u know, in higher lvls the only reason u wear melee weapons is to get additional crit or agility and stuff. It really sucks at killing monsters and the skills only use tons of power which is more usefull to be used with ranged attacks even if the mob is already close.

Trapping, fearing(animals/creatures) is essential if u wanna kill 3+ mobs of same lvl or higher.

Best way is... get u a minstrel who does the quests or the grinds with u

what i have found that works for me when going against 1-3 mobs same or lower lvl is....

max range....lay trap....focus charge skill (cant remember name atm)..then RoA...quick shot the closest....penetrating shot..swiftbow

by this point one shud be trapped and the one ur focusing on shud be low on health(or dead)..some melee or barbed arrow shud take this one out np...then just concentrate on the 3rd (which isnt trapped) untill its low on morale then do another RoA...hopefully this shud have finished the 3rd off leaving the trapped one with around 1/2-3/4 morale and you shouldnt have taken much dmg

Hmm, nice tactic, only a RoA would break the trap mate. So three mobs would be hitting you at the same time, even if doesn't, you can't do much damage with two people hitting you, it's far too interruptable.
