Why shouldn't there be a form of vorpal arrow with a DC based on the skills of the toon?

If you are going to say it isn't a good idea, then say why please.
And the ranged analogue of vorpal is slaying arrows. The only thing is we don't have 100% returning slaying arrows. What you suggested would be the same as having a str check for instant kill every time you attack.

the only difference is, that vorpal works on every mob while slayer arrows only on a specific type

vorpals can be bought, slayer arrows not

as it stands ranged has no real way to deal with trashmobs while melees can just happily vorpal away

While deviating from the original posters topic, some kind of vorpal arrow enhancement for the sniper PrC is logical in my opion as well, that is what snipers are generally about? Vistella has a point about the availability of vorpal weapons compared to (enough!) slaying arrows for the exact type of creature you are facing. They could make it a separate skill with an independant cooldown, make the DC dependant on a secondary attribute like WIS, give that special sniper shot a action bar like disabling traps or operating levers, limit the ability to the chosen favored enemies etc etc.

But back to topic, a reduced cooldown for manyshot or extended duration with same cooldown would bring back a little bit of fun to using ranged combat, at high levels it is of very little use at the moment due to the huge amount of hitpoints mobs have, and manyshot in it´s current form doesn´t change anything about that.

Vorpals are a one-time purchase/chest find however and use the D20+confirm roll; slayers and greater slaying use to-hit and fortitude save (and just a higher DC for the greater version - DC20 vs DC23)

Quite different systems and I consider the arrows a finite resource (and not a good one for mobs with high fortitude)

Slaying arrows are too powerful to be bought or even have 25% returning on them. You only have to use manyshot with smiting, banishing, disruption bows to know that.

Indeed, while a broad head arrow may do the job of chopping through a significant part of an adversaries neck and would most certainly sever the spine, that would effectively be a vorpal effect.

What I am talking about is a PrC where the Deepwood Sniper has a chance to assassinate based on dexterity and wisdom. This is no different to the rogue PrC imo. Afterall, a snipers job is to one hit kill by disabling a critical part of the body. The way the PrC works atm is like strapping an arrow with an explosive tip because all it is about atm is extra damage.

This is in no way the same as having a strength check on a standard weapon.

considering the saves of the current mobs, they only fail on a 1 anyway, so its the same chance as a vorpal....just you can run out of arrows but your vorpal is neverending (if you dont slap rusties with it that is)

nonsense! i have two everbright vorps, both cost about 50K gp off the AH, it does make me titter so when i vorp a rustie

i'd love to see some boost to many shot, 2 minutes can be a very long time to wait, not so bad for a melee based toon who has many shot for special situations (mmmm, beholdery weakening goodness) but its put me off playing an archer. yes i know how weak ranged combat is, but then i am in an RP guild so its my right to make gimps
