When is 32 point buy better then +2 in stat?
As some people look more into the stats then into the other benefits of the race i thought of this question. Having the base of 8 in a stat make the cost like this for raising the stat: 8-> 14 6 points 8 -> 16 10 points 8-> 18 16 points Comparing this with the cost for raising the stat with a base of 10: 10-> 14 4 points 10-> 16 6 points 10-> 18 10 points From this numbers you get the conclution that +2 is more woth then a 32 point buy if you like to get 17 or more int the stat when you get +2. And that 32 point buy is better if you like to get 15 or less in the stat you get +2. Asume that you get two +2 in diffrent stats that you like to raise. Then the +2 is better as soon as you like one stats to go above 14. If not they are equal. Comparing the stats of 28 point drow with a 32 point elf gives that: A) If you like to have 17 or higher in char or int you get higher stats with drow. B) If you like to have 15 or higher in char and int you get higher stats with drow. C) If your man intrest is a combination of dex, str, con or wis elf gives better stats. (Then there is ofcource there is other diffrences between elf and drow, like weapon selection, racal bonus and enhancments) [EDIT] 4 points in a point buy is not the same thing as +4 stat. In the pointbuy points are used to buy stats. How much stats you get from the points. If you have one stat max (like 18 i str) you can not buy any more stats independet of how many points you have. That's the reason why some classes benefit less from getting more points. The type of builds that benfits most from more points i the one that have a more even distribution of points. A good example is a bow archer as he uses dex for "to hit" and str for damge. So for him 4 more points will be usefull to increase his offensive powers. A bit simplified the builds that are only depending on one attribute for the offensive powers (like wizard and sorcerer with maxed int/char) will only benefit from 4 more points for defensive powers (like higher hp or saves). to me a 32 points character would probably be a warforged since they currently have 26 points at start. and also i wouldn t maximize it but rather use these points to get a character as much balanced as possible.

I allways got the impression that a warforged starts with 2 less in the stats (compared to drow that get 4 more in the stats). But that they have a 28 point buy. As I tried to show with my numbers +2 in stats sometimes better then +2 in point buy. And simalare a 26 point buy would sometimes be better then -2 in stats. |

Multiclassing or characters with 'special' tricks.
E.g.: Fighters want high str and solid con. For Combat Expertise you nead Int 13. For Spring Attack you nead Dex 13. All multiclass chars have high demand for stat points. Paladin: high cha, high wis, high con, high str, ... Monk: high dex (AC), high wis (AC+special tricks), str (we want to make some damage), con (HPs and saves), Int (monks get nice selection of class skills)... Overall any characters with 'extras'. |

The first stats you buy in a int/char/wis/dex/con/str costs 1 point each. If you buy more you pay 2 point for each stats. And the latest point you can buy costs 3 point for each stats(ex taking 17 in str/wis). In a 32 point buy get 32 point too buy stats for instead of 28. |
