For those that didn't get my email here#'s a little something for you:
Codemasters Command Centre Newsflash Breaking Flashpoint 2 news – Just had some breaking news, once again, regarding Operation Flashpoint 2. I thought I would send out a little mail to those interested about it, as my newsletter isn’t due out for another week and I just couldn’t wait to tell everyone the good news. So what is this news???? Well we have finally decided to put everyone out of their misery and tell them the locations of the new Theatres of conflict. Yep you heard right, Theatres!!! A lot of speculation has been thrown towards the Vietnam Camp and yes, these rumours have been partially correct, but on top of that (Vietnam Theatre) we will have settings in Central Europe and in Africa, all based in and around the 1970’s. More details will follow next week in the new edition of CCC, including news on IGI 2’s two new maps, and Battlefield Command’s Q&A Session with the Senior Game Designer. Mike Michael Rowland Community Liaison Officer IGI2/Battlefield Command/Op Flashpoint Codemasters ccc@codemasters.com To sign up for the newsletter goto www.codemasters.com/flashpoint2 and register ur interest

Yea, I think they need to make the European and African theaters modern warfare. I really dont think it will be much fun maning M60 tanks and M113's. They should probly just drop the Vietnam theater and work on Europe and Africe

I wasn't really looking for this sort of play style. I don't think Codemasters will get right how vehicles and infantry were used in Vietnam. Not a lot of NVA tank battalions to mix it up with either. This will support more single player Rambo-type missions Platoon missions. A lot of games are doing this right now.
The only other wars I can think of in 1970 were some guerrila wars and coups in Africa, Cambodia, and South America, and the War of Attrition by Egypt and Israel over the Suez canal. Maybe the consolidation of the Warsaw Pact countries such as Hungary. So jump on this years Vietnam game bandwagon and grab your SKS, M60, or handy bolt action KAR98 rifle for hijinks in the jungle. I think the air-helicopter assault part of this game might save it, but I also think that the air war part of OFP1 was one of the weaker parts of the overall game, with clunky heicopter play and line of sight SAM missles that didn't make a Hind D flinch. Helicopters have proven time and time again to be highly vulnerable to ground fire, even from small arms. The terrain engine is going to need changes to allow tunnels, entrenchments, and fighting positions. This is a real weakness for the idea. I don't think the current engine allows ground cuts and cannot wrap-map tunnels like an enclosed Worldcraft editor can. The tunnels will have to be placed in painstakingly as prefabricated models as the buildings are now in the current game. I have some experience with this from mapping. |

Wow Secret Squirrel you must know the OFP development team intimately to make such sweeping claims about what the game will look like and how it not capable of supporting the types of terrain needed.
I mean, where have they said that they are going to feature battalions of tanks going at each other? (In Vietnam) The interview Marek Spanel gave to a Czech OFP site has already revealed that while they are reusing a lot of code from the old engine, as a lot of it is still good, they are overhauling and optimising it as well, so there will be bigger maps and the engine with support DirectX 9 features too. Basically I just felt your post was a bit harsh and 'doom and gloom-ish' considering the limited amount of information to comment on. I respect your right not to be happy about the era of the conflicts, and yes there are a lot of Vietnam era games out there already (ranging from LOS Vietnam which IMHO is crap, to Vietcong which is very immersive and a lot of fun) but personally I am looking forward to seeing what the OFP engine (revamped!) will make Vietnam look like. Lets also remember that OFP was based on a fictional scenario (not to mention location) so the Vietnam/ African/ European conflicts again could also be based on fictional or 'what if' scenarios. Anyway this isnt a personal attack, just rebuttal on your statement! Hopefully all will be revealed at E3...

I applaud your post Wolfman and I don't feel the need to add too much.

Thanks for the email! good to know that BIS aren't limiting OFP2 to yet another US of A patriotic march, whihc frankly gets real boring after a while, if you're not an American i imagine
Anyway the missions in Africa would have to involve special forces, the french/italians etc.. well maybe, those 2 nations once played a large part in Africs history. Central Europe could be good to, in particular i would love to see a Warsaw pact invasion of West Germany etc... the doomsday crisis that we all expected to happen when we were children (or when i was a child to be more to the point). Expeimenting with guerilla warfare in the Congo could be very good fun! As for Island sizes i'm assuming that the coast/mountains/rivers will be the invisible borders that stop us traversing all of the continent....and i hate invisible walls - sure they need to be ingame to prevent ludicrous amounts of hardware to render a continual landmass, but there is nothing more horrible then running along and suddenly stopping and sliding in one direction or another, because that's where the game cuts out, i fear it will impact on tactical choice in the game. Sure the islands had invisiible walls as well ie you can't swim out to sea, but there were huge expanses of land to play with. Hopefully BIS will retain the freedom and flexibility of OFP in the new environments. |

problem with coasts/rivers is that if they are implementing swimming and amphibious warfare then these shouldnt be impassable obstacles. sheer mountain faces will do it, but there arent many mountain basins in europe....
obviously the theatres will be massive, perhaps cycling terrain like IGI? i assume the terrain in IGI was cycling, i got bored after about an hour of walking to find the edge... =)
