There is a new site being released in September called "Good old games" (or GoG), that will sell only the old classics reconfigured to be compatible with modern machines.
So far they've stated prices per product will range from $5.99 to $9.99, and all products are DRM free as the company hates intrusive software just as much as everyone else. Check it out here |

Looks like an excellent idea. Don't know why Freespace 2 is there given that it's a free download with a huge mod community. I guess it's a chance for people to buy the original retail version for sentimentality.

Well if you read the various 'bonuses' of purchasing via the site, you'll see with each purchase you don't just get the game, you also get expansions, mods, backgrounds, guide books and all sorts of extra goodies thrown in for free.
So perhaps the benefit of purchasing FS2 from the site will be it will source directly to all the major mods (or at least offer modders a chance to provide their work via the site) and make it all nice and localised rather then having to chase down 20+ differant sites. |

Well Freespace 2 itself is now open source and is available to download completely free.
Fans of the game have also updated the game to utilise more modern graphical effects to make the game look quite impressive. Just do a google search and you'll easily find the opensource project site. |

There's quite a lot of offshoots of FS2 using the open source engine., there are also privateer remakes as well. In fact I believe the FS2 projects possibly outnumber the commercial space sims released over the last 10 years.
