Default New Graphics Card Suggestions?

I've come to the conclusion that it's time to lay my GF FX 5600 to rest as City of Heroes recently had a graphics upgrade (and I can't access the shiney stuffs) and I was wondering what the best graphics cards are... the cheaper the better, but at the same time I want it to be really high end stuff. Oh and before you suggest anything, it's gotta be nVidia... ATI cards dislike CoH apparently...

Okay.. suggest away!

I've got a 6600GT and it's great! Very good price and can do most high end stuff such as Doom 3 and EQ2

Good for those with a medium budget!

Yeah I'd agree, that's a good card. Though tbh, the whole geforce 6 series is good.

Odd, my Ati 9800 Pro runs CoH just fine... should be a cheap card by now tho, wouldn't recommend it for buying with long-term in mind, as mine is running for some years now .

I'd buy what's reasonable within my budget. If you got too much money, go for a high-end card like the 7800 whatever the "uber version" of it is, preferably in SLI mode j/k . If you are restricted by a budget, go price/quality based.

Oh, my card runs CoH fine too, I just can't get any of the cool options... like, remember the water Jack? It was flat and made up of several layered images... with a better graphix card you get it actually rippling in 3D with objects below the water (like a foot or something) all rippling too... some pretty wicked stuff.

I also use an ATI 9800, I didn't have any trouble with the CoV beta or with CoH when I played it. I can't recall what my graphic settings were though, so I can't tell you if I made any sacrifices... usually I don't Sorry I can't be more helpful, I'm not much of a hardware Guru and usually go with the flow when it is time to upgrade.

Damn Zik, planning on spending £250 on a 7800? >,<. Got an old 5600 myself, was worried that if I bought a recent game I'd have to replace it as well so was looking around (thankfully it runs Call of Duty 2 fine which is the only game I've purchased for years).

I'd go for a 6800/6600 myself, not worth the extra £100~£150 just to get the newest thing out in my opinion. Also isn't the 7800 PCI-E only? Some old motherboards won't support that right? Be terrible to buy a card only to find you can't use it.

My current card is a 5600 actually heh...

The thing is, if I was going to get the 6800 it's only £50 cheeper than the 7800, so I might aswell go with the 7800 since it will last longer.

The 6600 is a more reasonable price, however it's downfall is that if it doesn't run all the graphics options then it's a waste...

I always found the top graphics card to be about 2 years ahead of the game. The 5600 can run Doom 3 on Ultra settings, even though it's positively ancient in computer terms, at least I had no problems with it. So I'd imagine that right now both the 6800,6600 and the 7800 wouldn't have any problems with any game currently on the market.

Not sure what I would do with only £50 difference though, sort of at the point where I would be tempted, but I'd still go for the lower card as there's no point getting the 7800 when it would be something else on my system acting as the bottleneck even with a 6800 I imagine. (hence it's £50 for no increase in performance at all)
