Default Die Rolls

Hi Everyone,

I am totally new to the whole D&D world, would someone be able to explain to me the purpose of a die roll, just that I noticed while looking through the manual and coming accross the hud explanation it said d20 then said this shows your last die roll etc etc.

If you could give some examples that would be most appreciated.

Regards,

Az

The D&D 3.5 is based on the d20 System (or the other way round) which menas that you use a 20 sided Die fore mots of the Checks in the Game (the Damage Rolls and percent rolls use diffrent dices)

You want to use a Skill? you roll a d20 plus The points you spent in that Skill plus the corresponding Stat Modifier

You want to do a Strengthcheck? You Roll a d20 plus your Strenght Modifier.

You Attack a Monster? You roll a d20 plus your Base Attack Bonus plus your Dex or Str Mod.

Therfore there is a d20 displayed in the Hud when you Attack or use certain Spells. Normally its above your Focus Orb.

Just to clarify in case you are still confused, as Skarra said D&D 3(.5) edition rules are based on a d20 system to greatly simplify all the rolls that Pen and Paper roleplayers have to make, by making the majority of them simple d20 rolls.

For example:

To attack a kobold which has an AC of 15 you roll a d20 add your to hit modifiers (which are shown in your inventory for your weapon of choice) and if the total rolled is 15 or greater you have suceeded in hitting it.

or:

You are a rogue and come upon a locked chest. The game would have assigned a difficulty to the chest based on the lock quality etc. You then roll your d20 and add your total modifier (shown in your skills page) to the number rolled if you beat the difficulty number then you open the lock, otherwise you fail.

Some dice rolls will not show up above your focus orb, for example a search roll, the constant listen and spot rolls etc that are taking place. This is so that if you search and dont find anything you do not know whether it is because there is nothing to find, or because you just rolled low.
