Default What happens when you die

Hi all,

Brand new player here.

In World of Warcraft, when you die, you have to run back and find your corpse.

What happens in DDO, if anything?

Sorry to ask, but I don't have the game yet so no manual just yet.

Thanks in advance,

Crucifer

What happens when a player dies?

Here’s a quote from the MMORPG.com QA #2 with David Eckleberry:
"When a character dies in D&D Online, a few things happen. First, their body falls to the ground and soon vanishes. In its place the character drops a stone on the ground, what we call a soulstone, onto the ground below. Meanwhile, the character himself becomes a ghost that is invisible to living characters. The ghost can’t affect things in its state, and it can’t wander very far from the soulstone that is its anchor in the world. Moving too far away automatically leashes the ghost back to his soulstone. Another character, however, can pick up the soulstone, in which case the ghost is now leashed to the player, and can stay with his living companions, though not interact with them. Finally, an XP penalty is assessed.

As a ghost, a character has three ways to return to life and resume their play. Their first choice is to leave the dungeon or outdoor area they died in, and return to life within the confines of the city. The ghost can also be resurrected by a sufficiently powerful cleric. Finally, if the ghost reaches a resurrection shrine—a magical shrine found in most, though not all dungeons—he can be resurrected there.

As far as the XP loss goes, our goal is to encourage player skill and problem-solving, without making the occasionally loss of life actually debilitating. The amount of XP lost is far less than a total level as it is in the pen-and-paper game. XP loss can also be mitigated through a variety of spells and certain resurrection shrines."

When you die there is only 3 ways to return to life.
-Get ressurected by a cleric.
-Release which will send you back to the tavern where you bound.
-Or get a party member to take your soulstone to a resurection shrine where you can be resurected by clicking it.

Ok lets assume that the group takes the soulstone with them and later on resurrects the character.

Will the rezzed character share in any xp that happened while he was dead (say the completion of a quest part)?

What happens to the soulstone if the player logs out? I presume the soulstone will vanish and the character will reappear at his bound tavern if enough time has elapsed (i.e. he simply hasn't lost connection).

Sorry to ask so many questions, bit of a newb here

XP gets awarded at the moment you leave the dungeon I believe and you've got all the objectives completed, but I could be wrong there.

You should also bear in mind that you are only 'dead' at -10 hp. When you are knocked to less than 0 hp you are only unconcious. You fall immobile to the floor, and every few seconds, you make a saving throw to see if you stabilize. If you fail, you loose one hp and continue to 'bleed-out'. If you succeed you stabilize at that number of hps. If another player can get to you and perform the heal skill (or a heal spell) on you, you are healed to 1hp (or to whatever the spell gives you) and can carry on.

Having now died on a number of occasions (purely as a test you understand). I noticed that before lvl 2 no xp penalty is made however my first death at lvl 2 earned me a 100xp penalty.

You can see other ghosts if they are in your party (at least this has so far been my experience anyway). This helps the char with the soul stone stay close the the poor guy who died.

I do recommend not getting killed as the screen is B&W and very wierd.

(PS are you Chiron the Shaman from WoW on the DB server?)
