Because they want more teams in the competition - open it up more. It hasn't been changed for 12 years - it's not like the revolving Champions League rules. True, there's more money in it because there's more teams but as a rule, I think it's great there's more. 15 European sides go into the World Cup and 16 into the European Championships - so it's pretty equal.

And plus, most obviously, there's lots more European countries than there were 15 years ago!

But in the first few they had 8 groups of 4.

32 teams, like the world cup, how the hell did they get 32 Eropean teams, there are only about 16 in the EU today.

After they changed it, 2 groups of 4

8 teams, no QFs, not many ppl entered becauseof the revolution in Yugolavia,

After that to the present day. 4 groups of 4

16 teams

There have never been 32 teams in the actual tournament. I think you are referring to the amount of nations trying to qualify into the actual European Championship finals.

I'm kind of repeating what has already been said, but hopefully in more detail.

For the first 2 years of the European Championships there was a straight knockout system for 16 teams; with no qualifying to gain entry into the actual tournament. However, in 1964 there were 26 teams trying to qualify into the tournament.

From 1968 to 1992 there were between 31 and 33 teams trying to qualify into one of the 8 places avialable for the finals of the championship. Where:

- For the peiod 1968 to 1976, the Championship began with a straightforward 8-team knockout stage (i.e. the Quarter-finals).

- In 1980, the tournament consisted of a group format of 2 groups of 4, with the top team from each group advancing striaght to the final; and the two nations that were in second place competing in the 3rd place play-off.

- From 1984 to 1992, the top two teams from 2 groups of 4 advance to the semi-finals.

From 1996 onwards, the Championship follows the system of four groups of four, with top two going through to the QF. There were a total of 47 nations trying to qualify into the actual tournament in 1996, and 49 qualifiers in 2000.

It wasn't that, they had 8 groups of 4 in the 1960 -72 championships. These were qualifying groups, but as only 1 team went to the championships into the QF's so they missed ou the group stage.
