Default State of the old game? JGC PvP vs Carebear Stare

Heya,

This is a bit of an ask, but could someone explain how PvP was eventually handled in JGC? The last I played there was Civ / HG tags, bounties, Reg / Unreg. But I've heard some stuff that suggests there were changes.

Can anyone sum up how they try to keep the balance between civvies and combat, and whether it works?

I have, um, strong feelings about the subject (doesn't everyone?) but I don't want to start unzipping my ignorance and waggling it about for all to see...

I think it moved from Civ/HG to some more carebearish system called MT. someone will have to explain that one.

I liked the Civ/HG system. Civ offered a little protection vs your own faction, but vs other factions not really so much. I dont like systems that make people totally immune to PvP death as it leads to economic expliots, spying, and other exploits.

Holy crap, it's BladeR! Yay! I was in CoR in late beta, early release - Heathen or Lemming or something similar. Anyway, not a reunion thread...

I argued back in JGC - and expect to here - that the game needed less protection to reduce the impact of griefing. At a certain point attacks on civilians are so rare that they never have protection (remember all those "escort for hire" squads that shrivelled and died?), and the dead civvy can point to a system that discourages the act to be further annoyed. If it's built into the game a little better, it can work for everyone.

I think protection can be offered with careful map building and perhaps judicious AI use, as well as rewards for "structured griefing" that funnel greifers into something manageable. Add in greater rewards for risky mining and trading to make up for losses and pay for help (escorts or just plain ol' scouts). Anyway, getting ahead of myself, since I'll need to see how it went after my time.

A lot of players hated the Civ/HG tag system when it was first implemented, but would kill to have it back after the half-done MT system. Just because someone is MT does not mean you have open firing rights, your factions must have the war meters moved sufficiently. Since a faction could not be at war with itself, multifaction squads suffered. For instance, two squads with both Sols and Octs battling each other. If Octs from each squad engage each other, they take bounties as their faction isn't at war with itself.

I didn't like the MT tags myself as well which is the reason why I stopped playing the Classic Jumpgate.

The MT tag replaced the Honor Guard tags with some differences as from what I remember. Kill stats are increased only on MT vs MT tag kills, you have to do 10 missions to take it off.

There was supposed to be a privateer tag system in place as well where it's like the MT but it gives one faction pilot the ability to serve in another faction's military which may solve the problem with no-multifaction squads.

And there was a pirate tag which claims to be the new HG tag. Just about anyone with any tag can shoot pirate tagged pilot down and some squads have strict rules about someone with pirate tags automatically being the bad guy so it has no use wither unless if you want to be harmless cargo stealer.

I really don't know what tag system this game will come up with. It's actually worth waiting for an answer.

This was discussed on the old ND forums, search there for the answer. Just search military (mil tag and mt are too short per the forum settings, damn ND).

But basically spend some time reading through the threads and you will start to see the problem with MT.

Unfortunately its hard to answer the question, what is the MT tag, since it was never documented worth a damn and there are so many rules and one-off issues with it, that its nearly impossible to understand, let alone explain. Someone did once, and it was a massive post, but I can't find it.

That will come up a lot lord, and the problem is, that you have to now go to a 2nd forum to search for the stuff, and the character minimum for search makes it damn near impossible to search for stuff like pvp, mt tag, etc
