A lot of beta players out there were saying that they wouldn't buy the "broken" IGI2 based on 0.9 performance. It's not that they didn't like the game because they loved 0.4. They just had major issues with certain aspects implemented in 0.9
Well having played since I got the invite to beta 0.4 I pre-ordered it and having played it briefly this morning I didn't find it to be the nightmare you'd expect based on the rants. Heck, I cleared two objectives fairly quickly. I'm going in again tonight to see what else a good long session brings up but in the meantime, anyone else played it thru from 0.4?? Anyone want to advise those put off by 0.9 (i had minor issues which several testers considered major) whether to buy it or not?? I'll post back in this thread tomorrow on what I found. Love it.
None of these 'game breakers' have occured. I am just basking in the joy of a new game online before all the tricks and strategies are all worked out. Lots of freeform play and suprise tactics.

I'm glad to say that I had absolutely no difficulty playing thru all the multiplayer maps last night on codemasters.co.uk
One of the "major" objections to 0.9 was the increase in falling damage. Can't say I ever fell to my death last night. The MP maps are quite varied and Timberland has some very tall peaks and steep slopes, although forestland (the raining, destroy the SAM sites one) has some too. But I never fell or took large amounts of falling damage. Redlands is a cool map with Mexican style arroyos (gullies and mini-canyons) that channels people along the paths. Stray from the path and risk falling. But there are wires aplenty to get around on, Tarzan style! I'm afraid I neglected to check out the fire rate of the glock as I nearly always purchased a Desert Eagle. Does anyone know if it's the .50 cal? Heck, even Lara has .50s so IGI have no excuse! The Makarov didn't seem too slow although I usually bought the Magnum revolver for it's stopping power... (MAGNUM FORCE!) The trees were good but never as dense as in Timberland but hey, it's a timberland. Forest level was cool with the rain a constant downpour that really added to the level's atmosphere and there was moderate cover in this map that again assisted both sides if they wanted to be concealed. Chinese Temple, Redlands and Sandstorm had little in the way of concealing vegetation. There were also many beta testers decrying the horrendous netcode in 0.9 over 0.4. Gotta say that I experienced no slow downs at all on the server that I played on for at least 2-3 hours. Admittedly, the number of people playing on it dropped to about 4 per side, but then I switched to a 14 player server with me making 15. No problems there for an hour. FYI I have ADSL which gives me a ping of 27 on average. I didn't see any floaters or dancers as complained of in 0.9 posts (although i have seen them in lagged out 0.9 servers). The upshot is I can easily see myself "wasting" many a night on this game in it's current state. I'll probably spend a lot of it "shouting" instructions to newbies about blue dots, red dots et al. but I know it'll be worth it. Cya online! |

As a beta tester, I played the various versions and had some initial issues with 0.9. However, by fine tuning many of my settings, most went away and I gradually found it better than it's predecessor. The major problem was slow mouse response, which went away when I increased the mouse sensitivity setting. Initially, I also found the additional trees and brush on 0.9 to be overdone, but now I think I prefer it that way compared to the barren landscape of previous versions. I would have preferred to have some of the trees and structures to take on damage, but no such luck. With each successive release, I think the game has improved, but I've had to go back and customize settings to get the most out of my performance - and that's on a P4 3.06GHz system (specs below). I think most of the changes have been positive, although some of the weapons were maybe improved a bit too much. I've hit people from impossible distances with weapons that shouldn't be accurate at all from that far away. The Aug, for example, seems more accurate than most of the sniper rifles. I am still trying to decide if I will buy the retail version, but most likely I will. I think something was in the beta code that causes addiction, like the way McDonalds makes their fries. I'm having withdrawal symptoms already and every once in a while I go back to the demo for a quick fix. If I do buy the retail version, I will probably only play multi-player.
