Exclamation IGI2 it was not worth the wait!

After waiting so long for IGI2 and downloading the HUGE 138mb single player game I must say the game is disappointing both in terms of interaction with the game world and the very, very poor computer AI. Another dubious feature is the screen being cluttered by icons and weapons (why?) For newbie players I can understand these things, but come on, please add a 'hide icons' option or key.

Some parts have improved since IGI1. The buildings and structures seem a lot more detailed and the addition of water is a nice, new feature that helps break up the landscape.

The demo says 90% complete. Well, I can only hope that the other 10% includes more realistic A.I. (the current movement patterns and animation looks like something from 1993!) From a playability point of view the game still feels like a sequence of disjointed animations that seem to break any illusion of 'being there'. Hey look, another lock to pick and another long, boring ladder to climb. Perhaps its the switch between 1st and 3rd person which causes this.

The 3d engine performance is another point. It has improved since the original IGI but seems to get slower and slower the more you play the game (I'm running a Pentium 4 1.7gHz + geforce3 64mb).

Overall I found the game unsatifisying when compared to the original and very, very poor when put against the likes of Hitman2's superb engine and greater interaction. Hitman2 has a sense of stealth and tension which IGI2 hasn't got.

How come in IGI you can't shot out the lights or enter certain buildings? Also why can you shoot enemies who are on the opposite side of a door but their arms/weapons show through?

Ah well.. better luck next time Innerloop!

The fact that you are seeing them is ofcourse a clipping error (which should be fixed), but the fact that you can shoot them through doors is intentional (unless the door is a metal slab). As could you in IGI1.

Shame really it looked so promising.

Played online a few times now and its getting unplayable - Graphics r too slow.

Call me old fashioned but surely coders need to aim at lower spec machines so it runs faster on the newer machines.

1.2 ghz and 64mb grafix card should be enuff yes ? You shouldnt design games to make you buy extra hardware surely ?!

ping of 30-90 that must be good but still characters all over the place. Lag on graphics when outside and action on screen i.e. close ups - I guess this is a sniping only game then (if u can catch up with the characters).

I was so interested in this game and playing on a server created on my same PC run so smooth I was hoping the same online. Did I want too much ?

CS is getting old but at least its reliable and playable. 1.6 soon.

If this is going to make it then it needs a **** load of work doing to it (to run on my PC). Am I the only one who must have a **** machine ? Or does everyone else have a mainframe sitting there just to run this ?

Grrrrr - Disapointed.

From a developer:

Note this demo was put together over a month ago, and the game's come a long way since then. The biggest change is the AI - the AI was not balanced, and was more buggy than we would have liked. AI do investigate cameras, their alarms are automated though. A G17 shot that explodes a camera should attract attention. I could go on, but the bottom line is the game is in much better shape now here in Oslo than when we built the demo.
I'll also add that I'm running an AMD XP 1800+, 512DDR, GF4ti4400, and the game runs like butter.

Toggle inventory is available in the controls menu, defaults are '0' (Zero) and 'KP_/'.

By the looks of it - your talking about the Multiplayer here???

The thread started with a gripe about single player - and tack has changed to multiplayer.......are they not two separate entities at the moment?.....Go figure!!

WEll just for everyones info - I found the SINGLE PLAYER demo runs (and looks)much better on my machine than the MULTIPLAYER demo does..

And for those who have not noticed, the demo does state 90% complete...and it was mastered over a month ago (Confirmed by codies)

So you lot do the math...

I have a p4 with 1.6 GHZ, 512 MB RAM and a Geforce 3 with 64 MB and the game is excellent with all details turned to the maximum except of the shadows, wich i turned off.

I think the singleplayer demo is great, because it gives you the same feeling as playing IGI 1.

Well there you go - More of the same would have pleased me to be honest. But theres many improvements in the new game, thats got to be worth something.

Ive bought many duff games lately for £30 quid or more, which just have not cut it in terms of atmosphere and tension.

Is that not the reason we play games, to be sucked in by the environments and to be given a feeling that we are REALLY there and taking part?.

In my humble opinion - IGI 2 succeeds admirably on this count alone..

PS: On the subject of the game not running on lower spec machines!

Thr0ttl3, If you frequent the beta test area, you will see there are guys there who run the game with much the same and sometimes lesser system specs than yourself without any problems! It may be a configuration issue?

Peace to you all

Probably - But when I'm playing in the early hours after downing a few cans of beer then the best place to vent my frustration is a forum - that way when i'm sober the next day I can see what I said lol.

Still - I will try and reduce / play with configs etc. but I still have moved this from def. purchase to maybe if a patch for the Radeon is released.

Thr0ttl3 - Slightly bitter and very twisted

Default Single player was good

I liked the demo of that mission. It was very good and had made a lot of improvments since the last game. It was good to see that when the alarm was raised, the enemy all went out in about groups of five or six and actually looked like they had some intelligence!
Hope they have different variety of missions and not all the same.
