you are not proficient with that item

I'me a lvl 7 elf hunter, and I bought a helmet and earned a shield, but I can not equip it, I get the message 'You are not proficient with that item'. I'm new to MMORPG's.

Have a look at the icon of the item in your inventory, if it's highlighted in red you can't use it. This could be because your class can't use it, or you're not high enough level yet.

we cant use shields at all, and if the helmet isn't light you won't be able to use it until you get medium.
