Xbox controller troubles

I have the PC-DVD version of the game for Vista 32bit. I also have an xbox controller not an xbox 360 controller. I have down loaded the microsoft patch for the xbox controller and installed it. The trouble I am having is the left thumb stick I use for the left/right control will not work correctly. Its either full turn or off there is no in the middle slow turning. It does not gradually turn the wheels, its full to the left/right or not at all.

I have made adjustments in game and in the control panel game controllers and still nothing. Do I really need to get an 360 controller? Please advise...
