(Apologies to anyone who already read this post over at the XBox forums - posted there first then realised that we actually have developers who listen over here!)
I've played driving/racing games for years on PC and Consoles and never really got above 'average' at them. Something no game to date has done yet is give you a tutorial mode for even one track! How about someone adding a tutorial mode, in a set car obviously like maybe the 320si, where the radio comments etc. are replaced by an imaginary instructor sitting next to you in car talking you through the track as you drive round it? Like you get if you pay for touring car lessons at a real track? He/she could tell you what speed to take the corners at, where to brake, advise on lines and when to hit the apex, etc. and some of us might actually have a light bulb come on inside our heads and go "Wow - so that's what I've been doing wrong!" Make it The Stig taking you round and I'd pay extra for it!!

its not called RaceSchool: GRID buddy =/
id like to find out things like speeding in corners, braking and so on for my self. wouldnt be that nice if someone tells me anything :o a little tip, you got a little indicator at the left bottom of your minimal which tells you if you are speeding in too much into i corner. for "newbies" that might work fine but you have to go over that pushing your car to the limit to win the hard races. and let me tell you, if you are sliding through a corner seeing your tires nearly touching the green and speeding the hell outta there thats a LOT of fun.

GTR2 has a training system for every track that shows braking points etc. I don't think it's really needed for GRID as it's not that sort of game.
You can drive the perfect line in time trial mode but try doing it in a race and you'll get flattened by someone throwing it up the inside. And you'll never get from 12th to 1st by driving the correct line!

It's great that you guys are so good at GRID - really it is.
I don't think it's too much to ask for a basic track tutorial for those of us who aren't though. Thanks for your input.

It is quite simple really.
If you're going into a left hand corner you should be on the right hand side of the track. Conciously look at the mid point of the corner you're going into. Brake, maintain enough throttle to just stop you sliding off then turn aiming to hit the point you were looking at with your left front wheel. By now you should be looking down the track not at the corner apex. As you hit that point feed the throttle back in and use as much of the track width as you can on the way out. If you keep sliding off then you're going too fast. There are only so many types of corners out there so you don't really need a track by track tutorial just learn how to take slow, medium and fast corners. The tips above will get you start on 90% of corners and I'm sure you'll soon get the hang of the variations. There are lots of different ways of cornering that are particular to the physics that GRID uses but the above still applies as a starting point and will work for most driving games.

Racing Guide
First two and a half pages of this are pretty informative. I wrote it for NFS:MW but the pages I mentioned are general racing concepts. Remember this: "Wide on the walls, close on the curves." You want to try and maximize the amount of time you're driving straight. That means getting through a turn as quickly as possible while still maintaining traction and speed. Go wide to the outside before the corner and then pass through the corner as close to the inside as possible then leave the corner going wide on the outside wall again. If you're skidding "drifting" through a corner you're doing it wrong and you're losing valuable traction. Losing traction ruins your ability to accelerate and even though it feels like you're going through the turn faster, you'll be leaving it slower. Since you gain most of your speed in the straights you want to be going as fast as possible coming out of a turn to maximize your speed between the turns. A lot of Racing games will give you hints at your optimum racing line. Look at the track surface and you'll see the dark area from the tire marks. You'll notice that they draw a line around the track. ![]() Generally if you follow that line you'll be able to get some good times.

I've noticed that some peeps mention drifting around the corner. And that is a slow way to go around a corner. But, there are 2 types of drift; 2 wheel drift (therefore the Japanese sport of drifting) and 4 wheel drift. 4 wheel drift is what the car is meant to do, if the game has the physics setup correctly.
I play this and gtr/2 and I try to get 4 wheel drift (unsuccessfully most of the time I might add ). But if you can get it just right, then you will get a slight amount of 4 wheel drift. Steps of soap box

When you say 4 wheel drifting, do mean that the tires actually slide across the tarmac?
Or are you referring to letting off the gas and brakes simultaneously to let the car roll through a corner?
