Default The rapier

In the neverwinter nights game, a rapier can be used as a light weapon by medium sized creatures, thus making a very nice and stylish offhand weapon, does the same happen in pen n paper D&D?
Because I want to make my fighter a dual wielding rapier tornado, kind of duelist style.

What? No.
A Rapier has never been a light weapon, nor an off-hand weapon.
It's only light for the purpose of finesse.

In Neverwinter nights, the rapier was a light weapon for medium creatures.
So for medium creatures its like having a light/small off-hand weapon, with the same penalties those weapons have (-2 for offhand I think).
At least thats what my NWN manual says.

I always used Shortswords for dual-wielding, damn.

A rapier is meant to be a medium sized weapon, but light enough to be used off hand just like it would if it was a small weapon. It's still classed as light as it works with Weapon Finesse.

However in DDO you still get an off-hand penalty for using it when you shouldn't.

off hand always gives you a -2 penalty, regardless of weapon. Using anything but a small weapon or a rapier gives you additional -2. If it isn't the same in DDO, it's either a bug or a rulebreaker.

A rapier is a medium weapon that is treated like a light weaapon for purposes of weapon finesse only.
D20SRD - Rapier
D20SRD - Weapon Finesse - there's a comma after light weapon

This means you will incur penalties for a medium weapon when you use it in the offhand; unless you're a large creature of course

Well the rapier isn't classed as a light weapon, even for weapon finesse. It is just a weapon you can use weapon finesse on. As you correctly point out that comma makes a world of difference but a lot of people miss it, the devs of NWN included included it would appear

Rules: rapier- class:medium weapons 1d6 18-20 x2 piercing
1,5 m range / counts as light weapon for weapon finesse check and while in clinch/ penalties as offhand in the same way as another medium classed weapon (longsword)/ elfs do get the skill to use it by race
