Default Dex Boni on shields

Can someone please explain to me how they work, especially together with dex bonus on armor?

I cannot figure it out somehow =/

Which dex bonus on shields are you talking about?

I don't think there is a max dex bonus stat for shields.

If you're talking about armor check penalty, those of armor and shield stack.

If your talking about stat enhancements on items, these don't stack.

Does that answer your question?

i think the tower shields have a max dexmodifier, if your dex is higher than that you will loose the bonuses as if you were wearing a heavy armor.

I had a tower shield with a max dex bonus of 2, and I was still getting the +4 dex bonus from my chain shirt.

you should check that again

tower shield's max dex is 2
chain shirt's max dex is 4

the lower max aplies to your AC (and skills like tumble, hide etc is they kept it how DnD 3.5 handles it)

having a dexterity of 20 and wearing a chain shirt +1 and a towershield +1 your ac would be something like that

10 Base AC
05 +1 Chain Shirt (armor check penalty of -2)
05 +1 Tower Shield (armor check penalty of -10)
02 dexterity bonus

AC 22 + feats, enhancements, aura, race boni etc pp
You must remember that you still get a high armor check penalty of 12

I checked it again, and I got 6 AC, even tho by your explanation I should have only gotten 4.

could you please clarify this a bit. Could you go ingame and hover the mouse over your AC and tell us how your ac is calculated and what equipment you are using exactly?

maybe we can shed some light on this subject

The dex-restriction from the tower shield does not seem to actually be enforced.

Yesterday I was fighting with a breastplate: armor 5, max dex bonus 3 (have dexterity 16, too), I ended with an armor score of 29..

base: 10
armor: 5
dex bonus: 3
tower shield: 4
combat expertise: 5
fighter combat expertise bonus: 2
sum: 10+5+3+4+5+2= 29

It should only have been 28 though, capping the dex bonus at 2.

Fighter level 1 (rank 3) btw. With action boost I even get to 31 armor, blocking adds 2 more.

Zolena, are you sure you didn't wear that headstart necklace of +1 natural armor? Might explain it.

I will roll a halfling warrior when I get home and give him 20 dex and a storebought heavy armor, medium armor, light armor and both heavy shield and tower shield to test some settings.
with +5 dex bonus you should be able to see it more clearly. I can delete that toon afterwards
.(^_^).

Teehee, I wish, but they bugged that up right before I rerolled my characters 2 days ago. So, no, do not have that item. Only have the waterbreathing item.

The preorder items are currently not given to new players, but a patch is in the works (there's an official posting in announcements concerning that).
