Smile Solution to desktop crash after splash screen

Hi there

I believe I have a valid solution for the problem most people are having, which seems to be that the demo crashes straight back to the desktop after displaying the intro movies/splash screens.

The problem is the same as Battlefield 1942 had when it first came out, which led me to try the same way of fixing it. The game won't run if you're using any method of forcing refresh rates under Win2k or WinXP. This includes programs like Refforce, NVfix, etc, as well as the refresh rate overrides in the built-in control panels of both Nvidia and ATi.

I have an ATi 9700pro. What I did was to go into display properties->settings->advanced->displays then click on the monitor tab for my primary display. I then set DirectX override rate to disabled, and clicked on the "use DDC info" button. I then applied the settings, and made sure no other refresh rate overriding programs were active. After doing this, I was able to play through the demo with no problems whatsoever.

Hope this helps some people out there!

I'm describing the settings for the ATi control panel - the one for Nvidia drivers is obviously completely different. It's been a while since I had an Nvidia card, so I can't remember exactly where the refresh rate overrides are. I seem to recall the settings coming up under Direct3D in a pop-up type window which appears to the left of the control panel. Just make sure all the overrides are off, and that you have no other 3rd party apps controlling them either.

Did this solution help anyone out there?

hey

i had exactly the same problem with the demo, i also have the same graphics card as you. what i did was download the new drivers for the card at http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp they updated the drivers recently.

if that still doesn't work then try opening the control panel for the nvidia desktop properties then, under the program tab, add the colin mcrae game to the list.

this should work.

Default updated geforce drivesr fixed id

It worked fine after downloading the updated gfx adapter drivers, should have thought of that my self.

For others that have geforce with problems:
- download directx 9
- update the drivers

I also installed a fix by exkalibur, but I do not think that fix really adressed my problem.

I did some testing, and it seems it gives an active movie window application error...

I've installed the demo first after doing my new installation (WinXP pro SP1 Dutch) , demo was running fine on this clean windows system
I installed the Divx and Xvid codec and whammm, the famous error... strange though i still can watch the movies with media player....

I then downloaded the standard mediaplayer 9 codecs and installed them... NO help... strange,

uninstalled the divx and xvid codecs... no help

tried several things... No luck...

Please codies, solve this , since the demo is looking great otherwise !!!!

regards

for me it is gone worse

i had to uninstall it completely , not even with the movie fix it was running anymore... grrrr darn....

and i have the 44.03 nvidia drivers ! so that does not help either...
no strange codecs also, just Divx codec and xvid, so that should not be a problem i think, since other games run fine, i can even look at the movies from this demo in mediaplayer without having errors...

but after the splash screen it comes with an active movie window apllication error and some "read" instructions... strange...

back to the first demo and the movie fix then...

and i guess i will not have to buy the game since it won't run anyway it seems... sucks...(not the game, but the situation sucks... damn movie thingie...)

hope they will be able to solve it...
i can watch them without any error with media player and not in the game , strange at least...

anyway hope they solve it...

regards
