I've bought the game too. Same Problem: Black screen, "Protection Error".
The world is going crazy with copy protections. You can't even play games if you own the original. It's the same with the Audio CDs you can't play in your Computer! I'll never buy a game again. Thank you guys.
Today I installed edonkey.

I found a solution to run it anyway.
Right click the Colin McRae Rally 2005 Icon on your Desktop. Select Properties. To the top line, add the word novideo.
Example: "C:\Program Files\Codemasters\Colin McRae Rally 2005\CMR5.EXE" novideo

start the game over this icon.

Red face Same error - and i solved it

Hi
I also got the protection error - but my solution may be isolated to just a few people depending on what software others are using

I recently re-installed my system because CMR05 wouldnt run (i kept on getting blue screen of death - and restarting of PC) ..which is why i wanted a clean, fresh installation..

With all my drivers and service packs reinstalled i installed CMR05.... worked like a bomb (except for the steering wheel issues) !! ... then i had to install NERO so i could burn some discs - after burning i wanted to play CMR05 again...
and THAT is where I got the PROTECTION ERROR

I proved that it was definitely a conflict between CMR05 and Nero - because i uninstalled Nero 6.3.125 and then CMR05 worked again

I think CMR05 is detecting Nero as "emulation software" or something... or it doesnt like Nero for obvious reasons involving illegal copying of stuff...

This is crap !! Codemasters must fix this because both CMR05 and my Nero are legal software!!

Thats just my view - but if you have something like that installed, try uninstall it and see if CMR05 runs for you

Cheers

I all so have nero the same version as you and i do not get any Protection error cmr5 works with nero or without so i think the problem you have is down to some other thing on your system ie some other bit of software.
All can say is it not down nero.
All crashing and problems that people are haveing must be down to your own system setups as i do not have any problems with cmr5 at all
the game is fine and it runs really fine on my system.
Which is WinXp SP2 P4 3.1 Ghz 1GB ram Audigy2 GForce4 TI 4600 DX9.0c and all is well with cmr5

A quick search would have helped you guys...

The Beach Boys

The problem is down to the *latest* version of Nero. The NOVIDEO shortcut should enable you to workaround the problem, whilst we look at a slicker solution.

I have no Protection errors in my game and i don't use the Novideo option. The problem are the DIVX codecs i think. I have installed WinXp with sp1 and sp2 without DIVX codecs. Game works perfectly until the stop error code (hardware problem)
Asus 4P4800 E deluxe and Asus V9999GE VGA card. (64 bits memory dump)
