Default CMR Rally 2 freezes after 10 seconds

I have problem when starting to drive the car. For example in Finland first stage the game freezes soon after passing by the first checkpoint. It freezes every time almost in same place.

The computer is 500 MHz K6-2, Voodoo3 2000, 512Mb ram and 16Gb disc (with plenty of free space) and Win98se. There are no overheating problems and nothing is overclocked.

What can I do to prevent this kind of freezing? Now I can only reset the computer after freezing.

I think, that at the checkpoint, game does some kind of time-calculations,
it needs cpu-power to do, and there is not enough left to calculate frame to screen. Your computer is so old, that it is hard to say the exact reason.
Maybe, you have too many background programs running?
Try to disable them. Hope it helps.

There are no extra programs running, it is same if I start the game right after windows have loaded or if I first use any programs (games etc.) and then start CMR Rally 2.

Funny that requirements are:
Minimum:
Windows 95/98/ME/2000, Direct X 7.0a Required, Pentium 233 MMX CPU, 32 MB RAM, 16 bit 100% directX compatible Soundcard, Compatible 3D Graphics Card with 8 MB RAM, 8x CD-ROM, and 5 MB Hard-Disk Space

Recommended:
Windows 95/98/ME/2000, Direct X 7.0a Required, Pentium III 500 CPU, 128 MB RAM, 16-bit 100% directX compatible Soundcard, Compatible 3D Graphics Card with 32 MB RAM, 24x CD-ROM, 650 MB Hard-Disk Space, and 56K Modem

Can it be, that 500MHz is still too slow? Hope this game isn't only for Pentium, because there aren't any Amd mentioned in requirements.

It is really hard to tell.
Old time soundcards, graphics cards, did not have a mentionable capabilities to do something themselves, they deeded help of CPU, and RAM, all of the time.

Old computer with, a bit newer, cards, meant trouble, because they were more efficient, and so more cpu-and RAM-addicted.
Later, those cards came to, more independent.

At 500 Mhz CPU, all changes, to more modern, were critical. And the difference, between success and disaster, was wafer-thin.
Add, if you can find any, more RAM. It has become rare today, and so, expensive.

And, Defrag, is very important on those, old computers.

I think that 512Mb is maxium to win98se. I can add one 256Mb stick more, but then win98se wouldn't start (total 768Mb). But I don't even see difference when using only 256Mb of ram, maybe the computer is even faster with 256Mb than with 512Mb. And it would be a waste of time to try install Windows Xp to this machine (to get all benefit of over 512Mb memory)
I also use diskkeeper to defrag the disc.

I think that the problem is with software. The game really run smoothly, and there are no sign of freezing, but then like lightning strike, the machine freezes little after first checkpoint. The freezing place is not exactly same every time, but it is very soon after the checkpoint.

No XP, no.
I have done Win98Se with 1 Gb. RAM, no problem at all.
Maybe, you can send a letter to Santa Claus, telling him you forgot something? (Not Vista, no, no, no!!...)
I am sorry, not to be able to help you more.

It's seems that there aren't promblems with my computer at all.

It is only with too new 3DFX drivers. Here, some other have problems too: http://www.gamingexcellence.com/pc/g...7/review.shtml

"Installation of Colin McRae Rally 2.0 was a breeze with no technical problems at all. After installation and a reboot, I began the game and setup my controller and the graphics settings. I began a simple race, and suddenly, the game froze completely solid about 9 seconds into the race. This happened several times before I viewed the readme file looking for a possible fix. I was unable to find a solution until I headed over to the Codemasters website seeking technical support. Through the frequently asked questions list, I discovered the problem was with the specific set of drivers I was using for the Voodoo 3 2000 video card in the PC. This was the most recent set of drivers, the last produced by 3DFX, and I was forced to downgrade these drivers to get the game to run. As soon as these drivers were changed, the game ran smooth. I wouldn't blame Codemasters for this, but felt it was important for anyone using a Voodoo3 video card and experiencing these same problems."

Edit. Yes, I found working graphic card driver v3-w9x-1-05.00. Now the game works.
