Using spears.

Does anyone know whether if you use a spear without a second weapon does it count as a two handed weapon and do more damage and have no penalities?

Nope, spears are simply one handed weapons, that can only be used in the mainhand.

Spears are 1 hand weapons, specialised for using with a shield. Using a spear with two hands is kinda strange, think about how you would hold it to thrust it into your enemy...It would leave you side on and exposed down one side....

If you are talking about reality spear are one the most veristile weapons avaliable, cheap and easy to make.

A spear can thrust, slash and even bludgeon (like a staff). They came in
varying lenghts from the Zulu short spear (3'), to the Pike (12'+). They where used on horse back as lances and used by infantry agains cavalry.

You should watch Hero or Crouching Tiger. That would give you some idea what a spear can be used for (and how).
