You mean Squire?

There are four different looking minor armaments.
Squire
Man-At-Arms
Pilgrim
Commoner

All four increase the heralds armor by a unknown number and change it looks.
Squire is A red haired with mustach and sword wielding squire.
Man-At-Arms wields a Hammer and wears chain mail armor including a coif
Pilgrim is Brother/Friar Tuck from Robin Hood (or just looks like him alot ^^) with a club
Commoner is you standard villager with his little axe

Tailors may be possible to crit-armaments with special stats or so, but i doubt there are better basic armaments yet in the game.

Cool

Squire
Green outfit, very Squirelike.. Nice looking. Use a Sword.

Man-At-Arms
Wearing chainmail, also on his head, looks more "Knightly". Use an Axe.

Pilgrim
A Monk.. Thats it, he looks like a fat little monk and i love him Use a mace/club.

Commoner
Looks exactly as your starter Herald. Use an Axe.

No it doesn't, got moderate armour for herald and doesnt show any diff.
But it maybe safe you to put a trait in for better armour for your herald and can put something else in instead.
Just to let ya know.
