I have been watching the replays of the 2002 races on Speed Channel. This past weekend that showed the races at Oran Park. My question is how many races do they run per round?

They ran two races of 58 laps each that day, but I recall the broadcaster saying something about the races that were run yesterday. Do they run sprint races the day before?

Yeah its great to here that v8s are becoming more popular overseas. So what do you think kieth you like watching the series? 2002 wasnt there best yr, some of the racing was a bit processional but this yr should be different! 2 new models and a new race format.

Major Changes To 2003 V8 Supercar Championship Series
Australian Vee Eight Supercar Company (AVESCO) announced today, major changes to the 2003 V8 Supercar Championship Series.

Plans for a showcase Sydney event, a Melbourne 500 kilometre race, 300 kilometre races and a much closer point scoring system were all unveiled at Sandown Raceway.

In a bold move by AVESCO, Sydney will now host the closing round of the V8 Supercar Championship Series, the first event AVESCO undertakes as sole promoter.

AVESCO CEO, Wayne Cattach said the introduction of this event was a huge coup for the Sydney market.

"The creation of this round gives Sydney a landmark V8 Supercar event that will hold the position of last round in the Championship as its own," said Mr Cattach.

"In a first for Australian touring cars this showcase event will see drivers contest a full grid shootout on Saturday while on Sunday drivers will be challenged by a 400 kilometre race."

Details of the unique nature of this race will be released prior to the opening of the season

Mr Cattach said the decision for AVESCO to move into the role of promoter was one the organisation had been considering for some time.

"We have been looking at promoting our own events for some time but it has been a question of creating an event with the right fit for AVESCO, this event is unique to V8 Supercars and the first for touring cars in Australia.

In 2003 Phillip Island, Eastern Creek, Winton, Queensland Raceway and Oran Park will all conduct single 300 kilometre races.

"We are very excited about the introduction of five 300 kilometre races to the 2003 schedule," Mr Cattach said.

"Fan feedback was one of the major factors when we made changes to the 2003 race formats. We believe these changes will create a better spectacle for fans and provide a wider variety of race outcomes.

"Our 2003 support category line-up is very strong and gives us the confidence that each weekend's race program will have plenty of racing action to excite the fans in addition to our racing," he said.

Formula Ford, the main proving ground for young drivers is back along with an increase in the number of race meetings for the popular Historical Touring Cars.

In 2003 AVESCO will add the great new categories of Carrera Cup and Aussie Racing Cars.

"We are very excited about as the Aussie Racing Cars proved very popular with fans when we trialed them this year," said Mr Cattach.

Carrera Cup is a fantastic new series of full spec purpose built Porsche race cars with complete backing from Porsche Cars Australia.

The popular MGF Trophy Series, Sports Sedans, Saloon Cars and Commodore Cup will also feature on the 2003 Calendar.

The 2003 point score system introduces new possibilities to the V8 Supercar Championship.

"Each drivers worst round will be dropped from their overall championship points at the end of the year," Mr Cattach explained. "This system will also apply to drivers who have not contested the full season.

"The new point score system has smaller 'steps' between positions and descends by the same gap from position to position meaning that point scores through the season will be a lot closer and that the driver who wins will have had to fight very hard to stay in front.

"Another new element of the point scoring systems allows drivers who are not classified finishes but who complete more than 50% of the race distance to accrue points keeping the series points even closer," he said.

As part the new testing rules for 2003 all competing teams will be permitted to do an hour and a half open testing on Fridays at selected rounds.

"Phillip Island, Winton, Queensland Raceway and Oran Park rounds of the Championship will all hold open test sessions in addition to the eight test days allocated to teams in 2003," he said.

"Each nominated test day will be for two race cars only."


That 400Km race will be at Eastern creek late in the yr. 400km with no driver changes, in summer temperatures of 30-40 degrees celcius...in car close to 60 degrees! should make for a very interesting and demanding race!

Thanx for the info Brocky. Unfortunately I won't get to see the 2003 races until they replay them on Speed Channel the end of the year.

I watched the 2002 race from Winton this weekend. That is a great track. All of the V8 tracks are great which makes it such a fun series to watch.

We get v8 supercars in the UK on Motors TV. They show each race about a week or two after they happened. But they show the whol of the Bathurst 1000 live. Pity I dont have this channel. I have to gate-crash my friends house to watch it. :D
