Winton Round 8!

Hey yall. Wintons on Sunday. Is anyone lucky enough to be going? Looks like HRT might have a bit of a challenge on their hands to keep there 100% winning record in tact. Anyhow, heres this:
There is no doubt that this weekend's 8th Round of the Australian V8 Supercar Series is shaping up to be one of the toughest of the 2002 season.

"With no less than 23 V8 Supercar drivers calling this regional Victorian circuit their test track, the home advantage for many teams will make them very hard to beat.

For the Lansvale Racing Team, preparation for this round has been intense, particularly given the unreliability problems that hampered their chances of a podium finish at their home circuit, Sydney's Oran Park Raceway, last month.

According to LRT VX Commodore driver Cameron McConville, there are no illusions about the enormity of the task required to gain a strong result at Winton this weekend, even if Winton is the circuit where the talented 28 year old started his circuit racing career in 1989.

"I have done a lot of miles at Winton and it is a circuit that I have a lot of affinity with. I particularly like the technical aspect of this circuit - it offers unique set-up challenges for every driver and team. With 23 V8 Supercars testing at Winton throughout the season, this round will be tougher to break into the top 15 or 20 in qualifying compared to anywhere else. We will need to gain an effective set up as fast as possible and if we can do that, we will be able to qualify and race well," He said.

For LRT's engineers, the week has been hectic, preparing McConville's Commodore for this round after an extensive test session in Sydney on Wednesday. The test day included the team's endurance race co-driver Warren Luff piloting the second VX Commodore.

Luff continues to progress very well in the lead up to his V8 Supercar debut, which will take place at the next round of the V8 Supercar Series - the VIP Petfoods Queensland 500 on September 14 and 15.

A large crowd is expected to descend upon the Winton Raceway circuit this weekend, located 190km north of Melbourne near the town of Benalla. The circuit features an excellent selection of tight and twisting corners along with a series of long and fast straights. Spectator vantage points are excellent at this regional venue.

All practice and qualifying takes place on Saturday with a full day of bumper to bumper V8 Supercar racing on Sunday.

i dont think that hrt will have a problem at winton
i mean look at bathurst, they didnt have such a good strike rate there and then they won it
they havnt been totally crap at winton
last year mark skaife got 3 rd on the podium

Its only HRT's Bogey track because someone usually punts them off (they should be doing it more :D )

Winton: Boring, tight track, that is in the middle of nowhere and hardly ever produces any good racing.

Ambrose on pole, skaife next, then a whole bunch'a holdens. Who would've thought bowe would be the next best ford. The OzEmail teams coming along pretty well.

My moneys on Ingallsmaking into my fav drivers skaife and mcconville at the first friggin corner.

Interesting change of attitude from the stewards - only one drive through? I was at Winton in 1999, and if I recall correctly it was Lowndes (HRT) who bumped Skaife (HRT) off in the third race...

Isn't it sickening that TWR has the top four championship positions - that is the advantage of a 5 car team!

hrt and kmart might be underneath the same manager as in twr but they r not the 1 team.
my dad works for hrt and he said that they use complete different set ups and dont even go near each others workshop so all of u should get ur facts right

How boring was WInton?

No excitement of overtaking , no major bingles , nuthin!

did ya see on sports tonight the highlights package.....4 christ sake lucky i wasn't home to watch the telecast in full.... they showed two cars close to one another and the slightest of taps and that was a highlight ....sorry but that was just abit too boring for me...

and ONCE AGAIN HRT romps away with it....
Bring back excitement into the V8s please....

I don't know what is required to do that ...in a sense that all parties are happy....oh bugger it, weight penalties....what happened to last year when there was something like 11 different round winners... that was better surely.

i think what the fans want is excitement... superbikes are still fun, bayliss doesn't win every round, motogp is a snoozathon and formula one puts me to sleep quicker than the v8s did at winton... my suggestion...? combine em all, in different classes... have hazards, let cattle loose on the track, have troy draggin ambrose down conrod whose swerving to miss a spun out f1 car...

it'd be fun for us, anyway, and don't fans make the sport? ;)

HRT & Kmart may well be separate operations but they are still owned by TWR, and remind me who did Todd Kelly's car belong to at Oran Park?

Anyhowz, back to winton, it was ridiculous that there wasn't more stop go penalties. I mean, the noyl person to get one was steve owen, for running into the back of Seton in turn one(for about 200m)

Like, Forbes turned around McLean under SAFETY CAR(!), apparently Bowe pushed off Crompton, there were those things at the start of the race, were Faulkner was shoved into the wall, and Lowndes kept diving thru the inside on the grass into the side of people.

and then you see all the stop go penalties at Barbagello and that. It's cRaZy :confused: :confused: :confused: :confused:

But sooner or later someones got to beat HRT, or even TWR, at SOME point during the next few rounds.

There is really something wrong with the officals, If there is going to be penaltys, do it for all offending cars at all tracks, its just so inconsistent. But for me, there shouldnt be any penaltys, unless a move was genuinely dangerous, that would make it exciting again.

Merchandise doesn't rake in much cash for any of the teams, with maybe the exception of HRT (Every second person I see has HRT something!)
Everyone with half a brain knows that SPONSORSHIP is where the majority of the money comes from, be it from Holden, Mobil, or whatever.

And Yeah, the officials are way to hard on penalties, people wanna see a bit of biffin' and bargin'.

But I think they should give out some sort of penalty when someone turns someone else around, unless its the guy who got turned around's fault (if that made any sense)

Too true! Unbelievably I actually have HRT stuff, a '97 Cap which I bought ( back in th days when i was a HRT fan....) and a load of other stuff in the last few years given to me by people who have no idea about V8 Racing and my dislike for HRT....but anyway...

something with abit of character...What happenred to good ol sandown 500 what a fantastic race meeting that was..remember going there in the early 80's even what a great weekend, it ws the traditional leadup to bathurst then...

wat do u think of the decision to make next years race a 1 driver event.i think that if they r to do this they will have to have it like adeliade. drivers wont be able to put up with 30-40 degree heats for 4 hours.

I am 36 have been watching bathurst since I was 5 and I DONT want them to change it from the current format. It would be disastrous!!!

Did anyone notice in the V8 Superstars charity event TC on his idea of one driver at the 500 went from 'more than likely' to 'the board is floating the idea around'.

It was a 'back flip' of note waqsn't it...The swine tried to suggest the 'board' had put the idea forward where i really think it was him...ONLY. He was pushing it and needed to say something. ie: shooting his fat arse mouth off again....christ that guy is a dead set moron of the greatest calibre...I do not believe for one minute he has any true love of the sport....he is only there to pull all the money out of it cough BERNIE cough ,....he can...It is as plain as the warts on my mates girlfriends ......face.
jeez that guy is infuriating....he is single handedly ruining the sport. Along with a load of PRO HRT/Holden persons that do not like to see competition.
