View Full Version : Weird Slowdown problem
The Unlord

Hi,
I'm using the 1.2 Patch, and I had been running the game 'fine' on my GeForce 7600GS at the lowest settings.
Yesterday, I upgraded to a GeForce 9600GT and upped the settings to high, but now I have a very strange problem: about every 10 seconds or so the game sort of shortly slows down, but my framerate doesn't seem to drop. It's hard to explain: it's as if the game itself makes my car slow down for a second, then let's me go again.
I use fraps to check my fps, and I keep getting between 50-60 fps during the slowdown.
During such a slowdown I feel my ffb wheel 'tensing', sort of locking up. I don't know how to explain really.
Once I had damaged the car so the hood was loose and sometimes came open while accelerating: in that race the hood came up during each of those slowdowns too, so the game actually knows about it so the physics engine can do it's magic to let the hood come up.
In a normal 'framedrop' related slowdown, nothing happens to the physics of the car in the game, you just get a lot less updates, but here there actually happens something in the game.
Very weird!
I also see the slowdowns in the replays, though I haven't checked if they happen at exactly the same time is I was driving. I also haven't checked whether the AI cars expereince the same.
Can it have anything to do with replacing the videocard after the game was installed?
It doesn't happen in other games (RBR e.g.).

I had this problem only on american tracks and a new driver helped my mobile 8600M GT. So try to update your drivers first. If this doesn't work, check your temp with a tool like gpu-z. I am having an issue that my gpu is getting too hot and I receive slowdowns, but they are different from yours.

I think I found the problem: it was a feature of my ASUS motherboard: AI-NOS which automatically overclocks your CPU when under heavy load. Apparently Grid doesn't like variable clockspeed for some reason...
Disabling the feature made the problem disappear, so I'm a happy racer once more!

It's not a bug, it's a feature!

A friend of mine had the exact same problem. He had the ASUS P5Q which also allows underclocking under low load (although it's no longer called AI NOS, but something else, now) which caused the same weird slowdowns. Disabling it resolved the problem, so Grid definitely can't handle variable clockspeeds!

And here's the friend: ;)
Although different hardware here, I had the exact same issue... occasional slow-motion graphics during race for about 1 second, but everything else still going on at full-speed, so you often found yourself in a wall once the glitch went away (it takes a fraction of a second to misjudge braking)
50+ framerates and reasonable CPU margin at the time these glitches occur.
Based on Jeroens findings and his suggestion to variable clockspeeds, I found out that on my Asus P5Q board - with E8400 CPU - , I had to disable these 2 things in the CPU Config section:
* "C1E Instruction" support (Enhanced halt state)
* "SpeedStep (TM)" support
These 2 options effectively let the clockspeed vary in function of the load. In idle the CPU runs at 2GHz, where it's normal clockspeed is 3GHz. I'm guessing for some reason this also occurs during the game...
Grid is the only game so fat that I saw this issue with!
Sticky anyone ?

Oh men,
Stupid me! That's the solution indeed!
I changed the 'optimize energy settings' to 'Highest Performance' and no slow downs anymore!
I can even switch my graphical settings higher again... :)

i have the same issue (slowdowns), and the same motherboard (Asus p5Q) but the solution unfotunately doesn't work.. New patch please, i hate this game with slowdowns, it's unplayable.

Used to be Awesome ASUS and now ASUKS.
I even changed my motherboard back to my not very OCable Foxconn just because it gives me no troubles with games.

I found a solution for my GRID freeze problems. It was RAM issue.
I released memory timings and problem gone... No freeze! Its probably memory overheating. Kingston sucks - OCZ with heatpipe on the way...
When want to use DDR2 (4 x 1GB) at stock setting 1066 CL 5-5-5-15 or 800 CL 4-4-4-15 with 2.2V GRID has pauses after while of playing. Now I set 800 CL 5-5-5-15 ant volatage to auto game runs smooth.
I hope that show you way to resolve your problems!

I was getting this error as well, and enormously frustating it was too. I upgraded my PC to a Phenom 9950 and Asus M3A78 mobo with 4Gb of OCZ RAM and found I'd have been better of staying with my old AMD 4600+ and Gigabyte mobo! I kept the 512mb Gefore9800GTX in both PC's, figuring it was still ok for pretty much any current game.
However, in my case it was definitely caused by the automatic overclocking feature on the Asus mobo. I made sure all my drivers were up to date- no change. I scaled back the detail- no change. I did some research and underclocked my RAM- no change. I changed all the 'power saving' options I could find in my bios, including C1E- no change.
I was at my wits end- even more so when I installed DiRT and found that did the same! But then I solved it. In the BIOS my CPU overclocking was set to auto, which I had assumed meant 'off', but of course it didn't, it meant it was automatically overclocking under heavy load. There wasn't actually a setting for 'off', (!), so I changed to the overclock profile 2%, figuring that as AMD's run pretty cool anyway and I have a big case with a couple of fans 2% OC'd shouldn't raise the temp much and I wanted rid of that auto setting.
Bingo! No more slowdown / speedups in either DiRT or Grid!
So in my case at least, this issue was 100% caused by the CPU clock speed changing automatically when under heavy load.

Hello friends,
I have an ASUS P5QC motherboard and I was also experiencing the problems described in this thread. Some posts helped me to solve the problem so I'm going to share what worked for me.
I've tried disabling the "CIE Instruction" and "SpeedStep" in the BIOS as suggested by a post without any results. Then tried setting the "AiOverclockTunner" to "Manual" instead of "Auto" in "AiTweaker" session in BIOS and it SOLVED the problem. I also figured it out that using the Ai Booster software from ASUS and using the "Performance" preset also works as it also change the "AiOverclockTunner" to a custom configuration.
These actions disabled the EPU-6 Engine software, then I had an insight. Before running the game I always set the EPU-6 Engine mode to "Turbo" and that seemed to be the problem! I reset the "AiOverclockTunner" to "AUTO" and then I let the EPU-6 mode at "High Performance" (the airplane) and voilą! Problem solved again! :cuss::bw::clap:
Even though both ways described above work fine, I had the impression that using AI Booster to activate the "Performance" mode can produce better performance. Maybe someone can measure this somehow.
To sum up it up:
DON'T ACTIVATE THE EPU-6 TURBO MODE BEFORE PLAYING!

Ughh...I have the same problem, but have a DELL mobo so I don't have access to any of these features...
Occasionally the problem would go away without me doing anything. IS there a permanent fix for me?

Might give Dell tech support a call, tell them about the problem and possible fix and see if they will tell you how to get into a Dell BIOS.

Hi. I've been playing since 2008 on my Q9300 pc and was very happy with the game: really good graphics and smooth. But i had to format a week ago and reinstall everything, and now i can`t play anymore.
The race pauses, by little steps, as described above. As i was playing in a Pentium III !!! I can`t even complete a race! I don't know what could happened because is the same PC, same configuration , same OS...
I installed new video and sound drivers but doesn't worked. Installed old drivers and nothing... Got down graphic resolution... nothing...
Can anybody help me?

This sounds like the setting for you graphics aperture is to small in the BIOS.
Go into the BIOS setup, aperture setting is normally in ADVANCED CHIPSET look for either graphics aperture or AGP aperture or PCIe Aperture and set to at least 128M. Try that if that does not work then you may have a faulty GPU.

ok, i donno if the problem i am having is the same or not. and im not sure if it was present before i updated to 1.2v BUT.
i notice a weird slowdown problem sometimes usually if im braking. but it ONLY happends if i have the hoodview selected. if i use any other cam, including bumpercam the game is 100% smooth. with the hood its unplayable. dirt runs fine with all cams, tho thats probably moot
im using an asus M2NSLI delux with a AMD 6000+ processor, 4Gb ddr800 with cas 4 latency. a X-fi platnium, EVGA GTX260 and windows 7 64 RC.
i did disable amd's cool and quiet "underclocking" which seems to have no effect in my case.
anywho, obviously since i just switch to bumper cam and the game is fine i dont really have a problem, but i thought id throw my findings in.

This exact problem happens to me after a few races in, so I suspect it's some sort of overhearting/hardware problem. EXCEPT I own a laptop, a Aspire 5920G with Vista SP2. Does windows 7 alleviate this problem, does anyone know O_O? Any solutions for people without overclockable BIOS/motherboards?

Hi, I have a Sager NP8660 laptop and have the same issue.
This game plays normal, but then it slows down all of a sudden, like it is loading something. My car and AI cars both slow down, the whole game slows down. This wouldn't be so bad but once the slowdown stops the game plays at 2-5 times the normal speed for a fraction of a second. It makes this game unplayable on most tracks. Here is what I have tried playing with:
Resolution: 1920 X 1200, all setting on high -- Happens frequently.
Res: 1080 X 786, all setting on med -- happens less, but multiple times a lap.
Res: 800 X 600, all setting on low -- still happens, but less frequently, only on certain parts of tracks.
// Edit: The game plays smoothly on all setting outside of these slowdowns.
It seems to me that this is a loading issue, like the game can not load things properly, thus it slows down. But then there is this odd issue like the game must keep up with itself so it speeds everything up. I am quite disappointed to see that these questions go back over a year and the problem is still here. I also think it is odd that this thread is pinned and the answer in here is overclock your ram, underclock your bois/cpu, overclock your cpu, update your drivers, revert your drivers back to earlier version... etc.
// Edit: I have the most up to date drivers for my computer. Windows Vista X64 w/ 4 GB of Ram, 512MB mem on my GPU
Would be nice to see a mod post something like: "There is no solution to this, this game is unsupported." Then people who come here to get solutions will not waste there time like I have.
Oh, great game outside of this, I wouldn't bother to try and find fix it if this were a lesser game. I just can't understand the lack of support companies give to their games. I mean why would I ever buy a game if the older games by the same company are still flawed.

Hmm that sound like what happens GRID on my computer when the smoke or sand is flying. Game will slow down for a second or two and then go into wrap second for few seconds.
I found a fix for this, it was to lower the Particles setting from Ultra to High. My old 8800 had troubles with the smoke and sand if Particles was set to high.
I was using 1024x768, 2xAA and Ultra settings, except Particles set to High with no slowdowns online when the smoke is flying in a derby race with my old 8800 GTS video card.
Now with my new ATI 4870 ( in reviews the 4870 got better FPS with GRID than a Nvdia 260 ), I use 1280x1024, 4xAA and Ultra settings, except Particles set to High. Offline I could run 1600x1200, but online I think GRID run a tad slow. I think I feel it in the handling of the cars online.

I'm also having these very annoying slowdowns. Most of you have ASUS mobos, but mine is from Gigabyte. I'll tro to find any CPU auto-speed settings and switch them all off and let you all know if it worked.
I also occasionally have a crash in the menus, e.g. when pressing Esc while scrolling the sponsor slections window.
And using ALT+TAB in Windows 7 is a guaranteed crash. Not very pleasing when you get a popup from a program running in the background just after finishing a race in 1st place (just happened to me today). This might also be a Win7 bug though...

Hi again,
I only disabled the Intel Turbo Boost setting in BIOS and haven't had any slowdowns in 5 races. I didn't disable any other "auto-performance" settings.
So it seems to have done the trick :-).
Thank you all for this topic, without it I wouldn't have found it!

Hey man the Alt+Tab is definitely not windows 7 I'm running windows 7 64bit MSDN and I installed GTA IV while playing GRID and it kept minimizing with popups and me pressing Alt+Tab no problems at all.
Although RC is still pre-release so it may still have some bugs over the final version.

Hi,
I'm using the 1.2 Patch, and I had been running the game 'fine' on my GeForce 7600GS at the lowest settings.
This describes my problem very well, only for me, it only happens about 2 to 3 times a day.. But I'm using a EVGA X58 E760 CLASSIFIED Motherboard. It increases the multiplier by 1 automatically to give the CPU a slight overclock by default. What do you guys think?

Disable turbo on the i7's and just OC it to 4-4.2ghz you wil get much better results in grid as it doesnt like multiple clock speeds.
