First to Codemasters my appoligies , the trouble i and other UPC customers are having connection to your online is being caused on the UPC network
How i came to this conclusion is that i borrowed an 02 moblie broadband modem(usb) from a mate and disabled my network cards and played for 3 hours straight with instant login and no dissconnects last night
but as soon as i tried with my cable modem disconnects back again
i swapped between the 2 configuration for 2 hours and always the same
UPC dissconnects and 02 ran perfectly
played in the clean install under the tag DAVEURUS
to those i raced ,had a great time
look forward to this issue being fixed with upc so i can do some more
upc tech support can be reached at (email address removed by request no offence meant could upc members having problems contact upc) with their account no and state they are also having problems
would appreciate any other upc members emailing them for this problem to be fixed

indeed - UPC has famously bad peering, and does not care if that causes problems for clients.

Hi there, yet another UPC customer with GRID online problems.
Just talked to UPC and the tech support, seems the P2P is the problem and is also affecting UK Virgin customers who are ported through Holland.
They don't seem to have a solution f*****s.
The only game i want to play online, WAS with Magnet and no problems..bloody typical!!!.
They said they would ring back if they had any more info and i will pass it on if of any use. Anyone else have any luck?

Ok..GRID is not P2P as UPC says it's live online so there should not be a problem.
Talked again to the tech at upc and did the usual ****...opened port 3074 etc etc and still nothing so i ripped out the Netgear router they provided and hooked up my Buffalo N router. Port forwarded the 3074 and now i can log in get into a race but as soon as the race is about to start it drops the connection, dumped the firewall on router and PC (eeeeh:( scarry..! ) but gave it a go ,still no luck. So it is still from their end as Magnet connects perfectly ( oh the temptation of a 20 meg line ,something had to be too good to be true) Tech was to ring me @5.20 pm but as usual no call.
It has to be a blocked port in the Holland loop or a UPC / Virgin firewall block in Amsterdam. Hell knows!! i'm ****ed off anyway, will ring the F*****s again tomorrow on their "'premium rate number"' CHICHHHING for them if everyoneon UPC rings them...alas i am weary..will post again tomo.

I know I read somewhere that Grid *does* use peer-to-peer (P2P) networking. I know Grid uses DemonWare netcode (see Grid PC manual backcover). I suspect (but don't know for certain) Grid includes the P2P Framework component of DemonWare's State Engine (http://www.demonware.net/prodse.html (http://www.demonware.net/prodse.html)) for the multiplayer racing, and probably DemonWare's Matchmaking+ netcode (http://www.demonware.net/prodmm.html (http://www.demonware.net/prodmm.html)) for the multiplayer racing lobby functions.
At any rate, I hope you UPC users get your problems resolved so you can get online with we GRIDders!
Somewhat off-topic but perhaps related: I am on Comcast cable (internet, TV and VOIP phone) in the US. After 1+ year-long hearings and deliberations the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recently issued an Enforcement order against Comcast (on a 3-2 vote, however UNfortunately levied no monetary fine) for intentionally blocking or throttling P2P internet traffic. Multiple independent tests by plaintiffs (citizens, and corporations) proved Comcast was interferring with P2P transmissions. Comcast claimed they were forced to "manage traffic" and implemented "traffic shaping systems", claimed due to abuse by file-sharers and BitTorrent users, in order to "provide the good customer experience" Comcast subscribers expect. In part (I know first-hand from my limited linux experience), Comcast was injecting false NoAck packets to interfere w/ P2P. Personally (on Windows and Linux), I've always been able to download files via P2P on WinXP & Linux (I only d/l'd legitimate Linux iso files and large game patches for ET:Quake Wars, etc.), BUT I was not able to upload/ seed anything via P2P (even tried using non-standard ports and rejecting NoAckss to no avail) . The FCC ordered Comcast to stop their traffic management/ shaping practices NLT end of 2008. I think the "Net Neutrality" groundswell initiatives in the US helped push the FCC to their Enforcement decision. Comcast said they will comply, even though their lawyers maintain the FCC decision is beyond FCC's Regulations. You can Google to find lots of stuff on FCC/Comcast dispute if you're interested.

Thanks bmaytum,
this is where the problem lies, UPC Ireland (and i think Virgin UK as both are owned by upc) do not allow P2P so many games like Call of Duty 4, GRID and plenty more that are in the pipeline will not have online play unless they sort it out. Talked to them AGAIN today and as usual they will be passing it on to an Admin who will probably wipe his arse with it and go back to playing Mario on his PS1.
I told UPC that if it's not sorted in a week they could stick their broadband and i'll stick to Magnet networks.
If anyone else on UPC Ireland is reading this please contact them , the more complaints we throw at them the better and maybe get Mario off his PS1 and doing his F'n job for a change.
Good Luck

@TriPped:
Interesting you should mention UPC not allowing Call of Duty 4 (and GRID in your case). If you look at the DemonWare links I provided above (13Aug08 post #6), you'll see DemonWare IS also used in COD4. And DemonWare notes their netcode in COD4 is far superior to others' netcode products used in extremely popular first-person shooter games.
I don't play COD4, but I think GRID's netcode (provided by DemonWare) is great: I see very little lag, competitor warping, flickering on/off or leaping about in GRID. And I really like that the race session will transfer to another player when the session originator quits, hence the racing can continue unabated (I've seen sessions reported with run times > 6 hours, nice! Even though I know indidual racers have joined and later left the session).
So back ON topic, I still hope you GRIDders on UPC can get them sorted out so you can join the multiplayer racing fun.

Thanks bmaytum, i hope so to! Yeah blocking DemonWare is a serious mistake for this internet provider, plenty of games out there using it and plenty more to come. No point in a 20 Meg line for just surfing the net!
