I will be playing the game for only about half an hour and it will decide to crash and give me an error report out of nowhere. I even get smooth fps when this occurs. I suspect my graphics cards don't have enough ram to play at high resolutions.

Looking at your dxdiag, I would say yes. Although its a good card, unless you have a couple of 9800s you will find it hard to play the game with high graphics at that kind of resolution.
You might also want to look at your sound card drivers, which are really out of date. And, you need to get the latest service pack for XP.

Will updating the service pack for XP stop the error I get about grid.exe had to shut down when I exit the game?

After I installed patch 1.2 I had stuttering video problems. So what I did was uninstall GRID, updated my OS to the current service pack, reinstalled GRID, installed patch 1.2, and then made my final video adjustments, then shut down and restarted my PC after everthing was done.
XP/Vista (current service packs) and drivers should be updated << very important
This fixed everything for me. I hope it works for you.

I seem to have been able to get GRID working for more than 30 minutes. :) I rolled back my sound drivers to the October '06 Audigy driver. I played for about 3 hours and it was the first time ever that I actaully went into the main menu to hit exit. Ill let you know when it crashes though.

Never mind.. The game plays longer now without crashing. It plays for about an hour before crashing instead of half an hour. Something is still very fishy. Maybe i should try my onboard audio card, a SoundMax.

Allright. Seems to be fixed completely. :) Grid did not like my processor being overclocked for some reason. no more crashes. Fun time.
