Hi all!

First i must give my congrats to GRID'sTEam. This is very nice Game for Pc -Game.

Now i have a very Big Problem. I Have a PciE VGA Card HD3850 whit 256MB of Vram. Intel E2200@3.4ghz and 2024 DDR2 800mhz under Vista 32.

The Game "Grid Demo" start at 640 x 480 and if i set the resolution i can't choise the 1680 x 1050.

Ok i have Read The "Helper file" but this is a Bad choise for all 256Mb VGA User.

I Have Play alot of Game whit this Card whitout problem [.ndr] At Medium/High Quality.

Please can't leave this Limit ? If you can't leave i have to play max 1280x1024 on 22' 1680x1050 and the Quality is very poor.

Sorry for my English But i'm Italian .

Thanks Alot !

I Have try to Edit config file but nothing...

Hi, Try editing the hardware_settings_config.xml file in your "My Docs" folder and manually put that resolution in it. It should work!

Edit: I should read properly, you already tried that....... hmmm. No idea then

This is due to your cards limited memory; the larger the screen resolution, the more memory is required by your graphics card. Add to that the texture and shader memory requirements and your card obviously cannot run this game at the resolution you would like. For any given resolution, a card requires a minimum amount of memory available to draw each frame, if that memory is not available, then no amount of disk swapping or tweaking is going to help, as the card simply cannot draw the scene.

There are a couple of things you can try, disable anti aliasing in catalyst control centre as this causes a huge increase in the memory required for a given resolution, you should also set the mip map quality level to performance as this will free up memory too, and disable anisotropic filtering. If you still cannot get it to run then there is nothing else you can do.

I have to say that 256mb is too small for modern high-resolution displays on a pc expecting to play modern games. “Grids” graphics are truly next gen, surpassing any driving game yet seen on the platform by a wide margin, I would suspect even 512mb cards are close to the limit at the highest resolutions available with all the eye candy set at max. Ultimately, there is nothing you can do except accept the limitations of your graphics card, or purchase one with more memory.

From one of our graphics programmers:

GRID is a very graphically intensive game and uses a lot of VRAM. For this reason, there is a limit on the maximum resolution you can run in if you have a card with very little video memory (eg 256Mb).

If you look in your game directory for system/hardware_settings_restrictions.xml you should see a tag at the bottom of the file called "res". If you delete this line you should be able to run at all the resolutions your graphics card supports. Just be wary that running at high resolutions with high levels of multisampling might cause your game not to run properly.

In your case, you shouldn't experience any problems running at 1650 x 1050 with 2xmsaa.

Hi,

I have same problem as Matrice..

But, I fixed system/hardware_settings_restrictions.xml how you say, but still doesnt work. Any idea? I have to change another file?

toMatrice: how you fix it?

Well this also worked for me just fine. Now I can run 1680X1050 on my old P4 3.3 @ 3.3 and a 7800GS with only 256M ram. I would think limiting Resolutions is not the best way to go about it. The game looks okish at 1024X768 with everything maxed out, (and it runs ok too) but it looks like ass compaired to running at my native res with some stuff turned down. If the game cant run at the native res then the whole experiance is ruined especialy with a widescreen monitor. Plus I feel too confined at thoes lower reses.

Now to get things to speed up a little, i remember seeing something about HDR. if that is running in this game is there any way to disable it? I know it looks pretty and all but since I do have an older graphics card and processor, HDR is more of a hinderane then beneficial eye candy untill I get myself an upgrade.

I cannot wait to build a new system to run this game and a few others I cant currently enjoy on here.

ati hd cards have a more effective memory controller than geforces. an ati card with 256 mb vram can actually outperform a geforce 8 with 512 mb vram

You can disable HDR. In the \My Documents\Codemasters\GRID Demo\hardwaresettings folder there is a file called hardware settings config.xml, open with Wordpad/notepad, and
find the line that says <postprocess enabled="true" blur="true" />, and change it to false for both if you wanna get rid of HDR and motion blur....

Also, i think that 1680x1050 with your card and processor is overkill; if you really must reduce the res to below native, try 1440x900 or even 1280x800, both are 16:10 ARs which fit your monitor perfectly.. if those reses are not in the game options, you can add it via the Nvidia control panel, add custom resolutions in the Screen Resolutions and Refresh Rates tab...

Even having marginally superior specs to yours (i've a core2duo T7200 and a 7950 GTX GO 512MB card), i run the game at only 1280x800 so that i can play it with eveything on, and the game still looks bloody brilliant thanks to the flawless upscaling of my laptop monitor....
