When Im playing the game after about a lap the whole game and computer will lock up. I purchased d.i.r.t a little over a year ago and have never been able to play it for this same problem. On Grid when in spectator mode it wont do this its just when racing.

Same thing happens to me. On default settings, I get about as far as pulling off the start line before it hangs on a static image, with no error and the sound continues. Have to then end process to close. It even hung in the menu when I was changing controls once.
I tried turning down the anti-aliasing settings and actually got through a race too, but on the second race it crashed again.
Specs:
Core2 Duo E6600
2Gb Crucial Ballistix PC6400
Geforce 8800GTX
Windows XP Pro SP2
Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer
Tried installing new GFX/SFX drivers to no avail. It also doesn't hang in this way for any other game I've tried recently (including Supreme Commander: FA, Trackmania United Forever, CS:S, GTA: San Andreas, Age of Conan beta etc.)

I have that hard-lock issue on loading, and in races.
I think it's something to do with the Nvidia cards. I had no issues with the X1950, but when I installed the 8800GT DiRT started this crap, and it continues with Grid. Of course then you see vids of them running perfectly on them, so bah.

Yea like i said i been unable to play dirt for over a year now and looks as though this game will be useless me as well. I also tried a new hard drive and new memory and still didn't solve the problem. I tried installing XP Service Pack 3 yesterday to see if it helped and still nothing. Then i installed a fresh copy of windows wit no other programs installed and yet still it crashed.... I don't know whats going on. I remember back in the day "star wars battlefront 2" had a nvidia problem also and they fixed it with a patch. How ever most people have nvidia cards and play the game fine so im not sure its nvidia doing this.

Trying to find similarities in our systems.
I have:
Cpu: Intel E6550 (Duo)
Mobo: Asus A5N-E SLI
Memory: 2gb OCZ 6400
Video: 8800GT 512mb
Audio: Sound Blaster Audigy 2
Windows: XP SP2
So far we have nothing that matches up except our cards are Nvidia.

It seems that I am not the lonely one :(
I got the same issue on my pc, interestingly the same problem happened to DIRT a year go.. =..=
When i was in the game for around 5 mins, (sometimes even shorter). the game seemed to be locked. It stopped at static pic, sound continued. And the machines has not hung yet. I could still use Task Manager to terminate the thread of GRID or switch between programs.
My Spec.
Q6600 OC 3.24G
Asus P5E-X38
2G Cossair Ram
8800GT 512MB OC 700/1850/1000 (Driver 174.74)
Vista SP1
I can't see the problem is due to overclock. cuz i can successfully run COD4, Assassin's Creed, NFS ProSt, Crysis, etc, using the same OC status (sometimes set the graphic card fan to run at 100%)
And I don't think within 3 mins, the CPU and graphic card would both overheated. cuz I was confirmed by Everest that when GRID was locked up, CPU temp was 40 and graphic card temp. was 55. I could play Assassin's Creed for more than 2hrs under OC status without any issue.
I hope the administrator of this forum could read this thread and report this to the game developer.
Cheers

Its not overclock because Ive already played with that issue and its not overheat because Ive put box fans and everything else next to my computer to make sure it wasn't getting hot. Because i am a computer tech i also know that a faulty hard drive or memory can cause this so i have tried to change them as well but the game will still crash.

Remove your control pad - see if that helps and install the very latest Nvidia beta drivers.

With yours Jerico, I think it could be the graphics card. The 6800 GS is a stripped down version of the GT/X ranges - and in most cases, the bits taken out, are the important ones.
If possible, try it on a different PC or a different card. I would also get the new Nvidia beta drivers to see if they help

I think you should update your sound drivers and try the new Nvidia beta drivers.
As for the others, if your sound card is on board, disable it to see if the game works

I'm using the latest Nvidia beta drivers and latest Creative X-Fi drivers. I do have on-board sound but it's disabled via the bios. My control pad is a PS2 pad through a Super Dualbox Pro - I'll try disconnecting it and see how that goes.
I'll post up a DXDiag once I get home later.

Have tried the beta drivers, same problem...
also the audio drivers haven't been updated in ages because the Audigy 2 hasn't been... the latest XP driver pack for it is just a re-pack bundled with the XFI drivers and other newer cards. The last "new" Audigy 2 drivers were from something like 2005
Also disabling/enabling the onboard has made no difference.
I'd be glad to just use the onboard except it's 5.1 and my speakers are 7.1 so it sort of cuts off the woofer.

CHEERS!!!!!!!!!MATE!!!
IT IS WORKING NOW. AMAZING !!!
I disconnected my control pad which is a PS2 pad through a Super Dualbox Pro (USB).
Now everything is working perfectly. I am using my XBox 360 wireless controller to play. Force feedback is terrific.
Thanks heaps, jigglybean
I am definitely anticipating the final release of Grid.
So I would sugguest any dude using the PS2 pad connecting through USB converter should disconnect the converter before start the game to avoid the game locked up issue. My Symantec anti-virus program is enabled while i am playin. there is no issue keeping it on.
I will try Dirt tonite. heh.

Im about to install some Asus known compatible memory and swap out my OCZ memory... since some of the crashes result in an IRQ_LESS_THAN_EQUAL error.
We'll see if it does anything, but I doubt it will. Since the computer runs everything but Grid and DiRT great, without hard locking every 4 seconds.... or at all for that matter.

Now with 3 Gigs of Mushkin, and wow crashes still, amazing. All audio enabled or disabled, still crashes. Otherwise the only change has been the ATI to the Nvidia. ****ing balls.

I've played the PC demo a couple times successfully but there was always something weird going on in one way or another. The first time I played it the game closed itself after my first race. Maybe the second or third time I played it I was in a race and then the sky went totally insane. It wasn't blue, instead it was like there was building model stretched over the sky but there were lines and things everywhere and the whole thing was warping around. It was really weird. The next time I tried playing it I selected a race and after it loaded the screen flickered between black and a dark grey. I could hear engine sounds but nothing showed up. I couldn't exit the game or minimize it, but fortunately it was kind enough to close itself after about a minute.
Overall I think something is seriously wrong somewhere.
