Newbie alert!
"Nuke button"? Auto-attack? I never seem to use it. Is it a toggle?
My usual routine (lvl10, elf) is Trap, right-click on target, Quickshot, Barbed, Swift, Penetrate (if it's working), a frantic tap on any button that shoots something and then Blindside and melee stuff. (I very rarely manage a kill with ranged attacks alone.)

"Nuke button" = Heart seeker, lvl 50 skill.
Auto-attack = the attacks your toons does without you pressing any buttons. The standard shortkey to start it is "˝"
(I very rarely manage a kill with ranged attacks alone.)
What!?? Normal mobs on your level or below you should be able to down before they reach you! Try this for 1 on 1 fights:
- Find the right distance, where the mobs is just within range.
- Gather focus
- optional: Lay trap if you like
- Quick shot (to slow your target)
- Penetrating shot
- Swift bow
- Penetrating shot
- Barbed arrow or Quick shot
If the target isn't dead by now a scourging blow and a swift stroke ussually puts him down.
I'm not sure, but I think you have all these skill at level 10.
If you have two mobs standing together, allways use a trap. The trap will allways catch the one you are not shooting, because he is not slowed by Quick shot and will reach the trap first. Leave him til the first mob is down.
Good luck and happy hunting :)

This only works in strength stance! Other stances won't slow mobs with quick shot.

If you're using traps, be sure to kill any ranged critters first as they'll never touch the trap, where as their melee buddy will.

my gf who has a lvl 20 loremaster with uber crowdcontrol if she can find the skill in the bar in time decided to try a hunter on her own ( other times i tank mobs with my lvl 19 uber-skinned loremaster and die all the time lol)
Well the results are not inpredictable , she agroed the half of the intro zone and jumped down the first cliff , impressive that im told she did survived.
Still i love to play with her since it's the most challenging gameplay for me , a loremaster breaking mezz , yes i don't even talk about bear getting the heal when i'm being ganked by 4 goblins :D
Nonetheless she did saved my ass many times and imorving her gameplay ( her first mmorpg) i can teach her how to play a hunter but i'm afraid it may cost a coule thousand brain cell loss in the process , nah she deserves it :P

For some reason it fails to snare half of the time for me even with strength stance

yes, with the low probability of snaring and the loss of focus without precision stance I don't tend to follow that route.
I'd would normally start out with a swift bow (longest induction time) followed by barbed arrow to slow the mob down. At this point an auto-attack usually fires. Then a penetrating shot, if they are still not down the next auto-attack should drop them, providing the bow is half decent.
I don't think I had any trouble downing mobs from range up until lvl 15 or so.
I sent this on my iPhone, which is also cool :-P
