To get a exciting championship, the other drivers should be strong like in the reality. Some drivers are strong only on tarmac (Panizzi) other only on gravel. There should be a lot of personal characteristics for every driver.
That could be:

speed on tarmac
speed on gravel
speed on snow
speed in the darkness
take risk - a driver who takes a lot of risk is fast but he has often a retirement
consistency (mistakes) - high consistency the driver often finish
driving style - a driver with a hard style has often a technical problem
jumps - win or lose the driver time by jumps
hairpins - win or lose the driver time in hairpins
technical understanding - a driver without a technical understanding has sometimes problems with the car setup

Maybe other members have also some suggestions. Each difference of the drivers make the championship more interesting. So it will be able to get more different results. In CMR2 always the same two or three drivers was very strong.

Great idea!

fully customizable characters could be done.

For example, if I create myself as driver, I could choose my abilities and skills.

A driver editor like in the PS2 football game "Pro Evolution Soccer" from Konami. This editor is great. You can edit all conceivable things. So you can edit all the drivers in the game. Would be needed for PS2, because there are no real driver names. :( :( :(

Yeah, this is a good idea and points to a general problem with CMR2 - the lack of a high-level "Championship" perspective... Basically, this idea won't fly unless you allow players to race an entire championship from front to back... Only then does having top-driver retirements make sense.

Also points out to the disconnectedness of the rest of the drivers... They're just times, there's no drama - no big offs, no retirements.

This, of course, is a hardcore sim feature.
