on Seeph FM this week:
Radiohead - lots and lots of lovely live stuff
The Holloways
Spinto Band - Nice & Nicely Done
BRMC - Howl (how did I miss out on this when it first came out? Absolutely brilliant)
Rosemary - got their three EPs last week, promising even if a bit too much of it deviates towards The Levellers
on the Gnarls Barkley thing, very fresh sound, I like it. Its Danger Mouse behind it isn't it? Of Grey Album notoriety?
also look out for these - www.myspace.com/theansweringmachine. terrible band name, but decent tunes

Eagles - The Complete Greatest Hits
Bought this after watching the concert on BBC a few weeks back.
A good collection of classic rock 'n' roll, with the legendary 'Hotel California' - which is just one of those songs that you could play time after time and not get bored of it.
Must admit that, bar the odd one or two songs, I hadn't really heard a lot of the Eagles before, but I'm rather pleased with my new purchase.

Indeed. The Jam were brill ... which is more than can be said about Weller since then!!!
New purchases include:
Forward Russia! - Not sure about this I must admit. It sounds a bit samey and gimmicky (but Ive only listened to it a couple of times and I may be wrong)
Howling Bells - This is jaw droppingly brilliant. Very reminiscent of The Throwing Muses ...

I love Supermassive Black Hole. Originally I had dismissed it, stereotypical Brit; I don't like changes, new directions. It's completely different to just about anything they've done, so, like I said, I disliked it at first. But then I started to listen to it, and it grew on me. Great song.
Hoping the album will be fantastic as well.

In other news, I've gone very jazzy recently. Miles Davis, John Lee Hooker, and various other jazz musicians have made their way into my iTunes playlist. So, by the way, have Gogol Bordello, the Pipettes (<3<3), and the Pigeon Detectives. So have some more bands and artists, but I won't mention them, for shame of not having added them sooner.

Blimey - moved into the freeform jazz talk now.
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue is the classic along with Birth of Cool - I prefer Birth of Cool.
John Coltrane - then it's Blue Train - great album as well.
Really need to get some more as my jazz knowledge is pretty woeful TBH. Know the basic players, but not which albums are the best, which are revered, that kind of thing.
Today I have mostly listened to the Great Lake Swimmers, their second album. They're an American band, very laid back, relaxing indie stuff. They record their albums in strange places - the first was in a grain silo, the second in a church.

I made a thrwad on this in another forum but I can be botherd making another so i'll post it here, anyone else can post theres, its just a classic whats your top ten albums of all time if you can do one, Its really hard but Ive got mine
1) Metallica - Master Of Puppets(1986) - By far the best sound of any sort to grace my ears, unbeliveable album, has the varition spot on and the perfected the art of metal ballads.
2)Christina Aguilera - Stripped(2002) - Anyone who has picked up on my music taste must think what the hell, but its true shes was of my idols her voice his something else and this is her first album that showcases her endless abilties her voice has.
3)Pantera - Cowboys from Hell (1990) - The birth of the good side of 90s metal, unfortunatly Nirvarna manged to influance upcoming bands in the 90s and when that happens the qaulity will suffer. However Pantera formed back in 1983 were obvouisly not influanced by Nirvana but more James Dio, Iron Maiden, and the rest of the new wave of brittish metal.
There first album were ditched there old 80s haor metal style and went more aggressive and raw and made the genre Groove metal over the years, Fine album.
4)James Dio - Holy Diver (1983) - This album shown how perfectly suited to hard rock /metal Dio's voice is
5)Nightwish - Centuary Child (2002) - Its just one of those albums were everything ties in perfect, Tara Turujens Voice, the many many instrumnets Nightwish use all came together to make this master piece
6)Metallica - Ride the Lightning (1984) - A little more raw than Master of puppets and not has well written, still about has good as metal music gets espcailly thr ballad Fade to black , the first metal song that was acoustic based
7) Judas Priest - Brittish Steel (1980) - Rob halfords HIGH HIGH pitched voice is well showcased and not over done like he does on Painkiller
8)Metallica - Kill Em All (1983) - Very Very raw and still has a studio type of unfinished sound, you can see on this album just how good the band were going to be
9)Opeth - Blackwater Park (2002) There most commercail effort and there best to date, the point were akerfeldt mastered Death metal vocals and clean vocals together
10) Death - Human (1990) Bands like cannibal corpse gave death metal a bad name, the genre is hugley misunderstood. Anyone remember Ace Ventura Pet Detective, well Cannibal corpse were the band on that, so that was the public picture of death metal, its actaully far more creative than that.
For a start the band DEATH, dont keep shouting swearwords and human disimboulment , they sing about politics, paranoria, drugs, other issues.
You just got to admire the speed this guys can play and the ryhtems and riffs they came out with on tihs album

Recently purchased "We are not the Infadels" by.... ironically, The Infidels. I like it. Similar to Kaiser Chiefs to some extent. You might recognise "Can't Get Enough" from Gran Turismo 4, and that's what prompted me to buy it. I found it was one of the less-good tracks on there, so certainly worth a look if you like that sort of thing.

Yeah mate I've got lots of Fratellies tracks on my ipod (and computer), I've been champoining them for quite a while now, at last someone else has realised that they are a great band !!
Creepin up the backstairs is a good choone, I personally think that there are some better ones, but Creepin sure makes you sit up and take notice of them

I'm Actaully listening to Slipknot, there latest album was a dramtic change in music which became more mature and more creative and showcased more varition in corey Talyors voice he can actaully sing at a decent standad, his death metal growls need more work as there like shouts though.
Anyway on this new album is the introduction of clean vocals and guitar riffs.....Is this slipknot ??? well yes a dramatic change for the better.
Songs like Vemillion parts 1 and to, Remember before I forget and Circle, and danger all feature clean clear vocals.
Its now turned out that slipknot have put together a very good Hard Rock/Metal album.
I got it for 3.99 from music zone a bargain

At the moment I'm trying to work out my top ten albums of all time - I know The Stone Roses will be in the top ten, probably number two behind Blood on the Tracks. But I tried going through my albums and deciding what else could go in there and in the end I picked 125 albums that I think are very worthy. So I've got lots of cutting down to do...

Didn't like Herbert's album too much. Something irritating about it - probably the hundreds of 'organic samples' made it too patchy for me. I'll give it a month or so then listen again, see if I've changed my mind.

Good (although it takes ages to get into)
Good (sound quality lets it down IMO - songs are great of course)
Good (lost my hearing in one ear to this album being played live)
Brilliant (not his best but it's still Bowie - prefer his later 70s albums nowadays - used to love this though, more than it's more-famous older brother Ziggy Stardust)

Just when I thought music was getting too boring, Jarvis Cocker returns. Thank God for that.
The first released tune from his debut solo album, 'Running the World' has been released on Myspace - http://myspace.com/jarvspace. (warning, very strong language). I hope it'll be released as a single ;)
Great song - obviously very Pulp-like, very angry lyrics, and worth a listen. But make sure you don't have the speaker volume turned up too much during the chorus if you listen. You have been warned! No apologies due if you're offended by the lyrics - listen at your own risk etc.
Off-topic, but I've met Jarvis twice - once he said hello when I went to a Pulp gig in 1993 where 35 people showed up (obviously before they were famous), and then in the Spar on Abbeydale Road in Sheffield when he needed to jump the queue as he had a taxi waiting outside. Very nice chap, great band, brilliant music.

Their new album is apparentley a lot slower. If its half as good as their debut album it will great though.

In the morning is dead catchy but they have a very very good album to follow up.
Meanwhile Ive been listening to:
Muse- Black Holes and Revelations - highly recommended as are both their previous lps. A big album in more ways than one (listen to it and you ll know what I mean), bombastic rock of the highest order.
Primal Scream- Riot City Blues - very close to being a comedy album but great fun.

I watched the Dark Side of the Moon programme.Very good album indeed. I prefer Piper at the Gates of Dawn though.
Just bringing back this post from February - Syd Barrett, the original writer/voalist/guitarist of Pink Floyd, died today - he was brilliant on the Piper at the Gates of Dawn album, before leaving the band and becoming a recluse.
And of course, the classic song 'Shine on you Crazy Diamond' is a tribute to his genius. RIP. :(

Hmmmmmm, dunno really, it doesn't float my boat at all. It's a little bit 'middle of the road' - but then again what would you expect from a self-titled album at the end of the day.
I've been listening to it for a couple of days now, trying my hardest to get to like it, but alas I can't.
I just cant get the image of bleedin Johnny Borrell out of my head throughout the whole album - I can't stand the smug little ****
I'll stick it on my ipod, but I'm sure that it'll soon get deleted to free up some additional space just like the first Razor****e album did.
Actually, I've just turned it off as I was again trying to 'like it', but I honestly think that I've got a phobia of Borrell - strange one that.

Going back to the Razorlight album this review is spot on:
Pop: New Releases: Razorlight - Razorlight
The worst album I’ve heard this year, in any genre: lyrically inept, musically lazy and trite, with shockingly poor production. The chasm between Johnny Borrell’s increasingly laughable bombast (“The best songwriter of my generation”; oh, stop it) and his work is as wide as an ocean here. In the Morning kicks things off, with its poor man’s Tom Petty/mid-1980s George Harrison sound. On track two, Borrell rolls out the lamest rhyme in songwriting, asking: “Who needs love? Who needs a heaven up above?” More to the point, who needs an album this excruciating? Tragically, with the usual cheerleaders already gushing superlatives, the answer is: many more people than you’d hope for.
1/10
Just to save any poor souls who are thinking of buying it, to save yourself a few quid, or at least give you a chance of getting something decent.

Its not good, but its not THAT bad!
In The Morning is a good song. Kirbys House is cheating a bit because it was already on the Help! A Day in the life of album. America is quite good as is Pop Song 2006 but the other arent very good.

You havent heard of the Libertines? Where have you been for the last few years?
The Libertines are probably one of the most influential bands of todays generation, and had Pete Doherty who is a massive junkie and went out with Kate Moss and gets extensive media coverage about his addicition. Pete also formed the band Babyshambles and Carl (and Gary) formed a band called Dirty Pretty Things.
Still nothing?
The Zutons are awesome, the first album is a lot better though

I've been listening to:
The Replacements, Herbie Hancock and R.E.M.
Which Herbie album you listening to? Headhunters?

Plus its only 10 songs long (and one of them is an old one). They do seem to have lost the 'buzz' that was evident in their first album. Its a lot slower and edging on depressing.
Was looking foward to it for ages, is a let down :(
Still listening to it, to see if I can get myself to like it
I thought it was "by no means bad"?
Now the cool musical kids have disagreed your opinion has changed?
That's No Way To Tell A Lie - James Dean Bradfield:) Great song imo:)

got the album? I'm leaning towards buying it, wondered what was like. As a massive manics fan growing up I'm always interested in new stuff and I like the single

Obviously I've heard "That's No Way To Tell A Lie" and I've also heard "Still a long way to go" and that is a good song too. Currently getting "An English Gentleman" off a friend so I can have a listen. But like I said I need to hear more before I can say wether the album is worth buying:)

They were here(Newcastle) at the Metro Radio, supporting Guns N' Roses. My mate went, said it pretty good. I don't really know how they can call it "Guns N' Roses" though, with only Axl Rose?
At the minute I'm listening to "Tears Don't Fall" by Bullet For My Valentine, bit heavier than what I would normally listen too, but I really like it.

The others members left Axl , and Dizzy Reed though , so they left the band for Axl to rebuild , which I think he's done quite well.
Wouldn't reallly be fair to take the name away from him aswell would it?

No I meant its not as bad as people have been saying, maybe I should have phased it different.
Their debut was so good that it was hard to follow up and people have called it dreadful because its not as good. I'm still undecided I've only listened to it three times, maybe I should listen to it more before I comment next time. :)

I know its fairly old now but I have got back into hard Fi. I know a lot of you guys don't rate them but I think the album is fantastic.

I respect your taste -perhaps more than anybody's on the forum- but I think you re a mite ott with your evaluation.
Yes it hasnt got the edge of their first, yes its too short ... but its listenable at the very least.
JDB's No way to tell a lie is great as is Say hello to the pope which I ve also heard. I love the manics and will be getting both his and Wire's album.

I find them to be the most bland and boring band in the world.
With lyrics that are shockingly bad.

The Razorlight album is certainly listenable - it's just disappointing. It's the Frank Lampard/Ronaldinho of this year's albums.
It's not bad in my opinion, just much less than what we all expected after such a cracking debut.
Today's albums so far - Zen Arcade by Husker Du, Dare by Human League and Music of the Spheres by Ian Brown. Probably try some more Cocteau Twins later as I'm seriously loving that band at the moment.
