My prediction was correct :)

Its amazing how the mainstream has aligned with quality as far as they are concerned!!!!

Btw there will be an article about the "best 100 british albums of all time" in this week's NME which should be interesting ...

Uncle mad has been listening to: Ryan Adams - Love is Hell, Ryan Adams - 29, Sigur Ros - Takk, the Madonna new album as well as The Smiths - The world wont listen from my collection

I found a website with about 10 White Stripes gigs on last week so went a bit mental listening to them lately. Every time they play it's a totally different set so really interesting for me, my last.fm profile has taken a bit of a battering though now with the Stripes well out in front!

Bright Eyes "Fevers and Mirrors" also acquired last week, blinding.

Q Magazine did a similar poll about 18 months ago - with Stone Roses coming top. Can't find the UK version of the list - so here's the same list from a Dutch site:
http://www.muzieklijstjes.nl/Observer100june2004.htm

If that NME best of has the Artic Monkeys in there at all, I'll scream. Way too early to be saying whether it's one of the best of all time yet. Even though they gave it 10/10.

That's what i don't like about the NME, they hype up bands when they have their debut album, and then slate them and throw them off their pedestal when the band goes in a different direction, musically or otherwise.

The Arctic Monkeys are good, but will they stand the test of time? I don't think they'll be around forever, but they are good as they are at the moment.

I get NME, although it does tick me off how bias they are to bands, but on the back page it had the advert for next weeks (or this weeks) one and the Arctic Monkeys album was on it.

So if it is actually on it that must be a record, out for 2 days (1 day if your in London) and its already in the Top 100 albums.

Its pathetic, theres some good songs, some of the tracks are distinctly average like The View From The Afternoon

I'll reserve judgement on the Arctic Monkeys until I've heard the full album, but I've not been at all impressed by either of their singles - don't like the lyrics or music and the vocals are pretty grating.
Is there anywhere free on the net to (legally) listen to any of their other tracks? I seemed to be the only person who didn't like Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor and t'other song (titles are too long ;)) but I'd like to be able to understand the hype...

Yeah - listened to the stream of it last night. 5/10 at the moment. Wasn't really impressed, especially because I hoped the biggest selling album of all time (or thereabouts) would actually be quite good.

Perhaps I'm getting old and it just didn't click with me, but I was disappointed.

Mardy Bum was pretty good (preferred the demo version though), the singles are good, and the last track wasn't too bad, but the rest didn't fill me with much enthusiasm.

Payday today so I finally can buy some albums - get the Godspeed album, along with Brian Eno, the Doors and an album by an US band called Eluvium (very Sigur Ros-like soundscapes). See, look at those choices. I am getting old.

In my great alphabetical album extravaganza I'm up to Fun Lovin Criminals, then the Futureheads. Powering through now - only 22 letters left to go!

You (and all the others in the thread) are of course correct about NME hyping bands but this has always been a feature of the british weekly press (Melody Maker was even worse) but I always take it with a pinch of salt and I d take NME's enthusiasm over the boring "maturity" of sludge like Q (still reviewing people like Sting with a straight face for f's sake!!!!), Mojo and the like any time.

It's brilliant that one isn't it, its from the same tour as the Blackpool Lights DVD is from I think so quite similar, although they can do a completely different set one night to the next, that's why I love them so much.

The manchester date they did on this tour looked an amazing set, it shat on the one I saw at Blackpool but Manc had sold out, was fairly gutted but still had a blast when I saw them

Glastonbury was something else entirely as well - you have to see them next time they're over definitely. Hopefully if they do any new stuff it'll be back to the guitary stuff though, I just cant get into GBMS like I have the others.

Also - someone mentioned it to me the other day, I never realised before, every album has a song title "Little" then something?

Voivod - I wasn't a fan but I had quite a few mates into that while I was in sixth form. Gwar, AC/DC, early Metallica etc etc. I was in that stuff for about ten minutes before turning indie ;)

Listened to my new purchases - Bruce Springsteen Live is great as expected, Eluvium is good but the first half of the album is very samey (two tracks are out this world though, if you like your 'ambient soundscapes'), Bright Eyes is great folk pop and Godspeed sounds brilliant at points (need to listen to it a few times I'll guess - same as usually happens with Sigur Ros).

However, starting to get into Josef K (early 80s Scottish band) over the weekend - excellent post-punk stuff, very similar to Joy Division and certainly an influence on Franz Ferdinand. I'll be listening to them more over the next few weeks and months I can confirm.

I know this is a thread for 'good songs/albums' but as it's titled 'What are you listening to' I think this is allowed.

Currently listening to The Streets. What a complete and utter load of tosh, absolute rubbish.

Mike Skinner, everyone claims to be a lyrical genious. His most poetic output involves rhyming words like "brandy or beer ... water's a good idea ... i wish that bar lady would appear ... come and serve over here"

It's the most abysmal head-in-ass sixth form poetry I've ever heard.

I disagree - I think it's absolute genius stuff. He talks about what he sees, he tells funny and interesting stories and lyrically and musically it's excellent. 'Dry Your Eyes' was way overplayed at the time, but that's not really his fault. Both albums are great - agreeing with Seeph, the first album was better though. Modern day Shakespeare in my opinion (The Streets, not Seeph!)

We've got another thread on The Streets somwhere - couldn't find it though. I remember at the time it was about 50/50 between love him or hate him. A real 'marmite' artist/band.

This week's purchases have been evaluated and the Richard Hawley album is a gem of a CD - great bluesy, folksy pop music - he's got a voice like Elvis I suppose, but much more relaxed. Certainly worth trying if you want something more laidback and, shiock horror for me, quite happy music.

Sigur Ros is Sigur Ros and I'd heard () loads of times - but just listening to it again after a couple of years away from it and boy, it's wonderful. Takk got number two in my best of 2005, this would easily get number one. It's a pity it was released in 2002 when it was beaten to number one in my poll of that year by Flaming Lips.

Saw Clap Your Hands Say Yeah the other night - certainy worth the eight quid entrance, very good live (if a bit quiet between songs - didn't interact much) and, interesting, the first song of the CYHSY album - which, if you've heard it, sounds completely bizarre - actually makes sense if you hear it live. Wonders will never cease.

Got the Go! Team gig on Thursday and can't wait for that - that'll be a barnstormer of a concert I hope.

Little Man Tate are very good, as are Harrisons and The Pidgeon Detectives.

Me and my mate were trying to decide who has the better music scene Leeds or Sheffield.

Its such a hard desicion in Sheffield you had Pulp and now theres Arctic Monkeys, Little Man Tate, Harrisons etc but in Leeds theres the whole Dance To The Radio scene, Kaiser Chiefs (who I dont like but are popular) and many more good bands.

Does anyone know where I can buy Bordello's "Gypsy punks" or AT's "crimson" in the UK? I can't seem to find them in any HMV or anywhere else.
Looking for Switchfoot- "Nothing is sound" if anyone can help out with that, it would also be much appreciated.

I want to know more about the Leeds scene (as I'm here) but I never get chance to go and see the local bands play. Anyone know of any good 'uns? Obviously Kaiser Chiefs - who else is coming out of Leeds like Milburn and Arctic Monkeys from Sheffield are?

iForward, russia! are a great band from Leeds, absolutely amazing and Whiska's (there guitarist) has a record label (Dance To The Radio).

Dance To The Radio have a compilation CD out soon

Linky (http://www.dancetotheradio.com/)
Myspace ( http://www.myspace.com/dancetotheradiolabel )

I need to get it myself, but its full of quality bands (Well I personally like them)

Some bands I know of though are...

iForward, russia!, The Pidgeon Detectives, The Sunshine Underground etc

EDIT: Heard today that Test Icicles are splitting up :( Disappointed they are a good band!

Also just got a few songs by Mystery Jets, The Young Knives, Belle and Sebastian, iForward,Russia! and The KBC

ok...dunno if I've mentioned these as I can't be bothered look back so...

Artist - Track

Embrace - Nature's law
Morning Runner - Burning Benches
The Rakes - 22 Grand Job
Orson - No Tomorrow
The Buzzcocks - Ever Fallen in Love (Thanks Stu)
Stereophonics - Dakota
U2 - Original of the species
U2 - City of Blinding Lights
OkGo! - A million ways

Haven't a clue why I like that song by the rakes as I think it's crap :D I'm confused. The video to 'A million ways' is great, but the song isn't bad too ;)

My faves on there have to be Embrace, Morning Runner and Orson. Quality.

They were okay, I guess. Speaking of the Sugababes cover, did you see when Arctic Monkeys collected the award for best song they all applauded it, but Andy had to add "Wrong key though" at the end. Quality.

I was pretty intriqued by Plan B at the awards aswell, rap over an acoustic guitar - gritty stuff aswell, interesting. Will keep an eye on him.

Found a band/artist called 'Maps' this evening (come out of Northampton apparently) - their debut single came out late last year, new single out this week.

After talking with our lawyer we've decided that unless a song or music track is officially available for free via the band's/artist's or label's website then we CAN NOT have any links to it on the forum.

So from now on can people NOT link to YouSendIt, MegaUpload and the like for the purpose of downloading and distributing tracks. Any of these links found on the forum will be deleted.

Quite a good album, although I must admit that with certain songs, I tend to find that her voice sounds somewhat like a child attempting to sing at times, and this seems to be reflected in the album artwork as well.

"Put Your Records On" is one of the highlights of the CD, and as a whole, it is a relaxing album that would be perfect for those late summer evenings, and with this thought in mind, perhaps, the album seems out of place, what with the current weather and all.
