View Full Version : What Are You Listening To?

Alot actaully, and that was more from a band sense, but whats the point in being a band if 20 people want towatch you and you can't sell out, and then a world tour sells out in hours?
It's obvious you are a total different person to me, but then again, Barnsley ;)
Because as far as I'm concerned you should be in a band for the love of the music, and if a manager asked me to change because he thinks I could make more money I'd walk straight out. I'd much rather be known in the underground with people who are into my kind of music than on the front of magazines being idolized by people who are just into me because it's the 'in' thing. As long as I had enough money to live on, I don't see how anyone could want anything more.
Perhaps I'm naive, but, having not experienced the situation, I'd have to say that's what I'd do.

I'd rather make millions than 'just get by' tbh, I'm not saying I'm go and play utter tosh, but I would change for money, after all its a living lol
Again, it seems your answers are based on the fact that you dont consider yourself to follow trends and such, you really shouldn't stereotype people who like to listen to music whats 'in' or dress good etc.

I wouldn't want to be popular among a bunch of idiots who don't appreciate what you actually want to do though. I couldn't live with myself if I did it the corporate money-making way. That's just me though, people make a stand in different moral situations. I'd rather not conform to what society wants me to be and I find that is influential on who I am. Other people are more interested in stopping 'druggies'.

I didn't stereotype anyone by saying that. I'm saying you can get your five minutes of fame by jumping on the bandwagon, but no-one is going to remember you in the long run because you're not doing anything original, you're not contributing to music, you're just making up the top forty. So, ultimately, it counts for nothing.
And I actually laughed at the 'dress good' comment, but I don't want to start that again.

I was saying I like to dress to the appropriate fashion, alas I care about a social life, something which for a 'strange' reason, you dont seem to.
No I dont act/dress/like the same stuff as a kid who likes top 40 music, but I care about myself.
I'll leave it there.

Summed up everything I thought really, and Dale, being popular isn't the be-it all, end-all in life, in matter of fact, popularity means nothing. Just read, 'Death of a Salesman' to work that one out.
Also, yes, I'd rather be an artist, playing my music, the music I love to play to people who actually appreciate it in every sense than play music to suit popular culture. Just my opinion though, not music snobbery as it was referred to before.

Yeah, I think it has a lot of good songs: 'Your Glasshouse', 'In Her Music Box', 'The Skinny', and the ones you've already mentioned. It's the only album of theirs I have at the moment, but I'd definitely like to hear more from them. Any album in particular I should get first? I looked for similar artists and Brother Ali and Aesop Rock were mentioned a few times, what do you think of them?

Because people dressed in rags are the most popular people on earth.
If I flip it the other way around, are all well-dressed people extremely popular? of course not.
Unfornately we are in a society where what people wear and what they look like helps create our opinions on people. Depends what you mean by 'rags' I know plenty of people that spend very little on clothes but are popular. For me clothes aren't that important I wouldn't spend silly amount of money on a item of clothing. I also don't judge peopleby what they wear, judging a book by its cover comes to mind. Just to bring this back on topic I'd rather spend my spare money on music rather than clothes.

You Can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having is my favourite of theirs so far – you should definitely check that out.
As far as Aesop Rock goes, I have only really properly listened to None Shall Pass which is great, that has some fantastic songs (Dark Heart News, Coffee and None Shall Pass). Labor Days is supposedly his best (I think) but I haven't properly listened to that so I couldn't say.
I got Shadows on the Sun by Brother Ali but, again, I haven't given it a proper listen. From what I have heard of it it's good, though.
Different branch of hiphop, but I'd check out the Low End Theory by A Tribe Called Quest and Be by Common, both are great.

The Strokes, Libertines, Babyshambles, Franz Ferdinand, BLOC PARTYYYYYY (well silent alarm and half of awitc anyway), the Cribs, the Courteeners, Little Man Tate, the Futureheads, We Are Scientists, Boy Kill Boy.
The indie/rock scene is packed atm. They won't have that same raw Sheffield sound (apart from Little Man Tate really) but they're all pretty class (haven't heard anything from Boy Kill Boy though so I can't comment on them).

I prefer Nikolai's to the others. Albert's, quite enjoy listening to, but hasn't really enticed me to buy an album. Don't really like, 'Little Joy' that much but Nikolai's solo act is quite good, seems to be coming out with some nice melodies.
Edit: Also, the lyrics are very deep and emotional + his vocals are brilliant.

I prefer Albert's the most, by far. Yours to Keep is such a good record, has a real Buddy Holly-like sound to it. His new album is decent, but nowhere near as good as his first.
The other two are OK, but I don't see as much character in them, really. Though, to be fair, they've only put a few songs out.

Same. And generally, when there is media attention, it is focused on Joy Division's music being shown to be tragic after the death of Curtis, rather than seen as the fantastic and original, which (imo) is the reality of the music that they made.

Agree with the point about the attention usualy about it being tragic. Apart from one article in Q which I read because I had a long plane flight which was on the anniversary of his suicide which said that JD were a great loss because of their orignality.
If Im honest In general I hate articles on bands because its all subjective, people shouldn't read articles about them instead listen to their music. I find all articles either bumming a band or just absolutly trashing them. Thats why I just dont bother to read them.

Agree with that to an extent, not saying G&R as a band were bad but once Slash left that should have been it. Slash is one of the all time greatest guitarists and was definitely the key in propelling G&R to the legacy they laid down.

The Doors - Strange Days
They didn't have them. :/ So they're still evading me.
I love it how their used frequently on the soundtrack of, 'Apocalypse Now', fitting.

Is there a Zavvi near where you live? Because they're £5/£6 there, whereas HMV sell them for about twice that.

Nearest Zavvi is an hour away. Maybe near Christmas time, I'm telling a lot of people to just buy me CD's so if I don't get them before then, they're definates for Christmas.
After just looking, it only says, 'The End' actually. :/ But it's used more than once, in General Studies, my teacher showed us clips and every clip, basically, The Doors were playing.

I really like the album cover. The boy seems more than happy to follow the faceless girl, wherever she's going. Meanwhile, in the background, people are drowning, boats are sinking and it just generally seems like a dystopian-like existence filled with disappointment and misery. It feels like it's asking you whether you'd risk following the mysterious stranger to a new world or you'd stay in your own imperfect one.

I lol'd at JJ's analysing of that front cover.
I dont get this issue with 'mainstream' music. It seems you Adam aren't pleased if a song is being played. It seems you only like songs which you dont hear on the radio. Lets put it this way, if you put a JD song on a big radio your more likely to lose listeners than you are that Guru Josh song, which tbh is a good dance track. Why do I think if Sex on Fire wasn't played as much on the radio you would be up its ar*se.
Rant over.

The Beatles and Elvis are 40 years old ;)
And no, I have no idea who 3 of those 5 are :p
Mainstream bands these days, are just completely wh0red. Fair enough if they build up their success over a period of time, but when they get too much success too fast they become unpopular. It's just how it is. And when, as someone earlier stated, 7 year old chavs start playing Sex On Fire, it looses all credibility.
Leeds_All_The_Way

I know theyre 40 years old, but theyre pop music, everyone in their respective decades loved them, so that makes them have no credibility.
Because you dont have any idea who those 3 are, and theyre probaly some of the biggest Dj's in the world, then it clearly shows you I dont listen to music which you associate with '7 yearold chavs'. Then again I suggest you move areas because I've seen chavs, but never 7yo ones.
Again, no offence, but theyre hardly unpopular if they sell their tours and they get to #1 with a single (as much as its easy to do that these days)

The Bealtes and Elvis didn't just wake up one morning, and had overnight become a worldwide supergroup. Like I said, if you get too much success too fast then you become unpopular.

Depends if you drink a lot of cheap cider, pick on people who are different from you, or have impregnated anybody under 16.

Other than his awful music taste to me TVR seems to be one of the happiest guys on here :D
And as for mainstream music, there are some good and some bad. Sex on Fire for example is actually a good song, people are only annoyed because it's so overplayed. Loads of people thought it was brilliant when it first came out, and probably will again if they hear it for the first time in 2-3 years later.
However if you get mainstream acts like Rihanna, Britney Spears and Chris Brown, the music is absolutly dreadful and overplayed. They're only popular because of looks, lifestyle etc, none of which you can pick up on other a radio.
