I know a few people on this board are fans of the Arctic Monkeys, so I wondered what people think of the album title...

If not, you should check it out. It's beyond words.
Their follow up: Frances the Mute, is of course number 15 in my top 18 albums of the year. It's a very disapointing follow up as DITC is so amazing, but FTM is still pretty good.
I was reading a review of a recent Mars Volta concert and they were on stage for 2 and a quarter hours and performed just 8 songs
I would absolutely love to see them next year some time.

Yep, that's what they've done.
It's like they're being pretentious but in a naive way (I've been trying to word what I mean for ages, it's hard).
If you look on amazon, they have the album up for preorder and 4 people have already rated it 5 stars

I remember you asking me the same thing about A Certain Trigger on MSN and I just listed all the songs. Here's my recommended songs from De-Loused in the Comatorium:
1. Son Et Lumiere
2. Inertiatic Esp
3. Roulette Dares (The Haunt Of)
4. Tira Me A Las Aranas
5. Drunkship Of Lanterns
6. Eriatarka
7. Cicatriz Esp
8. The Apparatus Must Be Unearthed
9. Televators
10. Take The Veil Cerpin Taxt
:p
Ok, seriously:
Tracks: 1 & 2 (1 is the build up to 2 and when track 2 kicks in, you just think WOW)
Also: 3, 7 and 9.
What sort of music is it?
It's like nothing else I've heard. I suppose it's a bit weird in comparison to some of the awful dull music out there at the moment. Give it a try and don't give up on them after one listen (remember the Arcade Fire?)

I've still not the got the Arcade Fire album, Ive heard neighbourhood #3 and thats fantastic so its on my xmas list!
For me Bloc Party is the album of the year, I love every song on it, I saw them live which added to my view of the actual band and its partly because I still dont have some of the best albums e.g. Arcade Fire, Maximo Park, Cribs, Paddingtons.
The Babyshambles album is very under-rated, its a fantastic album all thats wrong with it is the quality of the recording but for me it gives it a live feel which is great!
I cant wait for next year, The Strokes new album is great! I love it already! And I'm going to see them! Arctic Monkeys have their debut album coming out, most of the tracks I'm downloading at the moment. Red Hot Chili Peppers have there album coming out which should be good. The Zutons who are one of my favourite bands have there second album which I've been waiting ages for! Bloc Party, The Killers, Razorlight could sneak there albums into the back end of 2006 and if i remember correctly Radiohead have a new album coming out!
I thought 2005 was a good year but 2006 should be better!

Super, super, super album.
Yep - good album - that's the only Gang Of Four album I've got so I can't really judge on whether it's the best but it's one of the best punk/postpunk albums out there...
Also try Wire - from around the same time but slightly more experimental. Two great albums - Chairs Missing (the best - especially the tracks I Am The Fly and Outdoor Miner) and Pink Flag (a bit more avant garde and experimental so there's some duffers on there, but certainly worth a listen).
Listen to all 1 minute 55 seconds of 12XU from the Pink Flag album and just be blown away by how good a punk/indie/rock song it is...
Both bands are the 'godfathers' of what music is coming out at the moment - Franz Ferdinand, Futureheads and Maximo Park especially conform to these bands' templates, as did mid-90s bands like Elastica.
Anyway - to change the mood completely, this week's purchases - Boards of Canada's new album (very chilled) and the Cure's Greatest Hits (one surprise gap in my music knowledge - I don't know much about the Cure - so time to investigate!).
Oh, and I had a listen to Mars Volta last night - see what they werre like. Too experimental, even for me!

1) Wire are brill RG you re right. Thats where Elastica (another great band from a while back) stole their sound from as you correctly point out.
2) Boards of Canada are good but you should try Four Tet as they re even better.
3) The Mars Volta need a number of listens before they grow on you.
4) Rearranged my considerable vinyl collection over the weekend and was reminded of the following great bands: Swell, Throwing Muses, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, Black Flag, The Boo Radleys etc
5) The Cure are legends!!! Particularly essential from their later output is DISINTEGRATION which is a masterpiece. Try also THE HEAD ON THE DOOR, 17 SECONDS and the triple lp (guess its a double CD) with an orange cover which title escapes me... but really ALL their albums are worth your while.

Found it now. The second disc wasn't listed on Amazon. I'll have to get that just for the acoustic version of 'A Forest' which is an amazing song.
Speaking of the Cure, one of their similar artists on Amazon is Cocteau Twins. Aren't they just incredible? I've been brought up on them really and because my Dad liked them, I automatically disliked them (rolleyes to self). Well I bought him this amazing 4 disc box set for his birthday (the packaging is awesome) of rarities/alternate versions and b sides and stuff. I now really really like them.

1) Spot on about Elastica RG. After their first one Justine became a cokehead and disappeared up her own behind.
2) Four Tet can be extremely avant garde. If you re after chill out music try LAYO & BUSHWACKA's last album from a couple of years back called NIGHT MOVES if memory serves.
3) Yeah the Boos were great - saw them in concert a couple of times and they were amazing as well. The Pixies - what a band eh? Touched by the hand of god they were -Surfer Rosa and Doolitle are among the greatest records ever made. Currently holding my breath for their new album. The Breeders were great as were the Throwing Muses (who unfortunately dont have the reputation they deserve - they were one of the 90s greatest bands imho).
4) Do any of you guys like KATE BUSH or (the all time greats) THE SMITHS?
5) Also a godlike genius is PJ HARVEY who I actually met way back when she was starting out. Bought her a beer in a gig and had a chat and she was very nice.

On the Arctic Monkeys album, track listing is amazing, the title is complete crap and the album art has me torn to be honest. On first look I thought it was rubbish, like Seeph, but it's growing on me, not least for the big link (in my mind) between this and Radiohead - No surprises video. Get an earlier album like Beggars Banquet, Sticky Fingers, Flowers, Exile on Main Street or Let It Bleed and you'll see why the Rolling Stones are so revered. True, after about 1972 they go a bit crappy (IMO) - but in the 1960s they were fantastic. Really amazing stuff.
Ok, now here I was this morning, sitting on the sofa, listening/watching 'The next song will be great' on VH1. As the programme title suggests it supposed to be great songs. I watch it in and out every morning before school and it's usually very good. but this morning it was abysmal, really it was. Imo that is though. So I kinda tuned out a bit, but then as if by a flash of smarties a truely great song came on. It was released this year by former 'Verve' frontman Richard Ashcroft and it is called 'Break the night with colour' and it is quality. I was humming and singing it all day. I really do reccommend it to you guys, ok yeah some may disagree but IMO this song is quality.

4. Franz Ferdinand - You Could Have It So Much Better (a step up from their debut, a much more mature set, especially the blinding song 'Eleanor Put Your Boots On - a stone-cold classic)
5. Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger (blinding Geordie punk pop - their star is only going to grow and grow. While they are still a singles band for now their album was a great debut)
I knew I was going to buy Maximo Park's album after downloading the demo version of Apply Some Presure. I cannot think for the life of me why I downloaded it or how I found out about it, but it must have been dorment on my iPod for a while. It has some very good songs. I don't really know why it's not in my 18, I think I must have forgotton about it but it probably should be in there.
I got the Franz Ferdinand album when it leaked to the internet but wasn't very impressed. Thought it might be a grower but I still don't like it that much. The first single is very good and the current single is ok. Eeanor Put Your Boots On is absolutely amazing. One of my favourite songs of this year. Should be the next single and should do well. The album just wasn't for me really.
I was initially quite underwhelmed by Maximo Park's album but boy has it grown on me. I still find the guys voice quite funny though (maybe its the scouse accent).
The second album by Franz p*sses on their first from a very high altitude imho, though I cant understand why everybody is singling out the most ordinary song on it (Eleanor ...) for praise. This Boy among others is miles better.

He's not scouse, he's a geordie boy! (probably why I like it!)
Maximo Park was a real grower on me. I was initially quite disappointed by it but I've listened to it quite a bit over the last few months and it's really good now.
'Eleanor Get Your Boots On' - fantastic track. Love it to bits. The whole album is so much better than the first - the first was just a 'singles' + filler album for me.
Number three to follow tomorrow! Can anyone guess the top three?
Currently playing the Radio Dept - Lesser Matters. Great laid-back electronica.

1. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah- Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
2. Sigur Rós- Takk...
3. Anthony and the Johnsons- I am a Bird Now

One out of three ;)
I've decided not to put in Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - wait for the proper UK release on that one. Means I've got one-fifth of my 2006 top five done already!
Antony and the Johnsons - like the album, but there's highlights and there's lowlights. Too inconsistent for me. The first track on there is wonderful though.
Added to this Ryan Adams' album, and the new Mogwai album (which I've heard a preview of and it rocks) I think it might be a packed year for good music...

4. Final Fantasy - Has A Good Home
5. Patrick Wolf - Wind In The Wires

I've got a new favourite album for next year. It was The Strokes, but they've been over taken by Belle and Sebastian's latest masterpiece.
It's hard to be believe a band that are so prolific can be so original album after album.
The Life Pursuit is a top album. There's so many music genres in there, I can't stop listening to it.

I was going by the CD's spine - so there :p
The full title is 'Come on Feel The Illnoise' really, but Windows Media Player calls it Illnois when I ripped it to my PC so that's good enough for me!
Charlton - the Belle and Sebastian album - didnd't realise they were releasing another one so soon after Push Barman to Open Old Wounds (OK, I know that's a B-sides compilation on it - it's got the legendary The State I Am In on it). Cool, that's brightened up the day!

The Tears is a bad name but the album is quite good!! The quality of the song writing is of early Suede standard and it sounds exactly like Suede (think Dog Man Star but rockier and more upbeat) and Butler is brill with the guitar though he overdoes it slightly sometimes.

No idea on the legality of that - so I'll leave it up for now pending advice. If they were released by the band then it's cool. If they weren't then it's probably not the best. I suppose the best thing to say is Codemasters is not responsible for this link at all.

Good work that man! i dunno if you have any of their albums yet...
Buy them in this order....RATM (first one), Battle of Los Angles, the Live album and then the rest of 'em.
Saw RATM when the first album came out. Stood next to the main speakers for the entire concert moshing and couldn't hear anything for three days afterwards. I blame them for my bad hearing nowadays.
EDIT: Just listening to a few songs by New Young Pony Club - quite good stuff:
http://www.myspace.com/newyoungponyclub
Sounds like Bloc Party as sung by the bird from Goldfrapp with Tom Vek remixing Mylo and early eighties New Order/electro in the background. Best description I could come up with :)

thats harsh, but it aint fair youve seen them.
Are they ever touring again or is it all Audioslave now?
also listening to a Biffy Clyro tune-'glitter and trauma' just a mixed alternative style, quite cool

Rage basically lost Zack De La Rocha, as he wanted to be more political and stuff. The other 3 then recruited Soundgarden's frontman Chris Cornell....and now they are Audioslave.
I've heard from some mates that have seen them that they do some RATM and Soundgarden covers at their gigs, to keep the punters happy.

Hard-Fi
Manic Street Preachers
Lenny Kravitz

To name a few. I've got the Stereophonics and Guns n' Roses Discographies to go through, with the Green Day and Iron Maiden Discographies downloading. The Iron Maiden one should be done in about 65 days. Thats what it says on the downloady thing. :)

Erm...Yes, Twista, Slow Jamz. Tune! But i just can't stand all the black rapper stuff. It's all a bit too 'gangstar' for me. It's like, 'yea, your a real gangstar, look at you with ya mansion and pop album'. Eminem's a legend,
I'm still istening to Milburn, Arctic Monkeys, bit of Hard-Fi, Linkin Park, Craig David (Who's new album is surprisingly good).

I was thinking of getting them actually. I was originally going to get the latest by a band called Eluvium - very laid back, like Sigur Ros on valium - but the waiting time for it is 4-6 weeks, so balls to that.
I'm definitely getting the Doors debut album just because I used to have to it years and years ago and it'll bring back some great memories - and I might go with GYBE. But all other suggestions gratefully accepted.
I'm like wotsit at the moment. Erm...Ordinary Boys. Hadn't heard much of their music, only what I heard on soccer am. Heard that Preston was in BB house so thought I'd check their music out and well, it's good.
Some bands that you may not have heard of or some may have heard of :D
1) The Cuban heels - She's on Fire
2) British Hawaii - Blast 1
3) Artisan - Over soon.
4) Kinyob - The march of the disturbed aka Dazzy ;)
5) Tanner Dean - The Death of Joe

I was honestly surprised as I was going through the songs. Absolute quality. I hadn't realised how much stuff they'd released. I thought the same about the Keane album aswell. :)
I only kept six of the Hard-Fi songs.
Better Do Better
Cash Machine
Hard To Beat
Living For The Weekend
Tied Up Too Tight
Unnecessary Trouble
I'd keep all of these albums intact, but I'm running out of room on my hard drive, even more so with this 1.56GB Iron Maiden Discography and either 2 or 3GB Lost Series 2 (1-9) download. I need to get through eveything I've downloaded so far.

Best song ever is always impossible to agree on. For me it's Sympathy For The Devil - for the wife it's probably something terrible (although she does love Golden Touch by Razorlight). I'd say Atmosphere is up there (Love Will Tear Us Apart has to get a mention as well) though.

The Go! Team are superb. I find their album particularly good for revision along with anything by GY!BE because of the lack of lyrics.
I'm going to say the BYOP album is great again. It really is. Normally, with leaked albums that I intend to buy, I listen a few times and delete it from the computer so I don't over listen before it's even out. However, with BYOP, I don't want to delete it. It's great. My favourite album of '06 thus far and I've heard quite a few.

Aphex Twin - a bit of pointles information I know but .......
He (Richard I seem to remember his name might be) used to live in the room underneath my Sister when they were at Uni together in Kingston. When I used to go and see her and kip on her floor I used to spend all night being kept awake by his acid / techno / ambient tunes.
I used to sit in his room and listen to him messing about with his records, he gave me a signed copy of 'boomerang' which he'd just demo'd pre-release, and loads of other random mix CD's. I think that I've even got an old jacket of his somewhere in the loft from when they didn't pay their electricity bill and I was frozen. Nice bloke he was.
That must have been somewhere around 1992/1993 - corrr blimey that's going back abit! Surprised I can remember.

I heard that on the radio - awful.
RG - you're not wrong about the Killing Moon! I'm sure Tom will agree also

Ahh yes now i get ya, some of that stuff is classic!
I quite like Aphex Twin, windowlicker is an absolute classic, although if im honest i havent listened to much of his stuff lately.
Ive been buying alot of the techy minimal stuff, John Tejada, Jeff Samuel, Mathew Jonson, Matthew Dear, Egg, Booka Shade etc and i really like it, especially played over a loud system as it brings the beats out alot more n sounds far superior to some of this dnb stuff!
Also Their Law: The Singles by the Prodigy, hasnt been out of the cd player since that awesome gig in Brixton!

Shame on you, Shame, what albums you tried, if you dont like metal you should just listen to the black album or Load, but if you like metal then try Master of Puppets and Ride the lightning.
Iv'e now devoted my music life to Metal, as it is the most important genre, the more I hear of it, the less everything else matters.
Metal is the biggest genre there is, with over 20 sub genres, there is something for everyone in metal if there willing to search

I certainly do. It's one of the best songs ever and is by one of the most over looked bands ever. 26 years on and it still sounds amazing, even better live.
I've got to hear this cover of Love Machine. I bet it's not as good as the Girls Aloud version though. That's superb.

I've only listened to one of their albums, from 1988 I think. I like "Nothing Else Matters" though. I got that from a compilation disc. :)

The album from 1988 is "An Justice for all" you wont like it if in general you not a fan of thrash metal, Id recommend you listen to the black Album, from 1990, That album has nothing else matters on it, Enter sandman, The Unforgiven and sad but true, alll metallica's big commercail songs that beginners of metallica will enjoy

At the moment I'm actaully Exploring Romainian Metal, Ive been quite suprised with the qaulity of music Ive come accross some good music.
Most of Romainian metal seems to be Gothic Metal, or Black Metal, and some symphonic metal.
In General the vocals are not English, which makes it very hard for a non-metal dedicated listener to enjoy, but never the less the vocals on the Gothic side of things are very good.
The Vocals on the Black Metal scene are quite poor throughout, none of the Black Metal bands seem to have anything distintive that sets them apart from other bands, but the gothic and symphonic metal is quite a treat

I ended up with either 17 or 22 CDs worth of Metallica stuff. I deleted all the "Best Of" stuff and live CDs. I've been left with the following.
Black Album
Garage Days
Garage Inc
Kill Em All
Live s**t binge purge
Load
Load B-Sides
Master Of Puppets
Metallica
Nothing Else Matters
Reload
Ride The Lightning
S&M
I can't remember the name of the only album I've listened to so far. Once I've been through them all, I'll post a list of the songs I've kept. :)

Not your kind of stuff?
Two of Radiohead's albums are renowned as classics (The Bends and OK Computer) but if you don't like them then it can be tortuous to listen to!
EDIT: Today in my alphabetical musical odyssey I've had to go through six hours of Elvis Presley. On to the last four tracks now. It's been a blast actually - singing along at the top of my voice. "WE'RE CAUGHT IN A TRAP, I CAN'T WALK OUT! BECAUSE I LOVE YOU TOO MUCH BABEH!"
There's some times when working from home is a lot of fun :D

I didn't have The Bends, but I had OK Computer.
The ones I got were Amnesiac, Hail To The Thief, Kid A and OK Computer. It wasn't the most pleasant experience I've had, put it that way.

I cannot believe people find Radiohead depressing. They are the best amazing band since The Smiths. Musically they are sensational and lyrically they're better than most. Each to their own though I suppose.
I've been listening to Mclusky Do Dallas today. Really good album.
For anyone who likes amazing post-rock, head over to www.yndihalda.com and buy a copy of their EP for £5. They come in hand made cases. They're completely unique.

My thoughts entirely Charlton fan!!!
Great recent purchases btw. Have you got Gold Against the Soul? Its considered to be quite weak for some reason but to my mind its fine and contains some of the Manics' best work (Roses in the Hospital, From Despair to Where and a couple of others).

Well I've just been through Franz Ferdinand's, Kaiserchiefs' and Shakira's new albums, and the only song I like from all three albums is Shakira's new song, Don't Bother. Shes got a pretty face, but she scares me.

Alright Tom, I love the Manics to bits but even I have to admit Generation Terrorists is pretty average. It's too long and sounds really dated, some bona fide classic tracks on there but it's actually their weakest albums as a whole I think
Gold Against The Soul gets slated mostly as they totally changed their sound to appeal to America and it flopped a bit, stronger album than it gets credit for though I say with Sleep Flower, From Despair to Where and Life Becoming A Landslide all superb. Not to mention La Tristesse Durera which is one of their finest moments ever.
Holy Bible is perfect, wouldn't change a thing, in my top five albums of all time that one. Everything Must Go is almost as good.
Started to go a bit downhill after that but even their worst albums have some stunning tracks on, so if you can afford their entire back catalogue then do it! Their latest Lifeblood also seems to have gone down like a lead balloon but after a couple of listens it grows on you and I'd possibly place it above their first two efforts.
