And also, Set Your Goals, i've had them on my PC for ages, but only just got round to listening to them. 'Mutiny!' sounds a good album

We Are Scientists were great at Leeds, I was right at the front and getting mashed by f#cking pushing from the back though, was not impressed.

I have never once felt the need to stab myself in the arm after a long session of Joy Division, The Smiths, Radiohead or any other band that should apparently force me to do so.

I think it would be a reasonable statement that a lot of bands become more, I daresay 'successful' just more widely known I think, when the lead singer dies/commits suicide.

Nirvana, Joy Division etc. are no exception :)

Joy Division > The Smiths > Radiohead IMO.

But then again I've never got into Radiohead. The Smiths were great but Joy Division there's just something special about them the way they manage to create mood within their songs and everything. Okay they may have got a little over-hyped like a lot of things but they were a truely great band. Without them we wouldn't have bands like Interpol or Editors for example.

Radiohead > Smiths > Joy Division

At first I never got into Radiohead until I really gave all of their music a good listening to, and now Radiohead is one of my favourite bands.

Although, you couldnt say without them we wouldnt have had Interpol & The Editors, they would've just influenced them, not directly based off them im sure.

Interpol and Editors definately base their sound on Joy Division, that cavernous, deep echoing sound that they all use.

The Smiths > Joy Division > Radiohead

but I love all 3.

My favourite band are the Doors. Hitherto, I never thought I'd say any band other than the Libertines were my favourite, but I've never connected to a band as quickly as I did with the Doors.

My sort of inner circle would be: the Stooges, the Doors, the Kinks, the Velvets, the Libertines, the Smiths and the Clash.

I couldn't name my outright favourite band, considering how often it changes. I suppose an artist that I'd always feel like listening to would fit that bill, but I haven't come across any of them yet.

But, generally, some of my favourites at the moment are Atmosphere, the Decemberists, and 65daysofstatic.

See, I know a lot of people like that, who have a new favourite band every week or so (I'm not sure whether yours is quite to the extent of that, to be fair).

I find it weird. To me, it was a really big deal to call a band other than the Libertines my favourite. It takes a lot of listening to even breach my so called inner circle.

Well, it's not as excessive as the people who listen to a different genre every month – my musical taste is quite clearly defined (pretty much hip-hop and folk-influenced stuff. Oh, and 65 who are crazy).

Like I said, I don't really have one outright favourite, which is why they're a bit changeable. But not actually that changeable, since I sort of have an 'inner circle' like you say. Generally I just go through listening to a few artists from my inner circle more than others, and since I don't have one favourite band this kind of constitutes a favourite.

sure, that made sense

Right, cause a band can't change their style a little bit without being branded 'sell outs'. How pathetic. Very few bands have a discography where every album sounds the same, bands change, the members of the band change, the music they make changes, they are not sell outs for it.
Brand New went from Pop-Punk, to a more slightly Post-Hardcore(ish) sound, to a more alternate sound, yet I've never met one of their fans who say they 'sold out' and it's because they aint that big (and they really should be huge) As soon as a band becomes big, and their style changes slightly, they are 'sell-outs'. I could write a big bloody long list of bands whose style has changed, why are only some picked out as 'sell-outs'? It annoys the hell out of me! :bw: :cuss:

Hmm, what I struggle to understand on this forum, is that after a bit of Joy Division, Smiths, Radiohead and other suicide promoters bumming, everyone seems to jump on the proverbial band-waggon and worship them. Like all bands, they will have been influenced and they will influence others, but to put them in the league of the Beatles etc etc is mental. I can see why people like them I guess, but miserable droning doesn't do it for me, don't patronise me either with i don't know blahdy blahdy blah.

Incidentally, what I seem to find, is because everyone does jump on the whole Joy Division and stab myself in the arm music, they seem to think, that automatically makes them a musical conoisseur and genius and knower of all etc etc. And, its rubbish.

Yes.
I just spotted this post after looking over that discussion the other night.

In a way I get what you mean, I'm not a fan of people who kinda go with bands by their credibility alone. For example everyone seems to praise Queen as one of the best bands ever etc. and I just don't get them.

edit: Although I'd hardly call The Smiths (witty, sarcastic lyrics to brilliant music) and Radiohead (although 'Creep' - their most overated song I take your point with but nout else.) are hardly stab yourself in the arm music.

What a joke. Where are the Kinks or the Clash? The Stones at number nine!?

How exactly have the Arctic Monkeys warranted themselves a place? The Strokes shouldn't be in there but at least when they came along they were something new. The Arctic Monkeys are just going along with the scene, they're hardly changing the world.

The Roses spawned the whole 'madchester' scene which subsequently helped influence the 'britpop' era. The whole mixing guitars with dance music like they did was very unique at the time. A lot of modern day bands also cite them as an influence, too.

The Smiths' influences are very wide ranging, stretching from bands like Blur and Oasis to My Chemical Romance.

I can see perhaps their reasoning behind not having the Kinks on that list - I love the Kinks, but fact is the Beatles had a greater influence doing a similar thing at a similar time, maybe meaning they didn't class as 'changing the world'.

The Clash inspired an entire Genre, yet they're not included and The Arctic Monkeys are??

I thought the same, but Oasis and the Roses both inspired similar types of music, yet they're both on. At the time, though, the two bands weren't thought to be similar, the Beatles were a pop band who experimented with a more psychedelic aspect on Sgt. Pepper. Whereas the Kinks were considered to be one of the heavier acts of the time (it seems strange looking back on it now, as we have Guns N' Roses, etc. who we consider to be 'hard rock').

I wouldn't say the Clash inspired 'punk', either. The Americans were doing it years before us. I just think the Clash did it the best; they also put the political side of things into their lyrics, as well.
By inspired the genre I don't mean they created it, I mean they influenced everyone within that Genre, especially 90s onwards.

What punk bands were still active in the '90s?

I don't really think of the Clash as a punk band, to be honest. The only typical punk album - sound wise - is their self-entitled, with it's fast two minute songs, a-la the Ramones. They still kept it lyrically, but musically I'd say they evolved much more.

Well then, 'post-punk' is a completely different genre to punk. It's much more experimental, the only reason it even has the word 'punk' in it is because it came directly after the punk movement had finished.

One of the best albums I've ever heard is, 'Iggy Pop - The Idiot' bought it a few month back and instantly fell in love with it. Heavily influenced by Bowie, cause of course he produced it and helped Iggy write the songs and despite only being 8 songs, anyone who is interested in music should own this album. It's a masterpiece.

I think Intimacy is a step forward. I love it, but I was always going to as a massive Bloc Party fan. However, I think that people who want them to release what would essentially be the same stuff over and over again in order to maintain the successful formula from Silent Alarm have the wrong idea- one of the things I love about Bloc Party is their willingness to experiment and the fact that they are willing to change even a successful formula if they think it's for the progression of the band and their unique brand of music.

Intimacy, for me, is an indication of Bloc Party spreading their wings and becoming a better, more rounded band.

There are also less weak tracks on it than there were on the other albums, in my opinion.

No, I phrased it badly, what I meant was that I was always going to look upon the album in a favourable light, ie not instantly dismiss it as 'OMGZ CHANGE HANG THEM ALL!!!!111one'

If it was dire, I'd have said that, some of their stuff is IMO pretty poor (awful was too strong)

What is classed as 'Retro' music, need some for a Digital Media coursework :)

I've put stuff down like The Kinks, The Clash, The Stones, The Pistols, The Beatles etc. as they're older, but they're not really retro-style if that makes sense?

So would people like Calvin Harris be classed as Retro?

The track is one of the last songs we recorded during the 'Intimacy' sessions and we always had it in mind to be one of the extra tracks for the CD version if it turned out well. It turned out great so we decided to make it the next single.

Underoath have over thirteen million plays and their last album peaked at number two in the States.

Yes, but they (and everyone else) would essentially be playing the same song over and over again...

You answered my point with the second 'paragraph'. Just because some1 brings a new dimension to music doesnt mean hes the best at guitar, that means the first guy who introduced screamo, rap, etc is automatically good because he did.

He's not the best at playing the guitar, no. I never claimed he was. What I'm saying (or rather, what I've said) is that he deserves credit for creating a new aspect to music, and, in my opinion, that is a lot more impressive than simply being able to play the same old cover songs (which is what people - if we had your concept on the subject - would do) really well.

This, along with other things you've said, implies it's about how well they play, rather than what they play.

If no-one ever tried to be different, and no-one had any imagination or creativity (but they were amazing at they're instruments), we'd still be hearing the same (albeit, perfectly played and tuned) songs, i.e. essentially just a cover song.

The list maybe isn't technically the greatest guitarists, I suppose you could say it's more the greatest people to ever pick up the guitar (in their opinion, of course, I'd personally make a lot of changes) in a way, the people who made a difference with it, and didn't just follow everybody else.

I don't think you understand how important individuality is to music, really. You shouldn't look at everything so black and white all the time.

Yeah, introducing something doesn't mean they're good, it just makes them original :)
He wasn't just 'original', he defined an entire genre in it's truest form (Lou Reed was doing the basics about ten years earlier). A great guitarist isn't just about the skill, it's the ideas they have. That's what music is: different people putting their own ideas into something they love.

People who are just technically good at the guitar - but have no ideas of their own - don't go far in the world of music. The best they can hope for is standing in when a member of the band can't play or being in someones backing group - simply being told what to play by people who do have creativity.

I can say it over and over again, but you'll just reply with, 'yeah, but that doesn't make him a great guitarist.'

Yes it does.

Stretch Mouthstrong

I think we've established I think it does, as I've said (many times) a great guitarist involves more than just skill.

Take into account what kind of music was dominant when the Ramones first started up. It took bravery to try what they did, they were doing it not because they thought all music should be simple, but as a message to people that you can all be in bands. Deep Purple, Hawkwind etc. while they were amazing at what they were doing, they didn't make enough people feel inspired - because if you hadn't been playing the guitar since you were three you had no chance of playing like that. The Ramones didn't just inspire other punk bands, the attitude of trying something new was an inspiration for other new genres.

Being original doesn't make you great. Saosin are the one of the most original bands on their scene atm, but they are not great. You have to have brilliance to match the originality.
Have you ever heard the saying, 'fashion is about standing out and blending in'?

The same applies here.

Drinky_07
10-09-2008, 05:26 PM
To make that list you should be both technically brilliant and original. Plenty of guitarists are; Hendrix, Clapton, Satriani, Impellitteri, Malmsteen etc. Kurt Cobain didnt have great techincal abillity nor was he original so how he was at 12 I dont know.

In part I agree with LATW and Jimmy Jazz, there should be a balance between originality and technical ability.

Leeds_All_The_Way

'Greatest' Guitarist surely means more than just being the most talented at guitar. Great in this context to me is powerful, and influential - greatness is therefore very different from talent, and requires more. Without originality, talent is less likely to be noticed, or acknowledged. And rightly so.
