Has anyone heard the Vines' new album, 'Melodia'?

They're streaming it from their myspace. (http://www.myspace.com/thevines)

This is the NME (http://www.nme.com/reviews/the-vines/9836)'s review; which is pretty harsh but I'm not that surprised, to be honest. They slated their compilation, too.

On first listen, it's clearly not their best work. It's no 'Highly Evolved', but I wouldn't agree with the NME them when they say, 'it feels like a lifetime of Chinese water torture'.

The Vines are one of my favourite bands, I've listened to the new stuff but ain't really caught on to it yet. I also think what NME has wrote is a bit harsh.

What I've heard of the new album is distinctly bland, maybe not a 4/10 but no more than a 5/10

I quite like it, I just don't think it's "Highly Evolved" standards. "Get Out" and "He's a Rocker" are good solid songs, I just think they're missing that Grunge element they had in the past.

Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher has lashed out at fans of Radiohead and Coldplay, calling them "boring and ugly".

The star, whose band release their new album 'Dig Out Your Soul' on October 6, also revealed he's laying off the hard stuff and taken up jogging as the band gear up for their return after a near three-year absence.

He told The Times: "I've mellowed, but not in the sense of liking Radiohead or Coldplay. I don't hate them. I don't wish they had accidents. I think their fans are boring and ugly and they don't look like they're having a good time."

The star added he doesn't like any contemporary bands. He admitted: "Not interested. I play The Beatles, The (Rolling) Stones, The Kinks, Neil Young, the (Sex) Pistols. Maybe a bit of The (Stone) Roses. Don't like modern bands. Topman music, innit?"

Gallagher also said that he was cutting out the partying and concentrating on his fitness ahead of the band's return.

He said: "Last week me voice was a bag o'****e, I had to have a word with meself. I want this to be a success, I want this to be great, I thought 'I'm going to have to tone it down a bit'. Load of big fat lines, load of cigarettes, staying up late talking the same **** you talked the night before and the night before that, that's not good for it (his voice). When it's good, no one can touch me, And when it's bad, it's a bit better than Pete Doherty's."

"It's not a big deal. I've got willpower. I'm a good drinker, but it's dominoes, isn't it? Get ****ed, smoke, do the other.."

Can't believe he used the phrase, ''Topman music,'' that's what I said Foals were the other day!

Maybe, but he has an opinion and that's sadly quite rare these days.

He finds Radiohead and Coldplay boring, which is fair enough. The 'ugly' comment clearly comes from the fact he thinks their fans look miserable during their concerts, I don't think he means it quite so literally.

Plus, they've obviously asked him what he thinks of modern day music. I doubt he's gone out of his way to insult them.

I'm not too keen on the Definitely Maybe, but their (What's The Story?) Morning Glory is definitely full of 'hits'!

Roll With It, Wonderwall, Don't Look Back In Anger, Some Might Say, She's Electric, and Champagne Supernova all come from it- it's virtually their 'Greatest Hits' record!

It's amazing they've been around for over 15 years! Only 7 albums though, Some Might Say slightly unproductive ;) (see what I did there? :D)

The longest they've gone without releasing any new material is three years, which isn't exactly long.

Releasing seven studio albums, a live album and two compilations since '94 is pretty good.

Doubt it, Liam Gallagher always seems to be deliberately peeing everyone off, wanting to seem 'rock n roll'.

Got a Walkman phone, W910i, nice phone. But only got a 1gb memory card on it so I'm trying to cram as many good albums on as I can, and see what I have left. So now, after months and months of trying to find my perfect collection for a 1gb card, I've got -

Babyshambles - Down In Albion
Babyshambles - Shotters Nation
Iggy Pop - The Idiot
Jamie T - Panic Prevention
Joy Division - Only band that I haven't put albums on for, just 34 downloads.
Nirvana - Best Of, Black Album
Radiohead - The Bends
The Beatles - The Beatles 1
The Hives - Your New Favourite Band
The Libertines - The Best Of
The Pogues - The Very Best of (CLASSIC!)
The Smiths - Hatful of Hollow
The Stranglers - Greatest Hits
The Strokes - Is This It
The Strokes - Room on Fire
The Velvet Underground & Nico
The Vines - Highly Evolved (And a few random songs off different albums)

Yeah, I'd agree with that.

Billie Holiday was the perfect person to cover it; she had such a powerful voice. And, of course, the fact she could relate to it obviously added more to the emotion she could instill into the song.

Obviously, it is your opinion, but the fact that it is essentially pop punk hardcore is the reason they are so popular. It's because of their hardcore breakdowns and screaming they are the band they are, without the screaming they would be just another boring pop punk band.

Without being too picky, none of them bands would really fit under the 'screamo' genre. Madina Lake are more pop punk, TBS are like mainstream rock (for some reason ITunes classes all bands similar to TBS as Alternative & Punk lol) BFMV and Slipknot are metal ;) I don't really listen to YM@6 but my sister listens to them so they must be pop punk :p

Bands like, Underoath, From Autumn To Ashes, Alexisonfire are more Screamo.

Btw, did you listen to ADTR before that video?

I have no idea who Brokencyde are, are they like Bring Me The Horizon??

Yup, I wouldn't even know where to begin genre-ising those  ARSE-GRAVY.

And about the 'Screamo'. It's such an obscure genre, it's not just anything with screaming in, which really, SCREAMo would indicate.

I don't like all these genre's, they now have 'Nintendocore' and 'Melodic Death Metal' which is apparently people like BFMV and A7x.

Death Metal isn't meant to be melodic, therefore the genre is a contradiction of itself really, it's ridiculous :p

Bullet and A7X are nothing like Death Metal, even if you put "Melodic" infront of it.

On that note, who in their right minds would call a genre "Nintendocore" or "Melodic Death Metal"?

Bullet and A7X are both really Metal bands tbh. No idea how you could call them Melodic Death Metal :p

There are Melodic Death Metal bands, I've heard some stuff, and the musician ship is very good, you can see why they have that 'melodic' in their genre title, I just don't like the screeching.

Nintendocore is like Sky Eats Airplane, they have that whole hardcore thing going on but they have like cool electronic sounds in the background :D

I found billions of genre's through Wikipedia- here are some I find the most hilarious;

'Sludge Metal' - "Sludge metal is a form of heavy metal music that fuses doom metal and hardcore punk. Sludge metal is typically aggressive and abrasive; most often featuring shouted vocals, heavily distorted instruments and sharply contrasting tempos."

'Cowpunk' - "Cowpunk combines punk rock with country music, folk music, and blues in sound, subject matter, attitude, and style. It tends to downplay the fashion elements associated with the British psychobilly genre."

'Pornogrind' - "Porn rock is a form of underground music that usually falls into other categories, as its acceptance isn't primary nor is any youth subculture formed around it. The term mostly applies to punk and metal rather than rock."

'Shock Rock' - "Shock rock is a wide umbrella term for artists who combine rock music with elements of theatrical shock value in live performances."

'Blackened Death Metal' - "Blackened death metal (also called "death/black metal" or "black/death metal", depending on which style is dominant) is a fusion genre of extreme metal utilising elements of death metal and black metal; bands often hail from Europe. Many of the bands start out as full on black metal outfits and end up adopting death metal influences and fusing the two together, or becoming modern death metal artists."

'Mathcore' - "Mathcore (also known as technical metalcore, technical hardcore, progressive hardcore or progressive metalcore) is a polyrhythmic and dissonant style of metalcore, recognized for a high level of technical musicianship. Mathcore has its roots in bands like Converge, Botch, and The Dillinger Escape Plan."

Oh, and the description of 'Screamo' - "Screamo is a subgenre of rock music which evolved from hardcore punk and emo in the early 1990s. The term "screamo" was initially applied to a more aggressive offshoot of emo that developed in San Diego in 1991, which used short, chaotically executed songs which grafted "spastic intensity to willfully experimental dissonance and dynamics," often with a political message. Some groups had an even harder edge that put them closer to the noise rock and grindcore styles. In the early 2000s, the genre name began to describe a different, slower and less dissonant style that borrowed from alternative rock, most notably in a 2003 New York Times article. The term's application to the "second wave" is controversial among fans and practitioners of the earlier style. One musician observed that the term 'has been kind of tainted in a way, especially in the States'."

I take it you've heard of 'Black Metal'?

But have you ever heard of 'Unblack Metal'?

'Unblack Metal'
Unblack metal (also known as Christian black metal) is the Christian variant of black metal. It is a controversial genre, because black metal itself was developed with the intention of encouraging anti-Christian sentiment, both musically and socially. It is sometimes referred to as "Holy Unblack Metal", a term originally used by the genre-founder Horde on its influential 1994 album Hellig Usvart.
The Christian lyrical themes of unblack metal are usually melded with the common black metal imagery, regularly providing a Christian take on subject matter.

Honestly, categorising music is impossible nowadays, as every band fits into at least 20 genres!

Who are you're favourite Blues singers?

I like Muddy Waters, Son House and Robert Johnson the most.

Waters was impsired by those two Blues singers.

You ever seen the the film 'O'Brother where art tho?' the black muscian who sold his sole to the devil so he could play the guitar is based on Robert Johnson.

You ever get any Jimi Hendrix albums? He was clearly, like alot of rock artists inspired by the blues.

Anyway Nina Simone - Sinnerman/Spell on you. Two great songs and she has such a powerful voice.

Pop Punk - stuff like Blink 182

Emo - MCR
Screamo - From Autumn To Ashes
Mainstream Rock - Foo Fighters

tbh, Genres should just be scrapped. Everyone can argue about what Genre fits in what; Its like R'n'B now a days, what people class as R'n'B nowadays isn't what I would class as R'n'B.

Like Blink 182 are as about as Punk as Scooch. And I wouldn't class Foo fighters as rock either.

Honestly, I love this album on just my second listen.
I love the way they'll experiment and play what they want to play, rather than releasing monotone, mainstream music that will get them number ones and mainstream Radio 1 popularity.

But yes, they were brilliant last night.

NME 'Bloc Party lead singer bemoans lacklustre Leeds crowd during set':  What a bunch of idiots, does every band not wind up the audience to make them that bit louder? Especially Leeds and Reading, 9/10 bands said 'Reading were sh#te' or 'Reading were miles better than you, let's show them that Leeds is better than Reading!' and I'm sure the same applied at Reading. (Metallica even said Leeds were sh#t at Reading). The one thing that Leeds crowd was definately not on Sunday was lacklustre.

He said 'Come on Leeds, I know it's Sunday but you must have it in you to go crazy'. Then they horrendously misquoted him to make it look like he was slagging the crowd off.

The new album's not bad, it varies as with all Bloc Party albums from the softer songs to the heavier, louder ones, but it is very good. It seems to have divided opinions everywhere, but they do that with pretty much everything they have released since Silent Alarm.

The new album's not bad, it varies as with all Bloc Party albums from the softer songs to the heavier, louder ones, but it is very good. It seems to have divided opinions everywhere, but they do that with pretty much everything they have released since Silent Alarm.

Oh, and is it you who likes Alexisonfire? They were piiss poor

Do you like Aof, or is it just a chance to slate their genre ;)?

I suppose Radiohead really are the marmite of the music world. You either love them or detest them.
Like 'em or not, there's no doubt they're gonna go down with the likes of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Joy Division, David Bowie etc. as one of the best musical artists of all time.

Listening to Hail to the Thief atm, beautiful. Anyone know if the album title is a direct George Bush reference or not?

Nope, I went to see them and their fans were bell ends and the music annoyed me.

I'm not a big fan of the genre, but they stand out as the worst band I saw on Friday apart from MSI, who got ripped to **** (I avoided plain white t's, aha)

I quite like Mindless Self Indulgence, but the bassist gets a load of stick for being married to Gerard Way

Genre-isers; what are MSI classed as? :p

Aha, it was the same at Leeds  He got mud thrown at him which he then rubbed all over his face and pranced about like a fanny for half an hour. His f'cking hair annoyed me immensely.

That bassist wasn't gonna get any abuse from me, she was a bird

I would, and they're certainly one of the most influential bands of all time as well.

Influential maybe, but I think if you asked 1000 people to name the top 5 artists ever lived, most wouldnt name Joy Division.

I wouldn't. What is so special about them? Stop classing yourself as a person who knows their music, and people who disagree as people who do not.

What is so great about Joy Division? Love Will Tear Us Apart makes me cringe. It sounds so tacky

Just to correct you, I've heard alot of their stuff due to this forum, and to be honest not one song really stands out and shows me that theyre top class.

Joy Divison are good because of the Bass guitar. Love will tear us apart isn't even their best song.

I am not classing myself as a person that knows their music, infact I'd say I know very little about most music. I don't class people who disagree with me as people who don't know alot about music, did I say Leeds All The Way didn't know his music? No. I simply stated I knew 'tons' of musical experts would think of them as one of the greatest artists of all time.

You find that particular song tacky, fair enough. In future please refrain from telling me not to do things that I haven't done just because you disagree with my opinion and, as per usual want to be the guy on the forum who seizes opportunities to correct, disagree or seem like they are always right. It irritates me greatly.

No I don't think I was. I do apologize if you felt I implied that, it wasn't intended.

I was simply acknowledging their great level of critical acclaim, soz.

Hmm, what I struggle to understand on this forum, is that after a bit of Joy Division, Smiths, Radiohead and other suicide promoters bumming, everyone seems to jump on the proverbial band-waggon and worship them. Like all bands, they will have been influenced and they will influence others, but to put them in the league of the Beatles etc etc is mental. I can see why people like them I guess, but miserable droning doesn't do it for me, don't patronise me either with i don't know blahdy blahdy blah.

Incidentally, what I seem to find, is because everyone does jump on the whole Joy Division and stab myself in the arm music, they seem to think, that automatically makes them a musical conoisseur and genius and knower of all etc etc. And, its rubbish.

Yes.
