I have no problem wth swearing in songs but it has no place in pop music.

Little kids buy the no.1 singles so hearing "****ing high" in a song like that is going to have repercusions!

modern pop is absolutely awful and im not the type of person thats against pop its just that older stuff in the charts was a lot more effective, now its all about showing as many adverts as possible(yea off course they had adverts back in the time but theres way too many now inlcudin music adverts,ringtones...etc...oh and also-- imo

Whats The Editors' cd like? And, I mean music wise and not quality wise...

Anyway the new CD by THE HOT HOT HEAT (called ELEVATOR if memory serves) is a thing of beauty and catchy as the crabs (ask your naughty uncle)... I CANT RECOMMEND IT HIGHLY ENUFF.

On another tip (electronic/progressive) Danny Howell's mix cd for Global Underground (Miami) is extremely smooth.

Hot Hot Heat's new album is one I've been meaning to get for ages. Very underrated band although I wasn't as keen on their first album as I am on the new one.

Editors' cd is lyrically a bit disappointing but musically it sounds amazing, Munich, Blood, All Sparks and Bullets are particularly good. I love them.

James Blunt swearing in his songs??? Seriously???!!!

Not noticed it in that no, my brain shuts off to be honest when I hear his nasal whine on the radio!!! I remember seeing him on Jools Holland a while back and I can't remember what he played (he only got one song) but I remember thinking, if that's the best you've got to offer you're not going anywhere, shows what I know!

Following on from 'James Blunt syndrome', I've just bought Daniel Powter's (self-titled) album.

It's just as good as Blunt's effort, and perhaps even a tad more upbeat.

Specifically enjoying the songs 'Song 6', 'Free Loop', 'Bad Day', 'Jimmy Gets High', and 'Lost on the Stoop'.

For those who liked 'Back to Bedlam', I'd recommend this one as well.

My Dad has loads of theirs, so after hearing Killing Moon and getting that and playing it 27 times. I just put his collection on iTunes(40 songs) and also Electrafixion (Echo and The Bunnymen without their drummer (he died)). I would highly recommend them. Echo and the Bunnymen are very good in patches IMO - Killing Moon is simply an epic song (really good version of it in the film Grosse Point Blank as well), and I've got the album Ocean Rain (from about 1985), but I've never felt I should go out and buy more.

Their comeback single in the mid-90s (Nothing Lasts Forever) was fantastic though.

Perhaps I should try more.

I might ahve mentioned it before but Im into lots and lots of Jimi Hendrix at the moment. i mean ive always heard about that he was a legend, but i u sed to be stubborn with music choices. so when my mate finally brought round his sisters jimi hendrix experience cd to my mates house where we usually chill, it was the first album we listened to all the way through without skipping tracks for a long time. absolute classic.
so ive been bying lots of his stuff lately. fave tunes if i hand to name them...Hey Joe, Little Wing, All along the watchtower and the last 2 id heard aaages ago as chilis did live covers of these 2 on the mother's milk album-castles made of sand and crosstown traffic. i actually learnt to play castles made of sand, really complicated at the beggining.

I dono man, I mean I know for a fact that Frusciante loves Hendrix's work and gets the guitar spot on. only downside is Kiedis' voice , but I mean cmon it was back in 89, his voice was nothing special, in fact he was more of a rapper back then. His voice perfected towards the californication era really.
One cover I really do like is Fire, they get that absolutely spot on mainly becuase they play it quite often. They also speed it up like 3 times as fast compared to hendrix's original version.
But ye I do agree to a certain extent, and I reckon if they did Castles Made of Sand nowadays it'd be pretty good, much better than back in 89 anyway

Daniel Powter

2 quite similar artists but very good.

One thing i don't understand in music now though is why R & B and Hip-Hop has gotten so stupid.

I don't like it but i respected the artist as they were singing about things that affected them.

Now they throw a bunch of silly noises in or a popular artist to boost record sales with people who aren't fans of the genre.

Emminem - Ass like that:
"The way you move it, you make my pee pee go.........doing doing doing"
+ A bunch of muppets

Akon - Lonely:
(Alvin and the Chipmunks style) "Lonely, I'm mr. Lonely, i have nobody to call my ownnnnnnnnnn"

Mariah Carey seems to feature in everyones videos and artists have been singing about stiff but in a stupid way.....

I'm still going through my retro-stuff at the moment, bought a Bob Dylan compilation (The Bootleg Series Vol 7) that came out this week, has some remarkable early stuff from him from the early 1960s. Some absolutely amazing rare stuff on there.

Also heard their version of Smells like Teen Spirit  why cover one of the greatest songs of the 90's? and it's not even a proper cover, it's an insult and not funny at all.

I'm listening to it with friends and they'll all laughing and I'm standing there wanting the song to finish- it's awful. Not funny at all.

I can take jokes about people I respect, but when they're done badly well .

Why is it?
Well, I don't like the band for one thing. They've re released their album because it was such a flop last year and they've re released all the singles too many times.

I really like them live, thought they were great at Glastonbury and Philadelphila Live 8, so the album should be much, much, much better than it is.

There are much better similar artists out there who are maybe not as good live but their albums are stronger.

The most important thing is that I keep filling up my iPod and am having to delete stuff to put any new albums on and Kaiser Cheifs just don't cut it.

I only have one KC song on my iPod at the mo'. Their cover version of Heard it Through the Grapevine. It's a pretty bad cover (and cover versions show no creativity). It'll probably come off soon.

On the subject of the Help: A Day in the Life compilation, you should all buy it because it's for a great cause and the music isn't half bad. I love the Radiohead song, the Babyshambles song and the Go! Team song. There are some other good tracks on there as well. If you illegally download it, you are a complete and utter scumbag.

I'm not sure they have re-released it CF are you sure? They released it after Oh My God came out and it did pretty well, as far as I know it's not been re-released unless they've done one of those re-releases with a bonus disc or dvd or something, that always annoys me I must admit as the fans who bought it first time around and have supported the band since the start are the ones that get ripped off

The only single they've re-released is I Predict a riot and they put a new song on the double A side "Sink that Ship" as consolation for the fans. Remember a re-release will most like be a record comapny decision, not a Cheifs decision

What I've heard of Help is all pretty good, considering it was knocked up in a day. I tried to download it from the Help site but my uni internet is being gash still so will buy the hard copy at some point

There are some not so good songs (Keane, Radiohead was disappointing)

But there again Babyshambles 'Bollywood to Battersea' is amazing. The Hard-Fi song is fantastic. Levithian by Manic Street Preachers is good and I was surprised by the Magic Numbers and The Coral. The Gorillaz song is good with nice oriental guitaring. Mylo is actually quite good aswell as Emmanual Jal and some other person who's name i cant remember. How I see the world No.2 by Coldplay is good but the best song has to be either Kirbys House (Razorlight) or the Maximo Park song

Radiohead- disapointing? That song walks the title of best track on the album for me. A really daunting emotional track. Great stuff.

Should get the original from 10 years ago - really good tunes. Heard Radiohead's Lucky for the first time on that album, along with the first Manics song after Richie disappeared, the last ever KLF tune and Suede's best ever song (a cover of Elvis Costello's Shipbuilding). Anyway, I'll shut up as it's making me sound old - God, was it really 10 years ago? :D

Alright, there are Suede songs that are as good (personally I'd say Still Life and The 2 Of Us from the Dog Man Star album, Animal Nitrate, and The Living Dead, Bentswood Boys and Every Monday Morning Comes from Sci-Fi Lullabies are them at their height) - but it's a better version of Shipbuilding than Costello's version and that's regarded as a classic.

I do like Suede though - saw them at the time of Animal Nitrate and it was an absolutely cracking gig.

Starsailor - On The Outside

A more 'rockier' sound than before, and it makes you wonder why they didn't decide to do this before.
I'd say that it's an improvement on their previous releases, but there are memorable songs on each of their albums.

Some of the best songs on the new album that spring to mind are: 'In The Crossfire', 'Keep Us Together', 'White Light', and 'Jeremiah'.

Finally bought Hard-Fi's 'Stars Of CCTV' as well.
Admittedly, I did mainly buy it for 'Living For The Weekend', after hearing it numerous times on the radio, but the album certainly lives up to all the praise that it has received.

This Is Hardcore is also an excellent Pulp album George. It's a bit darker but a much better album I think. Class

Currently listening to Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

Canadian group, sound a bit like Talking Heads mixed with Aracde Fire and maybe a bit of Rufus Wainwright in there too. Really hard to describe to be honest but there is quite a buzz around them. I'm liking it

The album is only available on import at the moment though

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - heard some stuff by them and it's certainly my kinda stuff. I'm off to search for more now.

This is Hardcore is such an underrated album - I was listening to it on Friday driving along the M1 at the dead of night coming back from the Bob Dylan concert and it's great - bought it the day it came out and while I play Different Class once very couple of months, this gets played about once a week. Really dark album and perfectly suited to last night driving - especially when I had to take a detour through Sheffield (Pulp's home town of course).

Currently listening to: Takk - Sigur Ros. Best work yet from them (which is saying something) it is absolutely blinding.

It's slightly more upbeat than usual, not quite the massively chilled out vibe of their last couple but it's still amazing.

Need to catch them live as well - my mate said he saw them at the Lowry in Manc in June (I was going to go as well but was back home for the summer) and everyone was basically stood in silence almost crying for the entire gig. They were ace on jools Holland the other week as well.

I got hold of the Silent Alarm remixed this week (Bloc Party) and it's a massive disappointment. Don't bother if I were you - lazy cash-in and most of the remixes sound like knocked up in about 10 minutes. Very poor really apart from a couple of tracks

Listened to Up The Bracket last night for the first time in ages - forget what a special album that is. Also exploring some more Bob Dylan on RG's recommendation and after discovering the gem that is Blood on the Tracks.

Though as I said many times in the past you are the forumer whose taste in music I respect the most I have to say that I disagree with the above. The remixes do enough to show the songs in a different light while keeping their essence.

Currently listening to:

Kate Bush: Aerial- Weird as always especially CD1. Dont think a lot of forumers will go for this but its good for those who want to broaden their horizons.

Is it any good? I've heard some good tracks from CD1, but what about CD2, is that any good?
Also, if you like more unusual sounds, you should check out Antony and the Johnsons. 'I am a Bird Now' is a brilliant album.

They got the Mike Skinner mix/remix/whatever of Banquet on there? that's quite good, it's about how Skinner stole a microphone on Jo Whiley's Radio 1 show, twas yonks ago I think (the theft, not the song release, heard it on Fizz a few days ago;) ).....

EDIT: Just seen the track listing's and it's not...

I'm listening to a couple of albums, during the half term I bought Mylo's Destroy Rock and Roll and the Libertines - The Libertines as well. There was a couple of tracks I like on there - Tomblands and What Became of the Likely Lads are the only ones I can remember (mainly because I put them onto my mp3 player!!). On the Mylo album however, I like Muscle cars,Rikki, Destroy Rock and Roll, and Guilty Of Love.

And in the last few weeks I have been taking in a few cds into college as well, mainly my Bands 05 Compliations, Razorlight - Up All Night, Ian Brown - Solarized (what an album!!) and today listened to Employment by the Kaiser Chiefs:D

Found a couple of tracks for that album and it seems nice enough - he is apparently doing an album per US state so at current rate he should be finished in 2054...

Really enjoying Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's debut album - I'm a big fan of Talking Heads (they sounds quite similar vocals-wise) so it's not a surprise but it's really good. The last track on the album, "Upon This Todal Wave" is brilliant IMO.

I was thinking of trying the album - but she doesn't half go on a bit sometimes witrh all that weirdy-beardy stuff. As a singles artists she's top draw (the "Whole Story" compilation is great for example, proud to have that in my collection) but her albums can go off horribly. Milburn are ok. Can't remember where/how I heard about them. Only heard a few of their songs. Quite solid but nothing special/imaginative. I don't think I'd purchase their album when it came out though.

Wolf Parade - quite like what I've heard of them. Not bad at all. British Sea Power bought that album on the day of launch as I loved 'The Decline' so much but it was a bit of a disappoint. Bloc Party - meh. It's a good album - but not album of the year as NME said. But then the NME poll might have been slightly rigged...

I feel the same way about quite a few follow up albums, including some more albums in my seventeen. I still thought Open Season was very good though even if a bit disapointing.

The NME album of the year thing had to have been fixed. No proper music magazine would pick Bloc Party ahead of some of the other albums of this year. Also, they had the Babyshambles album in the top 10 and I think I read somewhere they slated it in the review.

Q's list was even worse. I don't think they've listened to X&Y or they might have a different copy to the rest of the world.

Any guess for my number 14, anyone?

I'm liking advertising space by local boy Robbie Williams. Very good song IMO.

My list will now have 18 albums. I missed out one. I said I was crap at remembering stuff for these compilation charts.

My top three list is the safest in many years, which is alarming cos it may be my age finally catching up with me:

1) Arcade Fire- Funeral
2) Franz Ferdinand - You can have it so much better
3) Bloc Party Silent Alarm

Btw check out The National's new cd. Its quite good fuzzy guitar based music full of passion
