I can see myself listening to these two for a long time :D Pretender is Foo's back to their very best and I'm sure you all know about Pigeon Detectives by now ;)
The Pigeon Detectives album is great! Went to see them a few weeks ago they were awesome! The lead singer reminds me of the lead singer from The Kooks :)

Listened to quite a bit of Elvis this morning (the 1968 NBC Comeback Concert - have a listen, it's an absolute classic) and now got the Go! Team on.

Not impressed too much with what I've heard of the Go! Team's new album (out in a couple of weeks) especially after their first was my favourite album of 2004, but I'll keep giving it a try and hopefully it'll click. At the moment though it just seems like a pale imitator of its older brother which is a real shame. It'll not be top of my best of the year I know that for sure.

For those that like the most obscure and obtuse stuff, four recently picked-up albums that'll probably be in my top 20 thus year:

- Studio "West Coast", 80s indie-inspired instrumental electronica (brilliant mood music)
- Caribou "Andorra", sixties psychedelic rock songs, great sound, good lyrics
- The Lovetones "Axiom", Aussie indie rock/pop band, sounds like 80s David Bowie
- Bishop Allen "The Broken String", American indie pop/rock - very knowing, very refined, very good.

Still doesn't beat Arcade Fire to number one of the year at the moment though...

Crane Wife for the win. Great album.

On a slightly similar tone, I've been listening to a new album by a band called Deer Tick over the past week (new album out last week called War Elephant) and it's a great little album - a real 'out of nowhere' find. It's laid-back, melancholy, and well worth a listen if you like US lo-fi indie rock with a bit of blues.

It recalls bands like Decemberists, along with Shack (if you've heard of them - if not look at the first post on this epic thread for more details) and blues/rock artists like Tom Waits. His voice takes a bit of getting used to, as it's very frazzled, but I'm finding it all good.

The Klaxon's sound nothing alike. Not a dig at you but i do think they are new-rave though they have a bigger dance-punk influence.

Just browsing the thread and noticed this post. Would like to point out that Hard Fi should NEVER be mentioned in the sam breathe as the other three artists.

Love that choon, but wouldn't say the lyrics are amazing. To be honest they are really, really simple lyrics but utterly magic at the same time. It's probably about alcoholism, but really I think just boredom of the people in his life is clearly in there, and that's how I relate to the song anyway. Brilliance:

"I hate them all, I hate them all
I hate myself
For hating them
so I'll drink some more
I'll love them all
I'll drink even more
I'll hate them even more than I did before"

Much clearer voice from Casablancas on 'First Impressions of Earth', especially compared to 'Is This It', he relies more on his vocals and it's obvious why. Brilliant album.

Jimmy Jazz
20-09-2007, 09:55 PM
The lyrics are simple yes, but I don't think that takes anyhing away from it's brilliance. I mean simple ideas are often the best.

The main reason I like it so much Is probably because I feel as though I can relate to it at the moment so much. (Which I suppose Is a kinda obvious reason why someone would like it so much.)

''I'm tired of everyone I know
Of everyone I see
On the street
And on TV, yeah''

Listening to 'The Almost' alot lately, and Aaron Gillespie is amazing. He is only 24, blind in one eye, colour blind in the other, drummer/vocalist for Underoath, and plays every instrument for his band The Almost. He plays all the instruments on the album, but has a band when they play live.
He will go on to become one of the all time greats in music.

The Wombats - Let's Dance To Joy Division.

A simply brilliant song, really looking foward to The Wombats' debut album when it comes out. :)
Love that song! Finally managed to download it after about a month attempting to get it :\

It's brilliant, I love it.

I was the same as Iain, I had to gamble on one that didn't have the full name on limewire because I was so desperate to get my hands on it.

Electro stuff really, I have to say the music is nowhere near as good when it's not played in a club full of people, but it's still something at times I want to listen to.

The Fray are a load of bum. Partly due to the song me and and my ex claimed as "ours" was How To Save A Life. Maybe if we listened to the lyrics and didnt have that as our song we might be together now haha.

Anywho. Newton Faulker. Best album I've heard in a while.
