Personally I think the hunter is a great class to play. Hunters are capable of taking on most of the mobs in the game, just remember to keep enough distance. I think the uniqueness of the hunter lies in the fact that when you are in a fellowship (group) you have a skill to make the whole group travel faster for one. I can list quite a few skills and traits more, but I'll leave that up to you to discover. :D
A hunter is indeed capable of doing great damage to a mob. The downside of this is that a hunter has one of the lowest morale (health) in this game. Which means that if you get two strong melee mobs on you, you're basically screwed. Hunters are not really for melee, but we can keep using our ranched attacks in melee too, so we still deal a lot of damage. Also, be aware that when you're grouped with a guardian for instance, you might pull the aggro of the mob of the guardian and it comes after you. Don't be surprised when it happens, that's the kind of damage dealing a hunter is capable of.

Bear in mind that we can't wear Heavy Armour, unlike other classes, even at level 20 we don't get the ability to...
So couple the defense (I have around 150 less than a Champion at same level as me) with the low moral (again, around 200+ less than a Champion at the same level, and I have high Vitality for my level) and we die quite a bit unless we're careful.
Then, always keep a safe distance, and don't forget to carry some potions/cookings. The Hunter can also uses traps, and even slow down his ennemies on higher level.
You may also be interested to know we can Deul-wield, inflict at least one DoT, Fear (Animals), Trap Mobs, Track Beasts, Have a couple of snares (10% + 40% (only with correct stance i believe)) aswell as some close range and long distance instants, A run speed increase (only 15% and it cancels when you enter combat), and various stances to increase things like accuracy & damage.
Thats all that i have at level 16, although that is most of a hunters skills. They are a great class to play although i am dying a lot more than other classes, because of low health and fairly weak armour. As fas as i know we are the only ranged DPS which will make us more needed in raids as there is no alternative (correct me if im wrong).
Yes only ranged, but there is a debate about who has the highest DPS, Champions or Hunters. My point of view is that a Hunter will be really more usefull for single powerfull ennemies.

I do that, doesn't mean it isn't harder to survive than classes with Heavy Armour though.
It is.

Hunters are great.
In higher lvls you have no problems solo-kill orange mobs if you set your strategy right.
Usually my strategy is :
1. set up trap behind me and mob in fornt of me.
2. boost focus.
3. fire "dual-arrows"
4. fire "penetration shot"
5 fire "quick shot"
6. fire Penetration shot
7. move behind trap to snare mob.
8. run "backwards" so you dont auto fire on mob with a normal shot.
9. fire "dual arrow"
ALL down :)
You still have problems with red mobs, but thats the same for all clases, because red mobs makes your miss chance increse a lot, and when you finally hit it you only deal minor damage to the mob :)

8. run "backwards" so you dont auto fire on mob with a normal shot.
Another solution for this, press escape to clear the target. You won't auto-fire but keep your bow in hand. :)
I use the following tactic (sp) for two mobs:
1. Set trap in front of me
2. Target mob that is furthest away
3. Use the swift bow attack on the selected mob
4. Both mobs run to you, hit targeted mob with barbed arrow
5. Second mob gets traped, hit first mob with penetrating shot
6. Leave the second mob trapped while you finish off the targeted one
7. Once the targeted mob is dead, take some time to heal some
8. Target second mob and repeat steps 3 - 5 (only shots ;))
9. The second mob requires you to use some melee attacks
The above usually works for me with mobs like two levels below me and non-elite ones.

During beta I could defeat 1 creature 4 levels higher than me, but after nerfing every attribute for the official release I found out that it's harder.
Still, it is doable, but you must also take into consideration the repair costs. Fighting against higher level opponents will result in some damage for your equipments. Eventually it all comes down to repair costs in relevance to the quest reward plus trophies.
Trial and error, and anyone can get the hang of this.

Defeating creatures 4 levels above your own level was rather easy in beta, but that's what it was a beta for. ;)
Like you said, it is still possible, but much harder. And the repair costs now are incredably high. That's why most players only repair when some of their armor turns yellow. Personally, I still take on higher level mobs for the loot and the XP. If I sell the loot, I usually have enough to do repairs and make some profit of it.
