In response to comments in game from those who think that Hobbits should not be hunters, I put a couple of quotes together:

"The Shire folk survived, though war swept over them and most of them fled into hiding. To the help of the king they sent some archers who never returned; and others went also to the battle in which Angmar was overthrown." LotR Appendix A (Third Age c.1975)

"Though slow to quarrel, and for sport killing nothing that lived, they were doughty at bay, and at need could still handle arms. They shot well with the bow, for they were keen eyed and sure at the mark. Not only with bows and arrows. If any Hobbit stooped for a stone, it was well to get quickly under cover, as all trespassing beasts knew very well." LotR Prologue, Concerning Hobbits.

"A score or more broke out and charged the wagons. Six were shot, but the remainder burst out, ... Two more fell as they ran. Merry blew a loud horn-call, and there were answering calls from a distance.
'They won't get far,' said Pippin. 'All that country is alive with our hunters now.' "

"...suddenly Wormtongue rose up, drawing a hidden knife, and then with a snarl like a dog he sprang on Saruman's back, jerked his head back, cut his throat, and with a yell ran off down the lane. Before Frodo could recover or speak a word, three hobbit-bows twanged and Wormtongue fell dead" (both passages) LotR, The Scouring of the Shire

The next time someone tells you that Hobbits shouldn't be Hunters, just point them at the book and suggest they maybe read it? :D

Well quoted and well said!

I know it seems funny sometimes that even the possibility of being hobbits exists, but I read LOTR trilogy and The Silmarillion (I think that's how it is spelled) and Hobbits are not useless.

It's the Shire Hobbits that tend to keep to themselves and out of the affairs of others. And though Tolkien didn't talk about them as much, there are many Hobbits that live outside the confines of the Shire, who live among and surely must get involved in the world of Men.

And just think, Hobbits eat a lot, and we all know they aren't vegitarians. They have to get the meat somehow.

The above quoted passages are awesome in the justification of playing as a Hobbit and i hope the forum admins sticky this post.

Just because Hobbits are short doesn't make them useless. I learned to shoot a bow when I was 6 or 7 years old, and barely tall enough to reach the kitchen sink.

Yeah nice quotes, it's sad that how everyone generalizes and simplifies hobbits. Nice arguement, heheh.

But then, there's my question about Dwarf Hunters...

So, furry animals are immortal to axes? Why is everyone taking the hunter as simply someone who hunts. I don't remember any dwarf using a bow, or a crossbow. Please correct me if I am wrong, but dwarves prefer close-combat isn't it right?

Fast moving animals v throwing axes? O.o

Seriously though you think that dwarves had no ranged defenses when under siege? Bows is questionable but for sure crosssbows.
