I wouldn't think so, i tried hunter and to me, they seem pathetically weak.

Your character take 2-3 seconds to shoot an arrow, before you can shoot another, the enemy is at melee range, so i think its just best to be a Melee Class, cause thats where its fought out the most.

I saw Legolas moving AND shooting AND hitting his targets, so suggest the Hunters do that too and he was even shooting arrows every second...hell, most of the times, he didn't even need to aim and he got neck shots and headshots.

I just thought it would be like the movies, but it isn't. oh well.

Back to Melee for me, hmmm, Guardian, Captain, Burglar or Champion.....tough choice.

Nope - it's like the book, which the movie isn't :D

Hunter is a good class once you understand how to play it. My hunter is my favourite character (solo/duo), closely followed by my Minstrel (for groups).

I don't see as many other hunters now I'm around L20 - possibly a portion of the original hunter players cannot adjust to ranged combat?

You have to slot the right traits for your playstyle, mine are mainly for power and morale regeneration so I can hunt faster.

At L16 I've found that I've never really lowered my power low enough to warrant concern...

As for the Hunter class, once you get one or two things down it becomes a bit easier. You really need to be aware of what you're attacking and how many you're attacking. If you think it's going to be two of equalish level, set a trap, barbed arrow the furthest away. Because he has slowed the one closer 90% of the time gets trapped, allowing you to take out the slow one. You should use you're double arrow one's for this. Then you have to decide if it's worth using your accumulated focus on finishing him, or if you'd be better off using a standard attack and use the focus on the new guy.

if u add a quick shot while in stance strength u actually get 40% off the movement speed which will pretty much garuntee that mob dont reach the trap b4 the other

Im actually finding the hunter to be quite boring and I hope it has to do more with that then the game itself being boring..

But right now, Im finding it hard to motivate myself to log in :(

I feel the same mate, its that first hard slog, where you pass the training quests and you want to get stuck into the game and all it has to offer . . . dont do what im thinking of doing and creating a champion say, stick with the hunter . . . you'll not regret it

I'm level 20 on my hunter now... Ever since my life of MMORPGS i've always found it a pain and found it very boring to play ranged class... i've always played as melee fighters... Pikesman / Swordsman or TKM in SWG, Warrior or Rogue in WOW, and Warrior (?) in Guild Wars....

On LOTR i started as a champion and decided it was a time for a change... so i rolled an Elf Hunter...

I've adapted and can jump between the two class's and do both...

Admittedly on the hunter i can sometimes manage to kill a mob before it gets to me, giving the right stance and right combo or attacks... but when it gets close... Duel Handed at level20 sure does help!

With hunter its all about killing them before they get to you... Traps, Tracking.. Speed...

All about getting the jump on your opponent :P

I usually play warrior or paladins in MMOs so i thought in this one id be a Hunter. I haven't see too many other hunters though, usually champions and defenders, but on other class forums theres typically a thread saying "is everyone <insert that class>"

I play a hunter mainly and he's now just reached lvl23. I find they're fantastic for going out to farm for wood/leather and money. Aparrently they have the greatest DPS to a single target in the game, I always try to pick single targets off and then use traps when it comes to 2 or 3 targets. Rain of arrows then works well when it comes to melee along with dual-weilding.

The one thing I don't like is that you can't fire your bow when moving, but maybe it would unbalance the game if you could.

i have a 75 ranger in eq who does double melee dps than bow at my evolution, i also play ninja/ranger/warrior in ffxi with ranged weps. hunter was obvious choice for me as were my crafts. in trollshaws i could solo kill a 38 ish orange con mob at 34-5 and sometimes without it touching me, this is using a trap. sometimes in prior levels i could do it without a trap but the bows dont progress

It can be a little like the movies but remember Legolas would be Level, what, 50? Proficiency with a bow does improve and there are ways (quest rewards etc.) of getting decent bows too - the best of course to make your own :-)!
In the beginning, just try locating better. Leggy didnt just blindly run into the fray either dudes. For instance, in the marshlands south of Combe there's a ruin infested with spiders. There are lots of places to get up on the walls though to pick them off one by one. Or when there's a group of enemies, scout around and draw away the outmost ones without alarming the others (kinda like Mikado). Whatever you do, never go for the leader of the bunch first, everybody will jump to his defense. Be quick, think about who and how to attack and chose your own ground, and you'll take on anything. The hunter is the most intelligent class out there I think (and I'm sure to get a ****storm on that one :-).
And about pure prowess: I'm only a level 11 but where I saw an equal-levelled Champ almost getting killed by 2 bears i picked of 5 without breaking a sweat or any of 'em touching me. How else could it be, with -75/-85 per shot with the brutes? I think that's pretty darn good, combined it with the barbed-arrow+scourging blow combo (adds 30-something to your melee strike) and whatever it is, its dead.

Hunters are pretty easy to play, and if you take a little bit of time to think about the class they are great fun. No, you generally can't take on more than 2 mobs of equal to or greater level than you, but in most cases you don't need to. You can deal out great damage, and you can dispatch enemies more quickly than other classes. I really love my hunter - and for that reason I haven't managed to level any of my alts higher than 6 ;).

The only problem is the fact that there are quite a few hunters out there, but I've never found it to be TOO much of a problem.

I havent played a game yet where they let the ranged class move and fire at the same time, just be glad you can fire still even if they in melee range.
Yes I know blackarrow can aparently move and fire, though he isnt a player class, and im not sure they should let him do it anyway.

I do tend to find there are tons of hunters about, which is bad in that it makes me less unique.
I would tend to be a Ranger, or in this case hunter even if it is the unpopular choice like in AC2, or in FFXI after they made some ranged damage changes.

The biggest problem with there being so many, is they made the class just so damn cool.
Run speed buff, traveling skills, campfires, awsome DPS, no extortionate arrow costs.

I am glad there is no freeps v freeps PvP or I could see the nerfbat comming out, but as we all on the same side of good, theres no need right ;)

I started my first character as hunter, still is my only character, but haven't played more than hour or so. Hunter is in close combat about 70% of time used. I have a few times defeated enmies before they reach my hunter, but that's rare situation.

My first impression was, Hunters arrows does too little damages, because ability be range fighter requires to You to have range, now You end to be close combat anyway. So I was very close to delete the hunter and start fighter type of character. This has notting to do with been strong or weak, but range hunter in close combat isn't range hunter.

Basicly this same problem is in many other games too. NPC enemies allways run to You so fast than You can't really have range combat. It's basic problem in most of the games where could be range fighting. In EQ2 this is the same, range fighting is allways in close combat, enemies almost jump to next to You from first attack.

City of Heroes has done range combat better, it actually works there. But You can pretty much 2-3 shoot the enemies dead in there.

Well, perhaps you only tried the hunter for the first few lvls, of course it's weak! my hunter is lvl 21, and I can take on several lvl 23 enemies. You say you only get to shoot one arrow before the animal is at melee range. Again, you haven't really looked into it. Most of the mobs in my lvl don't even get to hit me once, I hit them 3-4 times with special arrows who takes time shooting, and if they get to me I'm usually charged up for Penetrating Shot which pretty much kills them off.
Secondly,
how could you POSSIBLY think that it was going to be like in the movies? Perhaps Legolas can do neckshots without aiming, but that's just for the sheer entertainment. Besides, he is prince of Mirkwood, not just a nobody. and how would it even work in a MMORPG if every hunter, even the ones in lvl 1, jumped around doing acrobatic somersaults onto horses and killing hundreds of orcs, then there wouldn't really be any challenge in it, would there ? If it had to be like in the movies, then our characters could never change equipment and we'd probably have to talk and cry more than we'd have to fight.
