View Full Version : One man and his dog...
...or is it One elf and his cat?
A man (well, elf) of the the beast lore am I, and having had it up to the hilt with a nameless french mmorpg companys "couldn't care less about the customer" attitude , I have moved on, and in flight found myself here at the gateway to middle earth.
I shall indeed be taking up the graceful bow against the mighty armies of Sauron. But where shall my graceful feline companion feature along this epic journey before me, through the most darkest and dangerous of places within this universe?!?
Please please please please please promise me that this is under consideration and will possibly be implemented at sometime in the future!
I R Huntaaar, I want pet! (pretty please?)

yea i think a hunter need a pet companion and also a variaty of pets so that not everyone is walking around with the same pets :). certain pets could be put in hard to reach places, and be a kind of prize to the player, but then again i dont know how the current classes will work with pets

Personally I hope they do not introduce Hunter pets into LotRO, other than the fact it does not fit the Lore associated with Middle Earth it will also introduce Balance / Scaling issues. Currently Hunters in LotRO have the highest single target DPS in the game, the addition of pets will cause Hunters to be overpowered and so will lead to Hunters being rebalanced / nerfed.
WoW has been out for several years and in that game Hunters have had pets since day 1 and yet there are still issues surrounding pet scaling and being able to use pets in raid encounters, the addition of pets at this late stage will, IMHO, cause more problems than it is worth.
If you feel incomplete without a Pet why not try playing a Loremaster?

I dont think so =p
Indeeed....I've just come from thattaway!
It's not necessarily about pet damage, more about crowd control, and not having to run around middle earth looking for some guardian to hold aggro while you dish out the pain :P

Bah, just adopt a Hobbit, they are small, hairy, cute and always hungry...so not much different from a WoW Hunter's pet ;-)

You'll want to use traps then, which pin the first mob to cross them. So put it in front of your targets that are likely to come in pairs, and shoot at the far one.

agreed, you have you trap skill, you have bear traps and you have multitraps..all on different cooldowns, either put them in a line to catch 1 mob again and again or spread them out so you can catch at least 4, crowd control is easy!

Only a poorly played hunter 'needs' a Guardian while they dish out the pain..
Traps, low cuts, strength stance and quickshot, etc., are all you need. Most things are dead by the time they get close enough for me to hit them and with Dual Wield I don't worry about them surviving long enough for me to finish them off :)

a Non combatant Companion would be great. Cat, Rat, Dog, Slug hehe
I don't want a combat one Hunters don't need one. But I can live without any type of pet. :)
and about the Hobbit comment while funny ..... what if you are a Hobbit!!! <Taps her hairy foot on the floor while waiting for a Sensible answer>

I don't care much for an extra companion during my quests in the form of a controllable pet. I prefer dishing out the superdamage to a single target.
We have our crowd control in the form of a trap you can place and it can snare 1 target. We just have to be more careful here than in "that other mmo"
What I do miss is the "cosmetic" pet for all classes/races. I wow I used to run around with my Siamese kitty at all times. I just loved it. :) (as a horde)

hunters should get one pet, a dog. but this pet won't be a tank, yet a small dmg dealer with other bonuses........

- Hunters don't need more damage. They're already in the top positions to deliver that.
- They also don't need more crowd control as they have several options for doing this.
- Do they need something to keep the enemy away from them because they can't use their bows at close range? No.
Yes I play a Hunter. Did so several years in DAoC and WoW. I even don't see one single reason, why a pet should be added to the Hunter class here.
Just say NO to Hunterpets - or pack your bags to find your luck somewhere else.

I play a hunter and absolutely do not want a pet. There is nothing in LotR lore about hunters having pets. If you want to play a hunter with a pet then this isn't the game for you. It's not DAOC, it's not WoW, it's Lord of the Rings :p

A Pet?? Why would I ever want something tagging along that'd eat all the food?
Seriously though... no need for anything to aid Hunters as things are. We're pretty much the top class for damage with decent CC. (but if that crate stays in my bag much longer I'm gonna have to give it a name... )

I suggested dogs as Hunter pets in the suggestions forum. This was after I saw the models of the deerhound / wolfhound lookalike dogs in one of the Shire quests. I own such a dog in real life, and was pleased to see how well they were modelled.
Ted the Longdog. A deerhound x greyhound.

I wouldn't want it to deal damage, but to go out with a dog hunting (those modelled are classic solo hunting type dogs) would be great. Maybe it could supplement the beast tracking skills, or give a slightly advanced warning of beasts. Perhaps it could work like a trap, holding the beast at bay for a short while. This would only augment / replicate abilities the hunters have at the moment, but add such a lot for those of us who solo the game. (I used to love role playing with my Kaadu mount in Star Wars: Galaxies)
To reiterate, dogs for hunters wouldn't add anything, just modify how our current abilities are deployed.

Definitely NO to pets for Hunters.
And another NO for pets as cosmetics. What is this? A pet beauty contest?

Loving things with hunter as they are. Seems more of a challenge with an active playstyle, rather than the easy mode hunters I've experienced before.

I'll add my two cents: no Hunter pets. It's too much of a cliche, it doesn't fit the lore, and the Hunter is already perfectly well balanced class without it. Let the Loremasters keep them, that perfectly makes sense in the game and in the lore.
I don't want a "battle pet". But I want a small companion to follow you around and bite you in the trouser leg in the most unfitting of moments. As one German actor put it: "One might be able to live without a dog, but it's not worth to try".

change game, thats WoW and its ruined the archery type classes. in everquest I, post WoW all the newbie rangers want pets, frankly they are annoying and its usually a sign of time played when a ranger posts wanting one. they have one in ffxi now but frankly its gimp. i dont want a pet, let lms and captains have em. i can snare, trap and nuke something to death

lol what of the "most unfitting" moment is when you get attacked by a load of Orcs :D your pet bites you on the trouser leg and you cant move... "WELL DONE PET! in getting me killed" you will say in the Halls of Mandos :D
P.S
Do you lose anything when you die??? and is it like WoW were you have to find your corpse? (not that i like that, but its better then loosing all your stuff like in Runescape((those who have played Runescape will know how annoying it is to lose like all the best stuff in the game, or the best stuff you've got)) ...... grrr i hate Runescape!)
P.P.S
(for the post above)
ooooooo nukes is that a new spell that an alien from the future gave your chary :D
Im a hunter. I tried hunter in wow and didnt like all the micro management you had to do with pets, plus they died so quickly anyway. Hunters in lotr should not have pets in my opinion as Im a big fan of lore in these types of games.
HeHe I see my pet discussion is still banging on. TBH, I'm still enjoying playing my hunter and managing perfectly well without my lickle kitty.
Being primarily a soloist, the pet was more of a companion than anything else, never felt alone in WoW with my pet tigger 'Zooks'.
I do see how a lot of the posts refer to the lore of LOTR and I have to smile when people jump on this in defence of their opinions. I've never read any of the books nor seen the films but have just started with The Hobbit and intend to follow that with the LOTR books and then prolly the films. I'm looking forward to the part where a hunter (are hunters even referred to) checks out the ground and then magically warps himself and his friends to Rivendell, Bree, Thorin's Gate or Esteldin :D

Classes as such aren't in the lore at all. There are fairly good archetypes for some of the classes (Gandalf - loremaster, Aragorn - captain) but there isn't a good archetype for the Hunter class
Legolas is a superb archer but so is virtually every adult elf. It seems more derived from the medieval English tradition that required every adult male to practice with a longbow than a certain subset of heroic adventurer
What I'm saying is I don't recall Tolkien mentioning Hunters at all, and if he did I'm sure it was in the context of people who go out and shoot rabbits for dinner rather than heroic archer-adventurers
So I think the Hunter class should be judged on its gameplay merits as the stated Nuker class. Seems to be working as intended, the chances of the devs deciding to nerf Hunter damage just to make this game more like WoW are surely approximately nil. Fwiw most WoW Hunters, at least the ones that raid, would give up the pet in a flash in return for becoming the top dps class in the game
